Have to say this might have been the best year of my life, considering all I’ve gotten to do, experience and see. Figured I’d do a year in review and everyone can do the same if they want. If anything else this place could use some more positivity. What was your favorite moment of the year? Did you get to experience anything new? Did you visit any cool places? What are your goals going into 2024?
I’ve admittedly been overly braggy, and sorry about that, but I’ve just been really hyped on my life and that’s not very common for me. So here’s a few awesome things that happened in my 2023. Pic heavy, so spoilers included.
Year started off with a duel trip with my best friend to Italy and Egypt. When I turned 30, I told myself I wanted to visit every continent by 35. The pandemic put a wrench in that plan but I decided to try my best to catch up.
Been to Europe before but this was my first time in Africa. The pyramids blew my mind, as well as the culture shock of just experiencing Egypt. Luckily my best friend is from India which shares a lot of similarities with Egypt I guess. Him being much more out going certainly helped too. We stayed in a hotel a few hundred feet from the pyramids in Giza. Took a tour which included them, Memphis, and Saqqara. Got to even go in a newly discovered tomb underground which was incredible. Only spent a few days in which we checked out a few museums, took a Nile boat ride, and generally just explored.
Italy was probably my favorite country I’ve been to. At the very least, easily the best food I’ve had in my life. Rome was home base so naturally we saw the Colosseum, the ruins of ancient Rome, and visited the Vatican. Outside the city we took a day trip to Positano which is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been, and Pompeii which I’ve wanted to visit since learning about in middle school. Can’t put into words just how much history I was surrounded by. I so badly want to go back one day.
Next up was a weekend in LA for both nights of Wrestlemania which might end up being my favorite event I’ve ever gotten to attend. Sorry, didn’t take a selfie here.
A couple months later I got to visit Chicago a couple of times. First was to see Blink 182 live. A very last minute decision but since I grew up with them and it’s been so long since Tom was with the band, I had to make the trip. Phenomenal show. Then a few weeks later I attended the very first Collision episode, and was lucky enough to snag front row for fairly cheap. Being the Punk mark that I am, I try to attend when he has a big moment.
Another cool thing I’ve gotten into this year is buy horror masks and props and attending cons to get them signed. I’ve met a ton of horror icons including Robert Englund, Nick Castle, and Tom Atkins. Favorite con was the Halloween 45 on in LA where I met every actor that has played Michael Myers, still alive, and had them sign their respective masks.
With Detroit only a three hour drive, I made the weekend trip to attend Summerslam. Really fun event. No selfie here either though.
Every year I try and take a trip for my birthday. Like starting each trip around the sun in a new place. With this being the big 35 I wanted to cross Asia off my list and Tokyo has always been a place I’ve wanted to go. I attended a NJPW event in Korakuen Hall, saw the Tokyo Dome, ate at Ribera, took the bullet train to Osaka and Koyoto, climbed a mountain, navigated the train system, busted Tokyo Disney, and just explored everything I could in a week. Absolutely loved it there. Since attending a wrestling show at the Tokyo Dome is on my bucketlist, I’ll need to find my way back eventually.
And to end the year before the holidays I went back to Chicago for the Survivor Series. I didn’t believe Punk was coming back, but wanted to see Cody in his first War Games match. Snagged a third row seat and got my first ringside chair. Lost my sh*t when Punk returned and stood on said chair to see him. No selfie, but you can see me if you look for me.
Like I said, best year of my life so far. So thankful for all I got to experience. Already plan on starting my 2024 off strong as I just bought a ticket to the Rumble. Other goals I have are Wrestlemania, Peru, and hopefully Antarctica. Will see what I can actually manage. Hope you liked seeing my 2023 and that you share yours too!
If you’d like to see more travel photos, I’m on Instagram at travelwells. I don’t follow anyone on it but it’s public if you just want to take a peak!
