no, guys like Takeshi Morishima are exactly why I gave up on WWE. Last I checked WWE does not employ 335lb Japanese heavyweights who move around like cruiserweights. Maybe I'm wrong, but according to the roster pages of Raw, ECW, and Smackdown no Japanese wrestlers are employed weighing over 225lbs. Why exactly is he getting pushed? because he's big and scary and looks good for PPV. Why you ask? Well he's a future NOAH headliner, he's very good at his character of being a monster. He's worked some incredible matches with Nigel McGuinness, Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, Brent ALBRIGHT, Claudio Castagnoli, and even BJ Whitmer. It's not because he's talented, or I should say the most talented around. He's not the best wrestler on the planet, but he has had an amazing run as ROH champ. It's amazing how over he is, considering a year ago he wasn't even a blip on the radar of many American indy wrestling fans. Not because it's building a big angle. Actually he's the champ, because they are building to a big match where he drops the belt. Just as they did with Samoa Joe losing to Austin Aries. not because he's been dedicated to the fed for a long time and deserves it, When you come recommended by Harley Race, Kenta Kobashi, Mitsuharu Misawa, Vader, and Ryu Nakata, you deserve it. When you establish yourself by having a great match with Samoa Joe, and Joe tells Gabe Morishima is the guy to carry the belt in the same manner of booking he did, you put the belt on him. Not even because he sells tickets. nope. Actually, Morishima headlined a show in Japan for ROH that drew close to 2000 people in Tokyo. Morishima gets me to buy a ticket when I'm told I'm not being comped. He also sells DVD's to the valuable Japan market. Maybe you should look at all aspects of international business before complaining. he's the champ because it looks good for the mark audiance. A mark audience thinks he's a fat Japanese guy who looks like Yokozuna. A smart audience sees a quality wrestler who is a monster, leading to the story of David vs. Goliath just as was seen in NYC during the incredible MOTY Danielson vs. Morishima. If not, Danielson, Nigel, or Homicide would be champion. (Homicide may be questionable due to TNA, but Nigel or Danielson would definately be big..). Maybe even one of the Briscoes. Last I checked, Danielson had the belt from September of 2005 through December of 2006. The second longest reign in ROH history. Nigel as champ would be fine, but it won't happen because Nigel's involved in other angles. The Briscoes currently hold the tag belts and are more valuable as a duo, not as singles. What does Morishima really do better than anyone else? It's not what he does better, it's what he does differently. He's a different character and wrestler then anyone else in ROH. He's a quality pro wrestler, and will continue to do so. He's not that great of a stiff wrestler, others do it much better (Kingston.. and Kingston is preshowing!) Being a stiff wrestler doesn't make you great, it makes you look believable. But Morishima's style makes you look at him as an unstoppable monster, which is exactly how he's being booked. What is so hard to comprehend about that? not because he's a great technical wrestler (he sucks.. and if this were the case, Hero would be champ, main eventing against Danielson) Hero is far from being a great technical wrestler. He's an above average wrestler and a great heel. Do you really expect a 335lb man to be a technical wrestler? and he's not that much of a draw (Delirious out draws him, big). The only thing he has going for him is the claim of possibly being Terry Gordy's illegitimate Japanese baby Delirious is far from being a draw, if he was a draw he'd be constantly headlining. I like Delirious, but he knows his place just as well as Gabe does. Morishima is a big name in Japan. He helps with international business and is establishing his name as an American draw holding the most important title in wrestling. I'm amazed, that people say things without even thinking. I just wish I didn't have to constantly correct them.

Long story short, I liked him when I first saw him in NOAH and despite feeling bad for Homicide when the switch happened, I still like him now.
It must be said, though, that I don't keep up with ROH at all, so I have no idea if he's good there or not. I'm just a fan of him judging from what I've seen, not what I've heard.

I'm not a fan of Morishima at all, although I do have to admit he's had 2 stellar matches that i've seen and no doubt this past Saturday vs Danielson was unbelivable and I cant wait to see it. To me though it seems Morishima needs a great opponent to carry him to a great match.. his contest with say BJ Whitmer or Homicide (neither of those 2 really can wrestle imo.. Homicide > Whitmer.. but even then thats not saying much) were very sloppy and just seemed very pieced together

I'm still warming up to him. His wrestling ability is good for a big man. Better than most big men in wrestling. I dont think he's God though like so many other people. I dont think I've seen a standout match from him yet which is why I'm still hesistant to buy into him completely. I personally think his match against Joe from 5YF in NYC was one of the most over rated matches of the year.
Then there is the character aspect. He's clearly not a full ledged face or heel. He has signs of faces (IE matches against Pearce & Rave in Chicago at the last PPV) but nothing that is clear to me at least. So I dont know if I'm suppose to boo or cheer. I guess thats the beauty of having an opinion. I can just sit there & watch.

Since i've watched more of him now i can definatley say i'm not a fan. I just cannot get into any of his matches. I mean i saw the Tokyo one with McGuiness and everyone saying it was a MOTY candidate. I thought it was boring and i'm a Nigel fan!
He's just bland and meh. Plus he cannot sell a single move.
Oh and completely agree with HHH316 about the character aspect. The last two matches of his I watched was one against Roderick Strong so he was a face and then a Tag match NOAH vs ROH where he was a heel.

The match between Mori and Nigel at Fighting Spirit was labeled a MOTYC, not the Tokyo one. He's just bland and meh. Plus he cannot sell a single move. He's not supposed to sell, he's a monster compared to the entire ROH roster. He did however sell over the weekend against Danielson's kicks. Oh and completely agree with HHH316 about the character aspect. The last two matches of his I watched was one against Roderick Strong so he was a face and then a Tag match NOAH vs ROH where he was a heel. Against Strong anyone is a face. He's a heel in 99.999% of other matches.

It adds to the 'monster heel' aspect, in that he doesn't care who it is,he just wants to hurt someone. Its what I wish WWE would do with Umaga more.

Since I have started watching indy wrestling (The past year) Morishima has been one of the guys that I have enjoyed watching. His matches are usually good, and his hard hitting style is really enjoyable to watch.

First off, how does him being chubby have to do with him being a rip-off of Joe? Is any heavy guy that holds the belt in the future going to be classified as a Joe rip-off too? Second, how do they have the same fighting style? Joe was 100x's better then him. All Morishima does is "stiff" moves, that alot of the time look weak to me. Joe could move for his size, and could do some incredible things that morishima has never done/will never do. Morishima just seems to try to get through his matches. I haven't seen one match that made me say "Wow" except maybe his match at Fighting Spirit. Third, you spelled the word "freeking" instead of "freaking" in your sig, and it is really bothering me for some reason..

Your right joe has done things in the ring that morshima will never do and what i meant buy chubby is the are both fat but have wrestling skills not alot of fat wrestlers have that

I guess because Barry Bonds is black that makes him like Hank Aaron. Or maybe because Sonjay Dutt is an Indian that makes him like the Great Khali. Seriously, stop while you're ahead.
