May 17, 1993.
It was on this date that Razor Ramon was upset by a relative unknown who went by the moniker "The Kid." This remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of Monday Night Raw especially from its early days. Squash matches were the norm back then, but it was truly shocking to see a verified jobber beat someone with a credible name.
Did anyone here watch this live? What was your reaction?
This was the launching pad for Sean Waltman and interestingly enough I think it also helped propel Razor Ramon who would soon after turn face and become a megastar in the WWF. When people bring up the greatest upsets in pro wrestling history, I think this one is the benchmark.

I remember this episode of Raw.....I knew Waltman as The Lightning Kid from GWF. I used to see him all the time in the Apter mags. Ironically it didnt blow me away because I was more familiar with him than The Diamond Studd...LOL.

Thought it was well done. To the big pop, Bobby's reaction on commentary and Razor selling his defeat
Waltman was perfect for the underdog role thats for sure

Such an awesome moment, but on this show Marty Jannetty returned and beat HBK for the Intercontinental title and it always gets over shadowed by the Kid and Razor.

It's crazy to look back at that era and think of Sean Waltman as an "underdog" when his wrestling size then is like the normal wrestling size now that you see on TV.
Actually, he may have been bigger than the size of the guys we see on TV now.

This episode really layed down a marker for Raw & that Vince wanted it to be different.
Jobber beats a big heel & an IC title switch. Pity it was impossible to live up to.

What was the reason for this? Was Razor getting face chants like Demolition and they wanted to eventually turn him or did they bring in Kid to get a good position but needed to introduced him some way?

I absolutely loved this angle. When I first started watching wrestling it took me a while to catch on that jobbers never win. Then bang, the Kid pulls it out the bag.
I may be imagining this but was there another job guy that scored a fluke win around about this time? It might even have been a draw with a named wrestler. I’m aware of the Barry Horowitz angle with Chris Candido but I’m convinced there was another.

PJ walker aka the future Aldo Montoya/Justin Credible got a win over IRS That September thanks to a Razor distraction

His upset didn't propel him to superstardom in the WWF like it did with Sean Waltman, but he was still able to carve out a nice career for himself with his run as Justin Credible in ECW a few years later. I always wondered if people thought the Razor project was done after this happened? He came into the WWF hot and was immediately paired in the main event scene with Flair then a few months later he finds himself with a World title match against Bret at the Royal Rumble. Things cooled off after that though as he was booked on a meaningless match at WrestleMania IX then this moment happened where he got beat on live TV by a compete nobody. Again, this match ended up making Razor as much as it made Sean Waltman.

Official seeds planted here for his babyface turn.I liked how they built up to it with the announcers saying he hasnt recovered from the loss with the final straw being Money Inc ripping on em Will say though I really enjoyed em as a heel in the beginning. I do wish we got some more mileage outta that

He had a lengthy and very successful babyface run that included multiple Intercontinental title reigns. He had done all he could in that role though. Also, the WWF was starved for legitimate main event heels at that time which was a void that Razor could have easily filled as he was over no matter if he was getting cheered or booed.

I enjoyed his match with Bret at Rumble 93 so I wouldve been all for em revisiting it in 95/6

I enjoyed his match with Bret at Rumble 93 so I wouldve been all for em revisiting it in 95/6 Their rematch at King of the Ring 1993 was also really good, but that one gets overshadowed by the more notable Bret/Perfect rematch that stole the show. And to think, Razor was still pretty green at the time so just imagine what a feud versus Bret would have looked like in 1995/1996 when he had fully established himself and that persona.
