This came up as a question on Cornettes drive Thru this week( Jim tears it to shreds) but essentially its Ray saying Heenan, AA & Tully politicked their way to the tag titles in 1989 and that the Rougeau brothers had been promised the next run. Ray said it on a recent radio interview in Quebec.
Now if it had been Jacques saying this? Like most I would dismiss it offhand because Ray has the much better rep for being just a straight up no nonsense type than Jacques. But I did find it interesting because for me the RBs were a comedy heel act.....I couldn't see Vince choosing them to be the ones to end Demolitions 14 month reign. The Bushwhackers beat them at WM5....
Cornette rags on it because he says Bobby wasn't a politician but also says he NEVER heard Vince promise anyone a title run( Bad News Brown situation was mentioned) & even though he wasnt working there at the time just didnt see this happening then either because of the landscape of the tag team scene.
thoughts on this one?

Yeah I dont buy it
They pushed Arn/Tully strong outta the gate to which you knew they were in line for the belts at some point. No better team to end Demos reign.

The Rougeaus ending Demolition's 14-month reign? Get out of town! That was never going to happen - NEVER. The Rougeaus were glorified jobbers at that point in time.

In the context of Rays story?
Id be interested to know WHEN Vince would have told them this...as Brain says? when Arn & Tully were brought in in Oct(?) 88 they were presented as serious heels and a threat. By 89 they were second only to the Twin Towers on the heel team ranks and the towers were only no1 because they were feuding with the Mega Powers. Even thats disputable....POP were above the RBs as well.

I feel that one of two things is the case with this...
1. The Rougeaus were really told by Vince McMahon that they were gonna be Tag Champions because I have heard other wrestlers in shoots say they were told they would be said champion and it never happened. So I do believe Vince told these things to his wrestlers at times to keep them from jumping elsewhere.
Or...
2. The Rougeaus lost to the Bushwhackers at Wrestlemania V. No way would they be put into winning the Tag Titles from Demolition in the summer of 1989.
I do know the Rougeaus won the WWF Tag Titles in 1987 from the Hart Foundation in Montreal but they didn't acknowledge it. And the Foundation remained champions.
I do know that if Demolition weren't around in 1988, and the newly heel team of the Rougeaus could have been the ones to defeat Strike Force for the titles, but with Demolition there, no way was that gonna happen.
I still stand by the first statement, that Vince did tell them that to keep them around. Because I do remember the Rougeaus last WWF appearance was the Royal Rumble 1990 when once again, they lost to the Bushwhackers.

It could be a case of a wrestler confusing the years. I wouldn't be surprised if Vince said to the Rougeau Brothers at one point that they were going to be champions (or maybe he said it more like they had a great chance at becoming champions). But that was probably when he brought them into the company, or around the time they "won" the belts from the Hart Foundation in Montreal in 1987. Maybe Raymond thinks that they were supposed to be the next champions after Demolition had their run, but as always, plans change. By 1989, the Rougeau Brothers were on the downside of their run, and Vince had two new teams to build towards (Powers of Pain and Brain Busters). Vince tried to make the Powers of Pain, but that didn't work, so the next likely team would have been the Brain Busters. It would be interesting to hear Arn or Tully's comments on this.

Even if it’s true, look at the talent involved. Who would take the Rougeaus over Arn and Tully?
