The attire isn’t the exact attire from the match. Odds are, Mattel saw this as an opportunity to get us the early 80s NWA Harley that everyone wanted, since this is more analogous to his Starrcade 83 attire, but it works close enough to his look for his longest NWA title run since he had the perm and the distinctive mustache for so much of the reign. Race wore those iconic red white and blue boots in that Starrcade 83 match. So this territory legends release doesnt qualify at all to me. Im literally passing on this set because of Harley’s huge black boots The attire for Billy Graham also isn't from that match. Very odd to highlight that particular match but not use the attires the wrestlers wore from it. Figures are still great. Too great, for me, to pass up.

Steve said without Ali this four pack doesn’t happen. So I’m extremely thankful for the deal Mattel had with him.

Love Ali as a person and his promos were legendary but it’s been so long and the kind of shite modern wrestling does too often has created more “fans” who don’t actually like combat, they like stupid bullcrapironically or watching nerds play with each other. And those people don’t appreciate boxers or extend their appreciation of Ali to wanting a figure of him. Technically speaking, Ali is the most historically important person Mattel has likely ever depicted in any toy line, since he was a revolutionary and inspired generations of activists for social Justice and athletes across almost all sports. But, sadly, that doesn’t translate to wrestling action figure collectors.

But, sadly, that doesn’t translate to wrestling action figure collectors. Ali was a great athlete and boxer...but this line is for pro wrestling. This is going to seem radical to you I know, but check this out: Wrestling fans don't appreciate figures of boxers in a wrestling figure line because it's a wrestling figure line. Especially when they see multiple figures of that same boxer in the wrestling line. Wrestling action figure collectors want to buy wrestling action figures. Weird huh? Go figure. Pun intended.

I'd say Monsoon and Ali's interaction is a pretty memorable pro-wrestling moment, as is Ali refereeing at the first Wrestlemania. As a wrestling fan and collector of wrestling figures, these looks were must-haves for me. The boxing attire in the Legends line...Not so much.

Why is it so hard to believe that higher-ups at Mattel would sign off on a set like this based on the fact that Muhammad Ali is a major worldwide icon? It might not even be based on sales of his prior figures, but on just having a major name like that in a Mattel Creations set.

I already skipped the last retro set because he was in it.

Here’s what y’all ain’t getting. Steve, Bill, etc first have to sell to their bosses. Their bosses who short packed King Harley Race. Who wanted to make the legends GH Bruno a Target online exclusive. Who vastly underproduced Gorilla. Who saw talents like Rocky Johnson, Mae Young, and Billy Graham underperform and warm pegs. Those same bosses who upped the production numbers for SDCC Ali. So yeah, I suspect when they went to pitch this set, they knew Ali would be what gets them to agree to it.

Just shows you they are hesitant on anything pre 80s. I guess Powertown will have to pick up the slack for us. Just too bad they are so slow getting figures out.

"Isacc Yankem will fly off the pegs! Let's do The Shockmaster! But if you want a Harley Race and a Superstar Billy Graham you're gonna need to package it with a suited Ali! That'll do the trick!"
- Mattel, I guess.
