Today is the 30th anniversary of Razor Ramon winning his first Intercontinental championship on Monday Night Raw. He defeated Rick Martel after they were the final two men left standing in a battle royal the week prior.
This is one of my earliest wrestling memories and one I'll always cherish as Razor became an all-time favorite. I rewatched both matches countless times courtesy of the Raw Prime Cuts VHS that I religiously rented from Baltic Video on Elizabeth Avenue in Linden.

I didn't see it happen at the time but went back and watched it later. Great moment. Good for them to put the title on Razor, I think he held that belt well.

I remember watching WWF Superstars and they said HBK was stripped of the IC Title and suspended and that there would be a battle royal and the last two winners would face each other for the title the following week.
I thought it was going to be Mr. Perfect and Diesel as the last two, with Perfect winning it the following week.
I had no idea that Razor Ramon was wrestling HBK on house shows and dark TV for the IC Title days after SummerSlam. So to see Razor as one of the winners, and with Rick Martel was rather shocking!
Still, a great moment for both men. Just a shame that Rick Martel was never IC Champion.

Still wish they gave Martel a run with the belt here. Have em lose it to Razor at the Rumble
Nonetheless Razor was a great champ during his era

I remember all this really well. Martel popping back up was a nice surprise.

Have em lose it to Razor at the Rumble Nonetheless Razor was a great champ during his era I agree that holding off on Razor winning it until the Rumble wouldn't have hurt too much. Keep the same match format just replace IRS with Martel as the defending champ and still have Shawn interfere to set up their WrestleMania X match. Although, not sure you could have just put Martel over Razor clean I think it would have needed some kind of shenanigans. |
