We all know "Stone Cold" won the Royal Rumble in 1997 after he'd already been eliminated and sneaked back in and took out Undertaker, Vader and Bret.
The talk at Wrestlemania was supposed to be Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWF Title.
At the next In Your House we get the "Final Four" battle royal with Vader, Undertaker, Austin and Bret. Only this time it's now for the WWF Title, because HBK vacated it due to the knee injury.
So we all know what happens next with Bret winning it, then losing it the following night, setting up for Bret vs. Austin, and Taker vs. Sid at WM 13.
My question is then, let's say HBK didn't vacate the WWF Title. Bret wins the Final Four and at Wrestlemania it's Bret vs. Shawn for the WWF Title.
Does Undertaker vs. Sid still take place??
Where does Steve Austin fit in?? Is he even on the event?? I remember Steve saying that he was home nursing an injury when he was watching Raw and heard that at Wrestlemania 13 Bret vs. Austin in a submission match was happening.
So maybe Steve wasn't even gonna be booked on the PPV that year??
Anyone have any ideas or heard any stories as to what was gonna go down at that Wrestlemania 13 event??

Interesting to think about. It's amazing that HBK "losing his smile", the Curtain Call, and the Montreal Screwjob, all changed history, but for the better. HBK "losing his smile" gave us the greatest match in WrestleMania history (IMO), and led to Bret turning heel. The Curtain Call removed HHH from winning the King of the Ring Tournament in 1996, which allowed Austin to get the win and it birthed Austin 3:16. Bret refusing to lose to HBK, plus the whole screwjob incident, gave rise to the Mr. McMahon character, which definitely helped the WWF take back control from WCW in the ratings war. People not doing what they were supposed to do ended up being better in the long run than what was planned. I guess the lesson to be learned here is, it's better to wing it than script it.
As for what would have happened if Bret faced HBK at WM13 instead, I think we do still get Taker vs. Sid in a #1 contenders match of some sort, it seems like these guys were building a feud prior to HBK losing his smile. We already got Taker/Vader, so Sid seemed like the most likely opponent next. Another option could have been Taker & Sid vs. Vader & Foley. For Austin, I do remember them building something between Austin, Bulldog & Owen. Owen was siding with Austin in his feud against Bret, but Davey seemed to be backing Bret. So they were teasing a split between Owen & Davey with Austin in the middle of it. I wonder if they were going to put Austin against Bulldog at WM13 and Owen gets involved somehow. I can also see Austin and Bret feuding for the belt after WM13.

Austin vs. Owen gets moved up a couple of months? Owen takes the IC title from Helmsley instead of Rock in February.
Mankind was seemingly floundering in early 97, maybe we get Austin/Dude vs. Bulldog/Owen earlier for the tag titles?
Hard to imagine Austin feuding with anyone other than someone from the Hart Foundation at that time.

We really was blessed to get Austin/Bret Yep, definitely the best feud in the WWF at the time, and their match was perfect. It really was an epic one... maybe the best ever! Cos of that match alone I wouldn’t call WM13 the worst... I liked Taker/Sid & even Owen/Bulldog vs Foley/Vader.

Though on paper, it sounded nice, none of the matches really did anything. Sid/Taker was okay, but nothing to right home about. Same with the tag team match. Really, other than Bret/Austin, only the street fight was good - IMO.

I have heard the rumor was for Austin to work with Taker at WM13. Maybe we then get Sid vs Vader or Mankind?

I couldn’t tell which one would be the worst.
