I forgot about Hillbilly Jim and Mean Gene. I think there was news recently that Hillbilly Jim was signed to a legends contract again, right? I assume Mean Gene is still under a deal?

These collections are great! Definitely showing what could be done and really pop!… Unfortunately, also showing what is no longer considered socially acceptable by today’s standards. Not trying to debate right and wrong here, I know it was more a norm in that era, but that Mr. Fuji definitely wouldn’t fly today.

Not trying to debate right and wrong here, I know it was more a norm in that era, but that Mr. Fuji definitely wouldn’t fly today. What is wrong with Mr Fuji? He’s a Japanese guy in a tuxedo wearing a bowler hat and carrying a cane. He wasn’t depicted that offensively on the show. |

I suppose we’ll have to settle for American sympathizer Volkoff these days. Haha yup. The 80s needs a comeback. Even comedians are getting cancelled now. Politics are embedded in everything these days. Will only gets worse when we have social credit scores. Kind of surprised we even got the sheik recently even if he wasnt in a certain wardrobe or in camo with the iranian flag. I would love a volkov still even if they removed the ussr from his shirt. Worried a mr.fuji figure is no longer possible either. All it takes is one complaint or newscast these days. Just waiting for these to show up on gender neutral aisles soon as in california. |

Anyway, more in-line with the title of the thread (at least tangentially), I’m realizing lately I would love a Cyndi Lauper Elite. Maybe a two-pack with Captain Lou as an SDCC exclusive.

And point of the thread was to discuss the possibility of a line like this being made based on an 80s cartoon show on television during a time when the atlanta braves and cleveland indians could still chop in baseball stadiums with their original logos. Times have changed. |

I wouldn’t be against it being an RSC 2-pack, but if it had the same or even slightly lower numbers than the Ali pack, it seems like it would readily available on Mattel Creations. And yes, I’m aware, and since I don’t want to detail this thread, I will leave it at this: I think some things are better left in the past, and should have been “complained” about long before they were (and most of them were FWIW, just not in voices that were acknowledged). Goes for many things beyond wrestling figures, but in this specific case there are certain stylistic choices that were made in the cartoon that shouldn’t have been made then and should be left out of a toy line in 2024. But again I am leaving it it at that. |

But again I am leaving it it at that. Fair enough. Was a bold move for the wwf to transform highly stereotyped wrestlers into a kids cartoon. It might have been more successful if the actual voices of the wrestlers were used. Either way stereotypes exist for a reason. Future generations dont usually understand them as customs change every decade. Short shorts in nba basketball, etc. What we thought was normal then, some people frown upon now. The biggest problem with this cartoon is the international diferences that are amplified in each character to make them stand out as individuals. None of them are background characters as each episode focuses on one more than the others. With the world embroiled in (arguably) ww3, this would probably not be the best time to pit diff characters presenting diff countries(cultures) against each other even if just in figure format. I'm sure mattel is aware of this which is why steve hasnt reacted to any questions pertaining to this line in the q&a thread. Still fun to fantasize about it happening. I actually think they would look best if made like the animated batman series figures. |
