I know watching at the time? I had already warmed to him but I viewed him totally differently after this.

There's a great moment that just sprung to my mind about this Rumble.
It's not on the actual Rumble show, but the Stone Cold Said So VHS. Austin is taking about his Rumble win, like doing a play by play type thing over it and when he nails Phineas Godwin he lets out
"you smelly piece of trash"
Don't know why but that always got a huge pop out of me. Austin does not get the credit he deserves for being funny as hell, but still being an absolute badass at the same time.

This show, rather than Survivor Series, showed me that Austin had arrived. I'm sure Jim Ross loved seeing it. Austin wasn't even making PPVs or Clashes two years prior and here he is winning the thing, cheating or not.
Like someone said, it wasn't quite New Generation but also not Attitude Era. Definitely in between.
WWF magazine had Executioner, Billy (not Bart) Gunn, Hawk Bradshaw, Stalker slated as participants in the rumble but of course none made it. Their spot would be the AAA guys though. I personally never liked guys from outside WWF getting a spot but I get why WWF did it being in Texas and maybe also trying to gain footing in a market WCW was doing well with. Only problem was, WCW had a historian like Mike Tenay to call their Lucha matches and their Lucha stars were regular roster members in WCW so it was easy to get behind those matches and enjoy them. Missing from this show was the above four guys mentioned-Billy was injured, not sure if real or kayfabe, Terry Gordy left or was fired, the other two were in between gimmicks and I guess taken off TV. They could have used Doug Furnas, Phil LaFon, Bob Holly, Aldo Montoya and Tom Brandi and that right there replaced the four AAA guys and Terry Funk but I guess Terry got a good reaction. I just don't remember it. He didn't come out to a theme.
As others have suggested, it sure did have a Wrestlemania feel to it because of the stadium.

The feud with Bret really put him on the map. The stadium made it as big as WM, honestly.

Watched this one last night. A better PPV than I remembered. Still not great, Austin and Bret really saved this PPV. The matches were okay, but none were great. HBK/Sid was probably the best one, but nothing special. Plus, the ending was pretty predictable. Taker/Vader and Faarooq/Ahmed were both sloppy. Goldust vs. HHH was nothing great either. The 6-man tag match with the AAA stars went on too long, the audience really didn't care.
As for the Rumble match, it really was the Austin show. Not only was he great in it, but his reactions when he was in the ring alone waiting for the next entrant was awesome. This rumble suffered from the same thing that other New Generation Rumbles suffered from, a lack of star power. It was amazing how many future stars were in this rumble match, but they were just stuck in bad gimmicks: the Rock, Kane (Fake Diesel), Road Dogg (Jesse James), and Triple H (Hunter Hearst Helmsley). Definitely in a transition year. The finish to the Rumble was well done; really built up the Austin/Bret feud here.
Best elimination of the night, Jerry the King Lawler. That was great.
Overall, an okay PPV, but better than I remembered.
NOTE: I agree with others, the lady behind the announcer's desk who kept whistling was really annoying. I was wondering why they didn't toss her out, but at the end of the night they said she was members of HBK's family. Probably the last time they let her come to an event.
