Enjoy them & do not expect a return in value.
Even if you offered me a slightly absurd amount for what I have, I’m not selling. I’ll make money by investing or saving, etc, not hoping that my Jakks Ultimo Dragon buys me a sports car. Or my MOC Bunny Chase eventually paying for a tuition.

I just bought the first two elite Mankind figures MOC, despite already owning them. What I really want is for Mattel to re release these first elite Mankind figures so I can have some updated versions. Early elite Randy Orton's as well somwe can get a proper bald Viper Orton. Re releases do not destroy all value for those who are looking for the original figures in the original boxes.

I don't buy these things expecting them to be like Apple stock investments... if anything this hobby is putting me into the poor house more than anything else. But, I suppose if you are worried about these things "holding value"..... Get 'em signed, boys..... get 'em signed while you can. Catch is, I could never sell these. What are you doing in my house? Is this a house? or Buddy's Toy Shop!?

I don't really care about the value of my collection. I didn't pay eVay prices to obtain the rare ones I got, I got them all for retail
However the re-release still annoy the crap out of me cause I think of all of the cool new figures or looks I could have gotten instead. Or, even worse they throw a bunch of re-releasea into a BAF line and force me to buy 4 figures I already own just to get a BAF I want. It's such a lame thing to do

What are you doing in my house? Is this a house? or Buddy's Toy Shop!? Great stuff there! To add on a bit - the OP (before he deleted his post) said something at the end about his rare figures retaining "that special feel"..... Well, my autographed figures will ALWAYS retain "that special feel" because I had each and every one of them personally signed. I've never bought a signed figure. I don't even mind when the wrestlers personalize them - I've heard people complain about that. I guess the wrestlers feel that personalizing them will reduce the probability of resale? In my mind - when they personalize the signatures on the figures "To Frank" - they've just created a 1:1 figure. How many other Roddy Piper JAKKS figures are out there signed "To Frank"? Don't know what they're worth signed, and I don't really care.....

Most of us are grown ass men in our 30s, 40s, and 50s buying toys. We all should know better than to not make financial investments in these little plastic men. The value should be in the joy it brings you. Buy some stocks or real estate if you want to invest in something that’s gonna appreciate monetarily over time.

Don’t care about the “value”… they are toys - and the vast majority of my collection from Mattel was purchased at retail pricing cause nothing was ever “hard” to get, if you were to prepared to buy online (and as an international collector, we don’t have much choice but to buy online). “Investing” in toys is a fast way to loose money!!
But the collectability of the Mattel lines is gone for me. Fine line maybe… I’m also a MOCer, so I enjoy the older stuff, mostly because the new packaging on elites is paper thin and feels cheap!
Just my thoughts, happy for those that “missed out” and I’m certainly benefiting from Hot Toys taking a similar approach - all comes out in the wash!

Nice to see I am not the only one who has noticed that the packaging has become paper thin- its so cheap you could actually crush the box holding it in one hand and squeezing with likely minimal effort. Even the Superstars figures which come on a bubble card and should come with more stronger packaging, have the same cheap, paper thin cardboard. Compare that to Marvel Legends Spider-Man Retro figures (which I also collect), they are also packaged on a bubble card but the card is good quality, very thick cardboard. Not only has the quality of the packaging gotten worse but the overall quality of the figures has declined as well in recent years. I keep reading comments here about figures either having very loose joints or very tight joints and most recently I read a comment from someone stating that the interchangeable heads won't stay on and fall off very easily. I recently opened the Survivor Series Hogan figure I picked up a while back and it has two left legs and the arms are very loose. I know these are mass produced and mistakes will happen but they seem to be happening with a lot greater frequency then they used to which is not acceptable IMO as these figure cost a lot more now.
As far as the value aspect, I think figures produced during the early years of Mattel's run still have value, the packaging was more durable and the figures were better quality then the stuff they are releasing now. The original legends line had great packaging with the bubble card and for MOC's, these figures look great displayed in box. I like the older figures as I prefer the old method they used to paint on the facial features compared to the face printing crap they use now where you get wonky looking eyes, half painted facial hair or improperly painted facial hair. The newer releases are a step up with the interchangeable heads & hands and the double jointed arms but the older figures still hold up IMO and you can easily do an arm swap with certain figures to add double jointed elbows. The double jointed elbows I believe were purposely left off early elites so they could introduce them at some point in the future (which is what they are doing now) as some new feature to get you to re-buy the same figures over again just to get the double jointed elbows.

I'm a loose collector about 90% of the time and I will very much agree that packaging has gotten shoddy. I got a pair of Sami and Kevin figures from the Wargames set and my immediate reaction upon opening the Ringside box for the to-open ones was "Thank god I had my MOC ones shipped in protectors, this is pathetic"

All true. This is a problem with sports cards too. Newer cards are paper thin. Companies are trying to save money but the packaging for the legends figures for example is so cheap that you can rip the pacakge with your pinky finger. As far as wrestling figures i am not a box collector but if they ever start doing the same with the colliseum collection than im done with those. Hasbro has done the opposite with their new classified retro figures. Hasbro is more attentive to packaging and correcting errors. They will recall figures more often out of safety concerns and when customer feedback warrants it. I wish mattel would step up their game a bit but they are too big to fail and with that invincibity comes a bit of arrogance and lack of interest to change the status quo. If it aint broken why fix it. This is why i always say if you want change you have to say no to inferior product. Its already happening with the rock maiva 3 pack. Even though we seem to be many, the amount of resellers and scalpers outnumber us. In the end most of them dont care if the package is paperthin. And as we are seeing with multiple lines, mattels number one customer are the resellers. We are only important to them for feedback kind of like beta testers of sort. I can imagine a company like powertown making a difference if they eventually are able to mass release their product at a much faster rate. Anyways op is now immortalized and in his honor we should keep this thread going kind of like a sdcc reveals thread. Lets get this to 1000 pages so op enters the hall of fame.

I will jump on the thing of other company's retro figures. The X-Men retro cards are almost sinful in their satisfaction. I adore them. The Playmates retro April is sturdy enough that I dropped a case of monster against it and didn't separate the bubble from the back. But Mattel? Yeah they're like tissue paper. I'm afraid to touch my Retro Sami. Not until I can get a defender for him. Same as my two Sami and Kevin basics. I'm terrified a breeze too strong from my AC will wreck the cards (since I don't know where to get cases for them). Again Kinda depressing.

Never cared about value if it's that good of a figure everyone should have a fair shot at getting without spending money up the ass

How everything is laid out neat and uniform. The only Mattel/WWE figures that come close to being satisfying to me are the UE figures. The DM figures are also lovely, but not in a "satisfying" way, I just like them cuz they look cool. I'd love to see about getting some more of the DM line, but right now, it's just the new Cody, Mick, and Punk is coming eventually.
