Starrcade - WCW’s version of Wrestlemania. This is the event to end all events. The end-all, be-all. Nothing is bigger. And in 1994, we got Hulk Hogan in his biggest battle yet against…The Butcher? WTF?
In one of the biggest creative control pulls ever, Hogan passed on working with names such as Flair and Vader to work with his best friend, Brutus Beefcake. A man so infamous with gimmick changes that it even trumps the amount of time Big Show has turned face/heel.
Now the question at hand - who’s the “Brutus Beefcake” of WM main events? Has there ever been a midcarder so out of place in the WM main event such as Brutus was in the Starrcade main event? While I don’t think anyone is as out of place as Brutus was, there’s a few names that stick out to me…
- Sgt. Slaughter: A career midcarder, Slaughter shot up the card after turning heel and going against the USA. He was never booked particularly strong, and once his angle with Hogan was over it was back to the midcard.
- The Miz: This one seems to get a lot of debate these days, but even in 2011 Miz was such an odd choice to become WWE Champ, let alone main event Wrestlemania. And placing him right between John Cena and The Rock showed just how truly out of place he was.
- Bam Bam: I’m a big Bam Bam fan. He had a ton of potential at the time and was seen as a great prospect. However, looking back in hindsight, his place on the card just didn’t seem to fit that of a WM main eventer.
- Lawrence Taylor: I don’t like including him since he was a celebrity doing a one-off appearance. However, he still sticks out when look at every WM main eventer.
What do you think?

PJ will hate me for saying this but Paul Orndorff.
I don't really count special attraction guys like LT or Mr T....I hate Miz but at the time he was a fantastic heel. But to me Orndorff just never did anything in WWF. Like literally at no point. He lost seemingly every major fued and never won a title.
I think Orndorff run in WCW was light years better then his time in WWF.

Prior to that, he did work main event programs with Bob Backlund for the world title. He was also a main eventer in the feud with the Iron Sheik.

I loved Sgt in the main event tbh, well deserved for him. The match with Hogan sucked badly but at the time it was a big deal and the whole feud was good.

I would say Slaughter either given how big the storyline was and with him being the "traitor" it really HAD to be him in the position, given his once major persona of the All American Hero. Sgt. Slaughter transcended wrestling, if that's the right term. He and Hulk were probably two of the few wrestlers well known to non wrestling fans.
A Warrior/Hulk main event may have been better for star power in WWF but really how much better? Hulk would have had to get his win back and Warrior was horrible to deal with.
I would say Bam Bam too. For the years (to this day) that people complain the Kliq held him back, I've never bought in to that. His fate was sealed in late 93 losing to the four Doinks. He never had a meaningful feud afterwards. He was just a warm body for Vince to get a football celebrity on his event. Bam Bam probably had the best look of a tough guy going against LT. Some who didn't know how wrestling worked, may have even thought LT was doomed but Bam Bam's spot was to lose and that could have gone to anyone.

I genuinely don't think they had a Beefcake in the ME...genuinely dont. By the time Miz was in a WM ME things were much different & Vince was completely and utterly creatively bankrupt so I don't think he counts.
Bam Bam should have been left heel as a destroyer in 1995. People will say oh that doesn't work he lost too many matches but so did Sid in 95.
HBK beat Sid clean in the middle on a Raw main event in 95 to end their feud. Yet Sid was repackaged a year later to be a credible world title contender. The power is in the 4 Ps...Pencil, Push, Presentation & Patience.

Can't say a talent was so far out of their element in a main event spot, just bad match structure or creative booking. Miz-Cena could've been decent enough is Miz was 100% cowardly chickensh*t heel and Cena was a conquering hero, but one slip up and Miz takes full advantage. Not them going blow-for-blow with a full heat stretch. Although if you played your cards right, Cena, Punk, and Rock could have had a three-year angle culminating in 2013 (if Punk re-signs for the $).
Because it feels somewhat relative, Styles should have been positioned to take the belt from Brock at 35. Rollins was hot the year prior but the Mania push killed him, gave it the dreaded "overcoming the odds" feel and paid off in an severely underwhelming match. Meanwhile, Styles and Lesnar had a banger at SvS 2017 and we got robbed of a rematch at the following year's event thanks to Daniel Bryan. AJ could have gotten another solid main event push and a meaningful one at Mania, and gotten his win back from Lesnar.
Not saying Rollins was a midcarder, but he had much more important business doing a farewell Shield three-man tag, giving the group a quality Mania match. Slide Orton the WWE Title for Kofi to win it off of, Bryan teams with Rowan something title related.

jericho at wmx8 comes to mind. after rock/hogan people were tired, and no one was that invested in the jericho/hhh feud that had largely made jericho look weak as hell going into it.

Miz vs Cena sucked hard but I get why Miz was put in the main event tbh. He was a great heel. I'd still say that Punk deserved it over him tho at that time.

I will always maintain that It wouldn't have mattered where that match was.....it would've bombed. It had NOTHING going for it. Feud stank. HHHs face run was deflated after RR02 when He wasn't the clear favorite to win & did. Air was sucked outta the building when Austin was eliminated and reaction to HHHs win was tepid. 3 Month feud with Steph featuring Kurt & Jericho as surrogates blew. Jericho struggled working as a heel too...their chemistry was off once the dynamic was switched. Jericho being made look like a jobber sucked(this is from someone who isnt a big Jericho fan) & he was also booked to be fairly stupid. Constant references to Jericho being out of his depth sank in with crowd. Steph...I think the crowd was kind of burnt out on McMahons? BUT she was a heat magnet & nobody gave a crapabout Jericho. HHH insisting match went on last was death knell. Jericho was zero threat to HHH & HHH wasn't over enough as a face to carry it all.

I was thinking Jericho myself. He was a comedy midcarder, like Brutus, who jumped ships & was a main eventer (although it took Jericho longer and he climbed the card naturally), but from a fan perception, if you turned on WCW in 1997 and turned on WWF in 2002, you might think, how TF did he get here?
