Been awhile since I've made a thread about the RA era but I've dug out some Raw shows circa 05 from the collection and man this guy was a fantastic heel.Yeah it was your typical anti American gimmick but he nailed it. When his theme hit the amount of heat was off the charts.Def this eras Iron Sheik
Just imagine he did get to win Big Gold from Batista at SSlam that year in DC of all places. Made man right there. But as we all know real life bombings That summer ended all that. But a big what if for sure with this character.

I feel that looking back the era of the summer of 2005, we can see how people were changing as becoming all about "cancel culture" in a sense.
In the 80s, fans wouldn't freak out of someone like the Iron Sheik won the WWF Title, they would just boo him constantly and hate him because of the horrible things he said and hope an American hero like Hulk Hogan would come along and end that title reign and shut up the Iron Sheik. And all that did happen.
However, in 2005, wrestling fans couldn't handle Muhammad Hassan doing the same exact thing. Instead, he has to go away and get fired from the WWE.
Now a days, something of that nature wouldn't even be thought of. To be fair, I am shocked that the whole Rusev thing worked out so well and fans didn't want that to be cancelled too.

I don't think the fans had anything to do with Hassan getting released. It was the boneheaded decision Vince had to make him an actual terrorist a week after the London bombings.

Dude had nuclear heat as is.He didnt need masked henchman. But just another creative decision to blow up in Vince's face...

I don't remember much about him, I wasn't watching much at this time, just popping in occasionally. But I do remember Hogan getting a huge pop when he confronted Hassan and his lacky/manager.

Yep at Mania that year. Just watched a Raw late into the run where he challenged Cena for that ugly spinner belt. I remember at the time rooting for em to win and hoping in the process they change the design back lol

Yeah, in my honest opinion there is a big difference between the egregious cancel culture of today and absolute poor taste at the wrong time and WWE definitely went too far with this one.
The Hassan character was very edgy, but there was nothing too offensive during the early part of his run. However, once they ran that storyline with Daivari depicting himself as a martyr it just crossed a line that they didn't even have to approach.
Such a waste too as Hassan didn't need that kind of heat. He was already super over as a heel which was very impressive considering the whole "evil foreigner" gimmick had been done to death. WWE has nobody to blame, but themselves.

He played the character fine but I was over the anti American gimmick even then.

If they put the belt on em and he eventually loses to knowing Vince the all American babyface,Do they keep em strong afterward or does he fall down the ladder and is pretty much done One thing they couldve done in 06 is debut Khali as his new heavy

Another thing that's infuriating about the terrorist thing is that Smackdown was taped! They could have just not chosen to air it but they did anyways.

I think it was too late to by that point since the incident happened the morning of the day the episode aired. The show probably would have sent off to air.

I remember thinking he was an interesting character. Someone definable in a pretty bland era (the only other interesting character for me at the time was Carlito Caribbean Cool). Was pretty excited that WWF was starting to focus on character development again. But they went too far with the character so was doomed to fail.
I found him decent on the mic but was pretty basic in the ring.

I actually wish we had more on the nose characters in wrestling
a Donald Trump loving wrestler could’ve really been divisive, but may instigate too much fan on fan violence 😬

I gonna be honest, wrestling is an escape for me. I don’t know how interested I am in real world stuff inside of wrestling. Too divisive.
