So, since the 2024 Royal Rumble is less than 30 days away, I've been watching a lot of previous Rumbles from all the eras... 80s,90s,2000s,2010,2020s...
Some were amazing, some were good, some were decent, some sucked lol, some was just pure trash and some were just pure epic stuff.
Now the 1997 Royal Rumble match itself will always be a great one for me but can anyone else relate? I loved the whole of 1997 in general so that's maybe why I love this match so much.
I feel like it's very underrated and doesn't really get enough praises. WCW was killing it at the time but WWF still had some good talent over here with Bret,Austin,Taker, Vader,Mankind, Owen, Jake etc.

It's crazy at a down time for WWF that they were able to pack that giant stadium in Texas for the Royal Rumble. It had a Wrestlemania vibe to it with how big that building was.
I don't mind it the Rumble that year. The opening matches were good. The Rumble itself had some strange one offs, like with the Mexican wrestlers they had competing in it. But it was fun.
HBK winning back the WWF Title will always be a selling point for me with that event.

I've said it a million times, but the obnoxious whistling ruins the main event for me, it goes right through me!
The actual Rumble was a lot of fun and the way Austin cheated to win was hilarious.

I liked Jerry Lawler's performance in the ring, but other than that, I'm not a fan of this one. It's still miles ahead of 1999 though.

Not one of my favorites. Other than the main event and the Austin/Bret stuff, not much else was good/great. During late 1996 and early 1997, Bret and Austin saved a lot of WWF shows. The Lawler entrance and elimination from the Rumble match was also pretty good.

Also not on my fav list. Austin/Bret and Lawler's cameo was only stuff I liked in the match
Like I mentioned during RWN last night watching ''Its Time'', The WWF/AAA experiment was a big flop. Absolute no reaction for those guys

I liked the rumble match. Was a great twist at the end that kept both Bret and Austin strong. It was unique and built a lot of interest in the Austin/Hart feud. Also loved the fatal four match at the next event that resulted.
I’m in the minority but I liked the Mexican involvement. Didn’t watch WCW at the time, so was my cruiserweight fix. Although detested Mil Mascaras eliminating himself and going through the middle rope to go to the top rope so he technically wasn’t eliminated, to save face.
Funnily enough I don’t remember much about the main event.
1997 was such a great year. Not so much Nwe Generation and not quite Attitude either.

I'll also say I did like them including Terry Funk in this once since they were in TX
Really enjoyed the interaction he had with Austin the night prior on Shotgun as well

Meh didnt love it to be honest. As mentioned the AAA stuff was bad, Fake Razor and Fake Diesel were still a thing.
Austin saved it from being a complete disaster.

That Rumble has always had a WM feel to it.
Anyway I loved the match, the Austin, Bret finish was genius booking and the guest Luchadores were fun too.
I also believe it was the only Rumble not to have a final 4.
