I was going back and watching all the Superstars episodes from 1992 and it amazed me how "off script" the build up to SummerSlam 1992 was post-WM8. Judging by TV at the time, you would have easily assumed the card for SummerSlam 1992 would have looked something like this:
Savage vs Flair for the title Warrior vs Papa Shango Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels for the IC title Undertaker vs Berserker Tatanka vs Rick Martel Bulldog vs Repo Man Money Inc vs Natural Disasters LOD vs Beverly Bros High Energy vs Nasty Boys Mountie vs Slaughter
Instead, at the time of the first "SummerSlam Report," we got a bunch of matches that were just seemingly thrown together. Even the Macho/Warrior match was out of nowhere (though it was built up decently well once it was announced.)
I know the story of how the Bret/Bulldog match came to be, but what are your thoughts on the rest of the card? Were most these programs mentioned above strictly house show attractions? Was the house show business model of hyping house show programs on TV still viable at the time? It just seemed strange to me.

Yeah Warrior/Mach literally came outta nowhere as one week they were still on the Shango feud and then bam next week they announce the title match
They also at one point advertised a Kerry Von Erich match which was really outta left field as he was pretty much done by the Summer with him not doing nothing of note in forever.Felt random as hell
Edit-here's his promo...

At that time I took a little break from wrestling. I was going from 8th grade to freshman year and I was trying to be too cool for wrestling. The phase didn’t last long but when I came back to wrestling I got into wcw.

Wow, I'd never heard of a Shango/Tornado match being officially advertised for the event. I think Shango did face Tito Santana in a dark match, as well as the advertised Tatanka vs Berserker match.

Yep plus the 6 man tag Duggan/Whackers vs Mountie/Nasties. All aired on PTW in the Fall On the topic of the Berzerker/Tatanka match, They actually filmed footage of Berzerker training with Fuji. I think it was for the UK audience only as I dont recall it being shown here in the US.It was on YT years back but is gone now.

I remember thinking too that SummerSlam was gonna have...
Savage vs. Flair for the WWF Title Warrior vs. Shango Undertaker vs. Sid Slaughter vs. Mountie Bret vs. HBK for the IC Title Money Inc. vs. Natural Disasters for the Tag Titles LOD vs. Beverly Bros. Boss Man vs. Nailz
And then everything got changed around. Those house show matches meant nothing apparently! Ha ha

I just learned yesterday that there was a weekend where Macho Man couldn’t make his matches against Jake and they got Hogan to replace him. So the same event where Mountie beat Bret for the IC title. The main event was Hulk Hogan against 1992 heel Jake.
