Currently rewatching some old Survivor Series matches. I always liked the opener from the 1994 event and decided to pop that one on. The match is solid, but the star power and especially the story behind the Diesel/HBK blow-up is what always draws me in.
I kept it rolling. The next match was Doink and the three little clowns versus Lawler and his little kings. The Doink match from Survivor Series 1993 is probably one of the worst matches ever and this one usually ranks up there with most fans. I had a blast watching it! Don't judge by the name either. I LOATHE babyface Doink. This is pure silliness no questions asked, but wrestling doesn't need to always be so serious and this provided some serious entertainment value. Lawler was the MVP. The way he bosses around his team and all the times their schemes backfire cracked me up. The crowd was into it as well which helped.
This was prime New Generation shenanigans. Happy Turkey Day!!! 🦃

Heel King was fantastic during this era Sad thing about this event was it was Gorilla's last PPV in the booth I was thinking about that watching it. Outside of a few plugs for Radio WWF, the last time he was on commentary for a PPV was Royal Rumble 1993 which sadly also marked the final show with him and Bobby calling the action.

On the topic of Shawn/Diesel, I still stand by it shouldve main evented WM XI. I understand why they went with LT/Bam Bam but still
You had a feud where the seeds were planted the previous Summer that wrote itself so nicely. Shawn messed up one too many times by super kicking Big D,you get Diesel finally snapping here at this event, winning the big one a few days later and Shawn winning the Rumble in January to set up the big showdown
No question in my mind this deserved that main event in Hartford

Bigelow absolutely helped him, but their match was actually good and one of the few bright spots on what is definitely a terrible WrestleMania. Still hate the horrible Jackknife that Shawn took to end their match.

The third match is a classic between Bret/Backlund.

I have always liked watching this PPV. My dad was not a wrestling fan, but even he got into this as he loved Chuck Norris and wanted to see what he would do. The opening match is a lot of fun and at the time I was so invested in the HBK/Diesel angle.
Owen deserved a god damn award for his, he well and truly got me here, I was mad as hell, but also laughing at the same time, especially with his gloating over his mum and dad.

What is funny about that match is that Shawn Michaels himself has said that he wanted to make himself the star of this match even though Kevin Nash was his best buddy, but Bret Hart went above and beyond to make Deiesl look great each time they wrestled, classic ol HBK lol. For me, that was the main event match, I have said it before, but growing up in the UK, until this, I had no freaking clue who LT was. To be fair the WWF did a good job of making him seem like a big deal, but no way should he and Bam Bam have gone on last. After learning about the horrible details about the kind of guy who is many years later, it makes it even worse that he got the main event spot over Diesel and HBK!

Intended to only revisit the opener and ended up watching the entire PPV. At the end of the Lawler match, the three little kings keep raising their hands in celebration which pisses Jerry off. He eventually kicks them out of the ring and says on the mic "get out of here, I hate short people." 😂

The third match is a classic between Bret/Backlund. Only problem I had with the opening match was that Razor's team couldn't get one or two eliminations first. Very strange that Davey or the Kid or even Razor couldn't beat one of the Teamsters (great name by the way). Razor or Davey eliminating Double J or Anvil could have helped a bit.

Overall a fun event. My favourite match is actually Lex Luger & team vs the Million Dollar Corporation.

I personally would've swapped Backlund for Owen, he should've won the belt from Bret. Have Backlund be Owen's manager & have segments where Bob's taught him the Chicken wing. Owen holds on to the belt until the Royal Rumble, where Diesel wins it. Then leave off from there.

This and SummerSlam ‘93 were two shows I grew up on because my parents ordered the PPVs for me and recorded them to VHS, so I always had access to them whenever I wanted to watch a wrestling show. I still have both tapes, but unfortunately for this show, everything except the first minute or so of the SVS ‘94 pre show got taped over - and it wasn’t even for anything worthwhile! Just some day my dad was randomly watching C-SPAN and hit record on the VCR. I always made it a point to remind him how much that bothered me lol.
I watched it on the WWE Network several years ago on the morning of Thanksgiving, and it definitely still holds a place in my heart. Helen throwing in the towel after Bret was locked in the crossface chickenwing for forever is a moment burned into my brain. Bob Backlund was the greatest heel I’d known up ‘til that point. Chuck Norris being the enforcer for the Casket match. Lawler and Doink’s teams were never this bad thing to me - just an alternate form of entertainment in wrestling. It was for little kids and not meant to be taken so seriously.
One aspect of Survivor Series that I always loved and made it seem like a special, once-a-year event was when the teams entered together. I get such a rush of nostalgia from pairings you wouldn’t normally see on the same team, walking in a single file line as they’re introduced one at a time. Bonus points if there is a video wall behind them.

Owen could have come out during the Rumble match (assuming Bret would have been in it since he wouldn't be facing Diesel), Owen distracts Bret causing him to get eliminated. Then Owen and Bret face each other one more time at WM to finally end the feud (Bret gets his win back from his Survivor Series loss and the previous WM10 loss). They could have also set it up to be a tag team match between Bret & Davey vs. Owen & Anvil to end that feud with was a big part of the fall of 1994. After Anvil gets fired from the company, Owen brings in his mystery partner (Yokozuna) to face Bret & Davey Boy.
