Pixel Dan posted a video recently where he went to the recently opened DFW Intl Airport's ToysRUS. He was less than thrilled. He talked about how TRU allowed expansion and risk taking in the toy aisles. Then A thought hit me:
Back in the day, anything popular would have cheaper knockoff, inspired by, unofficial, complementary toy lines. MOTU had Galaxy Warriors. Think of the mutant animal craze that was fueled by TMNT. Things like The CORP trying to capitalize off of GI JOE. Although not into military toys, I always found TRU's own brand of military figures and vehicles impressive. TRU and KB needed stock, and that opened up ground for all of these.
But today, those cheap knockoff, inspired by, unofficial, complementary toy lines are now "boutique" and charging a pretty penny. Four Horsemen Valaverse the several indie fantasy toy lines trying to attack the MOTU and D&D crowds. It seems like 3rd party, non-licensed, action figures are on the rise. 3rd party, non-licensed TMNT and Power Rangers being an example.
Its ironic and funny. It goes to the argument that toys today are actually for adults with money, not kids.
