Maybe we could start getting some REALLY deep cuts if they started doing BAFs in every regular line set like Marvel Legends? If people are complaining about completing BAFs with 4 figures, what do you think the reaction would be if they needed to buy 6?

Heck, maybe even me finally getting a Max Moon 🤷🏻♂️

This does nothing to solve my main issue I raised though that the most sought after figure is made as a BAF and locked behind the purchase of four other figures, usually of which are repaints, or attires of Superstars that have been released numerous times before. I'm just coming from the perspective of someone who usually buys one of each Superstar (exceptions exist obviously in the case of people like Undertaker, Macho, Warrior, and other big names with notable gimmick changes or iconic attires), but I find that it's getting harder to justify buying my 3rd Charlotte, 3rd Lawler, 5th Kevin Owens or 8th Shawn Michaels in order to get the one British Bulldog figure that I've wanted in elite form (not Basic) for years. Not trying to crap on anyone and how they collect, it's just frustrating as a seasoned collector. I totally get/understand your frustrations and most people on this board probably agree. The issue is that Mattel can't run their business off of personal preferences of each individual member of this board. Going back to my original point, people complained when we didn't have a BAF or when they were only suited figures. And there are people that complain that they don't want to buy four figures to build the one that they want. Regardless of what Mattel does, people are going to complain so id rather have more options than less. There are other alternatives that other people mentioned to help save or recoup your cost- buying the BAF via third parties, selling off the figures you don't want, etc. I really don't think there is an alternative to get some of these figures as an elite. The versions of Virgil and Davey (already released as a basic) probably wouldn't have been released in any elite spot when they could give it to someone else more popular (Virgil's case) or more detailed/elaborate attire (Bulldog). Then there are people like John Cone and Nicholas that were probably pushed by Mattel for WWE to sign for the sole purpose of releasing them as a BAF. I don't see them even getting released in the basic line. If the BAF didn't exist, I don't think we would have most of these figures released. So it's up to us to decide how much we want them and how much we are willing to pay for them. The alternative is they most likely wouldn't exist. Thank you for the well thought out post. And for sure, they aren't going to run their business according to a niche market opinion -- that's insane. But that's also the reason why I made this topic. I wasn't sure where the community stood on BAF and the issues I raised about them so I'm glad to see people voicing their opinions one way or the other. I like having discussions about this hobby so that's all this was intended to be =). If I recall, I think the caveat to John Cone getting a figure was that he asked Mattel to also make his son Nicholas. Maybe someone could correct me if I'm wrong there. I think Mattel saw the demand here and elsewhere on social media for referees, pursued it, and those were his terms in his case. Getting referee Teddy Long is pretty damn cool too.

My only complaint with BAF at the moment is I can't get my hands on the Survivor Series Bulldog set!

That used to be the case, but Ringside's stock has gotten pretty terrible. Take that Survivor Series set for example that builds the british Bulldog. If you go on Ringside now, all they have is Shawn Michaels. I've been waiting forever to see that Jerry Lawler and I never saw him on that site or in stores. If you go on Ebay right now, there are only 5 listed for sale, so clearly they are difficult to find. That set just never appeared anywhere for me and that has become more and more common with these sets. They are just becoming almost impossible to find. Getting figures online has almost become just as difficult as finding them in stores At one point you were able to get that entire set off RSC for $100. I know because that is how much I bought it for. After the discount, tax, and shipping, it came out to $109. So for $9 extra ($22.99 per figure plus tax times 4 figures is approx $100), I got all four figures early and without any concern of having to find them in store. The amount of time you have spent looking in stores and on eBay has already surpassed that $9. They even dipped lower than that at one point, but I pulled the trigger at $100 to ensure that I got them before they sold out. You have to be can be patient in the sense of not paying the initial over inflated prices, but also know when to pull the trigger when the deal is close enough to retail and may not get any better (in your case waiting too long for Lawler and now he's gone). Yeah honestly I am to the point where I might need to start considering just pre-ordering from Ringside Collectibles from now on when it comes to anything outside of the main Elite line. I never used to cause the prices were inflated so much but, to your point, I think it might be time to just bite the bullet on this one. I just hate to support price inflation like that. But like right now, say I pre-ordered that upcoming Summerslam Elite series with the John Cone BAF. They are charging 109.99 for the set of 4. Plus 9.49 for sales tax. So that comes out to a total of $119.48. So that means I'd be paying $29.87 a figure. I just don't know if I can justify paying the price of an Ultimate for each elite, but then again if I don't I might never see these figures ever. It's just frustrating because none of this ever used to be this hard

To back up my earlier point;
Never saw the Royal Rumble Elites in any store..... where were they sold? Target, Walmart? Ringside is also sold out of them;
So if I wanted to buy the Build-A-Fig Virgil - where would I buy these at? Where are they available?
This has been typical for me with these BAF sets.
I did see the 'Mania BAF sets on the 1 Shipper I found, so I could PROBABLY have done the "Build-A-Nicholas" fig..... but I have no interest in this one.

Because it's easier to justify spending 25 dollars on a figure I have in my hand than it is to put in my card information and go through the check out process online. Plus it feels infinitely worse to pay more than retail (I don't know where you get the idea that things are usually cheaper on RSC unless you gamble on sales that only get a couple of bucks off) plus shipping on a figure, waiting for it to arrive, then having to hope they remembered to actually put padding in the box so my figure arrives in decent condition if I wanna keep it MOC. That's not even getting into store exclusive lines that RSC doesn't sell and I will never see in stores. Obviously you would need to go in the store for store exclusives, but there is no reason to stress over trying to find a main line elite in stores. But how is it easier to have to go in person than buy something online? You make it sound like buying something online is a long and grueling process. Are you like 80 years old and allergic to technology? Buying things online is quick and easy. Most websites allow you to save your credit card information to make future checkouts even easier. The amount of time you have to spend driving to the store is already longer than the two seconds it would take to checkout online. And, you don't know where I get the idea that things are usually cheaper on RSC? I clearly stated that you have to be patient, but eventually, you can get almost everything for retail or less as the prices drop or when there's a sale. I have never seen Elite 107 in stores (I always make a stop through the toy aisles when I am regularly shopping at Walmart and Target), but Ringside currently has 3 of them for $19.99 (which is less than retail), and 2 of them for $24.99 (which is only $2 more than retail). I think the extra two dollars is well worth it to save yourself the time and the gas money (and that is not even considering any of their discounts). There is absolutely no reason to stress about finding anything in the main elite line in stores when you have RSC and plenty of other websites that have these figures for retail prices. I can't name the other websites on here, but there are at least two that can get you Elite 107 right now for retail. I don't see why the stress is necessary. Save yourself the headache and the time (even though you somehow think online shopping is a difficult process). A: I have 5 Walmarts on my area, the last main line elite I saw was 106 Sami, not any of the others in the set, just Sami. Now what was the last elite set I saw before that? Elite 101 and was a it a complete set? No. Before that? Elite 92, once again not even a complete set. 5 Walmarts, I frequent all of them, still don't see anything. So bullcrap I don't have to worry about finding mainline elites. B: I'm younger than most people on this board at 25. There have been countless studies on the difference between buying things in person and online. You are 2x more like to spend more money in a store vs online. 3x more likely to impulse purchase. Fun fact if the check out process has 3 or more steps people tend to just decide it's not worth it and buy nothing. 44% of people will decide it's not worth it if they have to re-enter any information, 42% will drop it if they have to re-login for any reason. If you can't figure out the psychological difference between seeing something in store and impulsively chucking it in with the essential groceries you are already there to get and the process of browsing luxuries online, adding them to cart, logging in, putting in your address, putting in your billing information and then ordering it and still think that the issue is that "it's too difficult" then you are far too simpleminded to be having this conversation. C: You completely ignored the issue of RSC constantly shipping me items that are either damaged before sending or get damaged in the process of shipping due to their incompetence. Secondly a 2 dollar discount plus 8 dollars in shipping isn't a 2 dollar discount and that's not talking about how RSC jacks up the prices on in demand figures. "Just play the waiting game and buy them on sale", the last figure I did that for was DM Cody, guess how that turned out. I shouldn't have to play guessing games and hope the crap I want is on sale and cheaper than if I found it in store like they are supposed to be. Quite frankly I don't even understand how this is even a discussion. Main line elites should be in stores and easy to find in person. I should be able to walk into my 5 Walmarts and between them all see even a mostly complete set of them. My area shouldn't skip nearly 10 waves at a time. This is the lifeblood of the line, it's not the MAIN LINE for nothing. Yet if I didn't know any better I'd think Top Picks were the main line of this series and even those are getting tricky to find in person. You confuse stress with frustration, I'm not stressed I can't find them, I'm frustrated that this line is distributed like crap and I have to rely on 3rd parties to get things if I want rather than find it in person like I should be able to. Stress is me needing these and going out of my way to get them, frustration is me saying it I guess I won't buy the crap I want.

It's just frustrating because none of this ever used to be this hard I wouldn't buy the set at $109.99 though. What I am saying is wait, but don't wait too long. There will be a window where the set of 4 will go down, if even only slightly, and it will be enough to make it worth it. I will be buying the SummerSlam set too... but only when the set of 4 goes down to at least $100. That way after the discount, tax, and shipping, I will only be paying an extra $8-9 total for all four figures. I did the same thing with the SvS set. They weren't originally $100 for the set of 4. I waited and purchased them when it went down. But I didn't wait too long because then I would run into the chance of missing out completely. At one point, I believe they even went a bit below $100, but I was fine with it because I had the piece of mind that I bought them before they were gone. And now look. They are gone. So even though I could have gotten them for maybe a few more dollar cheaper, in the long run it worked out in that I got them before they sold out.

Stress is me needing these and going out of my way to get them, frustration is me saying it I guess I won't buy the crap I want. You're obviously not understanding. You don't have to worry about finding main line elites in stores because you have an alternative. If you are frequenting five Walmarts periodically looking for main line elites then you are literally insane. What's the definition of insanity? Isn't it doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? How many elites series have we been through and how many times have you been burned by not finding them in stores? It is literally on you for not seeking out an alternative. An alterative that quite frankly saves you not just money, but also time. I can't in my gut believe that you are 25 years old and actually think that online shopping is difficult. No one is talking about how you buy more when shopping in person. I don't care about Walmart making more money off of you. I don't care that you might buy an extra York Peppermint Patty since it is near the cash register. I was talking about shopping specifically for wrestling figures. What is easier? Going online and buying the figures in a matter of minutes? Or getting in your car, driving to the store, walking down the aisle, finding nothing, and having to do that on repeat until you either get lucky or never find them? I think that question answers itself. I also chose to not acknowledge the damaged items for a number of reasons. 1. I don't generally have this issue with RSC so it seems more like a you problem. Unfortunately, you might just be unlucky. Have I receive a damaged item from them before? Yes. But not often. 2. Receiving a damaged item in the mail is not a problem exclusive to RSC. I receive damage items from other companies like Amazon, EE, etc. 3. You also can't expect to find mint figures at retail. Between the customers touching everything, to employees not caring about their job, I have come to accept that I might not get the best conditioned boxes at retail. Do you know the number of times I have found a figure with a giant slash on the back of a box due to a boxcutter? Yeah, too many. Lastly, using DM Cody as an example for why you shouldn't wait doesn't work. 1. He's a RSC exclusive so they can literally make up whatever price they want. I can't really place a "retail" price on that since it is their figure. 2. He is one of, if not the most popular wrestler in the company right now so it makes sense that his figure would be in high demand and sellout. And even if this wasn't a RSC exclusive, I would be doubtful that you'd ever have the chance to find it in stores since it would fly off the shelves. I was talking about waiting out an elite wave. I can't think of any figure from the last ten elite waves (other than elite 101 Cody) that you couldn't eventually get off of RSC for retail price or less. So if you want to keep trying retail stores over and over again with no luck, that's your prerogative. I don't work for RSC so it is not my job to sell you on them. If you don't want an easier way to find figures, then that just leaves more stock for the rest of us. Thanks!

Marvel Legends has had BAFs for how long? Since 2004? 2005?
Build a figures are great because we were not going to get child Dominik Mysterio as a stand-alone figure. If you don’t want the other figures buy a complete one on eBay

Or this? Yeah, that's what I thought... You are spelling out with "fun facts" how people find the process of buying things online to be "difficult." No one was talking about the statistics of buying more things when shopping in person. We were talking strictly about how to buy figures you are interested in, not that you're already food shopping and happen to peruse the toy aisle. It's "I want figure A." Should you try the store or get it online. Enjoy your Peppermint Patty though. Also, no reason to bring up a completely different argument in this thread.

I brought build-a-figures back because you asked for their return and creatively, it gives even more opportunities to make looks or talent that might not make the cut otherwise.
These extra 8 BAF figs or so a year we’re getting now just don’t happen if the BAF execution goes away again.

I did see the 'Mania BAF sets on the 1 Shipper I found, so I could PROBABLY have done the "Build-A-Nicholas" fig..... but I have no interest in this one. Ringside had them though. So someone had them and you could have bought them. Before that set was gone, you could have gotten the entire set for retail through Ringside. I know because that is how I got them. So why did you wait for Target or Walmart to get them when you knew Ringside had them? Hey make no mistake - if it's something I REALLY want I do buy from Ringside. That's how I got the Mean Gene BAF set (Wrestlemania 39 I think)? I wasn't willing to risk not getting Okerlund and I spent a few extra bucks, saved myself the complete headache of searching & just bought it from Ringside. It was a huge relief.... I'm not stupid! But.... I've missed out on a few PPV figures that I assumed I would be able to find at retail (Royal Rumble Macho Man, Canadian Earthquake) because I figured - no sense paying the extra shipping I'll just pick these up at retail. Then they never show up. Shame on me, I guess? For hoping to find SOME of these things without paying extra for shipping? To reference one of your other posts, I waited.... but I waited too long and they were gone. Now I'm at the mercy of the secondary market. Where figures like this are generally $45+ and then add $7-$10 more for shipping. Forget it.

Distribution is definitely a problem and if it were better then we probably wouldn't even be having this conversation. But, I've wasted too much time early on looking for figures in stores that I have learned my lesson enough to just go straight to RSC. If I wait just a bit, the prices are fair enough that I don't have to waste time in stores, or be screwed by the secondary market.

I brought build-a-figures back because you asked for their return and creatively, it gives even more opportunities to make looks or talent that might not make the cut otherwise. These extra 8 BAF figs or so a year we’re getting now just don’t happen if the BAF execution goes away again. Why anyone would want BAF’s to go away is crazy to me. Please, keep them coming. Exactly. There will always be a finite number of slots, which people seem to not get. With some of these niche figures, it's an outside the box release or none at all. I will say the BAF lines have been exceptionally hard to get, and I'd like to see that improved. I never saw any indication the Survivor Series wave hit any retail, and it came and went in a flash from RSC.

I still like the concept, it's grown past the suited figure stage and we're getting some different executions finally. Some years are going to be better than others, but for the most part the PPV sets are worth it to me. My only worry would be that I hope that it doesn't take a good chunk of the budget away from the PPV or MNW sets long-term.
An endcap (Target) or even a display (Walmart) during PPV season for the corresponding line wouldn't be a horrible idea if that's doable. I'll say I've seen the WM40 set a ton, and the WM set in general seems to hang around for a while at retail while the other three PPV sets are weirdly inconsistent. If you had a spot to throw 2-4 cases of them, along with some regular elites, that feels like a good way to give hardcore collectors a good shot at finishing the BAF, while casual collectors can grab what they want.
