It has been a while since I have seen any threads on who played each Doink the Clown in Mattel’s offering so far. For clarification purposes, who played each representation of the character in figure form?
-Elite 34 -Flashback Series (Heartbreak Hotel baf/Walmart exclusive) -Retro (Mattel’s Hasbro version) -Ultimate Edition

Thought they were all Matt Borne eras. I’d be shocked if they had Lombardi, Keirn or Apollo under contract at any point.

They’re all Matt Borne’s face
Even the attires he never wore.
He’s the only Doink signed to a contract

Borne might have some degree of legal ownership over the Doink character that Apollo and the others don’t have. The flashback Doink they released is 1000% an attire only Ray Apollo wore but it’s Matt’s face sculpt. Ray isn’t signed as far as we know.

I'd question this; just based on the recent "Dark Side Of The Ring" about Doink ..... unless something changed recently; In the documentary they indicated that WWE sent Borne a "Cease & Desist" on using the character after he left WWE.... Borne countered back that he wasn't receiving any of his promised residuals. They said that WWE then began paying him the residuals but he needed to stop using the character/trademark. WWE owns the character, they created it. I'm pretty sure WWE owns the likeness and can probably license it however they please.

If that is the case, I wish they would have made a different scan to more resemble Ray Apollo for the Elite Flashback that was part of the Heartbreak Hotel series. It is clearly Borne which just looks off considering he never wore that attire. To the average fan though, Doink is Doink so Mattel probably didn't feel the need to waste further resources since the majority wouldn't know the difference anyway.

That, and budget/tooling - why pay to create an additional face/head when you can just use the standard "Doink" (which just happens to be based on Matt Borne)..... I could believe that it would be regarded as a waste of money to create a different headscan for this character.

This is the same company who couldnt release the Gobbledy Gooker without having Hector Guerrero signed even though others wore the costume. I’m not going to pretend to know the legality of it but they absolutely have Matt Borne signed to a legends contract and they don’t have Ray Apollo (that we know of). The Doink head sculpts are all of Matt and not a generic Doink face or Ray Apollo.

A character that was developed by WWE.... portrayed by Matt Borne..... then occasionally played by the following people: Steve Keirn Steve Lombardi Ray Apollo Nick Dinsmore Chris Jericho Jeff Jarrett The Bushwackers Men on a Mission We need a WFIGS legal expert to clarify these tricky copyright matters. Anyone tried to put Doink heads on Bushwacker bodies?

I wanna say the first couple Doink figures were generic face sculpts. They were done when Mattel didn’t need to have the person portraying the character under a deal if their likeness wasn’t necessary. So they may appear to resemble Borne but I don’t think that is his sculpt. Or maybe they made it too close to his likeness that they got sued and that’s why now the rule is that the person who portrayed the character has to be under a deal regardless if their likeness is being used or not.

I get the likeness issue for Doink since it's his face with just makeup covering it. Even if they use a generic face, maybe they don't want to risk it with court fees (and the possibility of losing the case). I don't get the rule for Gooker, Kim Chee, Fiend, Kane, etc. though. If a mask is fully covering your face, then I'm not sure why there would be an issue as long as WWE had the rights to the masks/attire and the characters (which they don't for someone like the Patriot). A very small part of me wondered if they were tired of us asking about Gooker so they just said that they couldn't since Hector wasn't signed (especially since other people wore different variations of the costume that were under contract).
