What do you think of death matches? Do you like them? Do you think they can be as good as a regular match? Do you think it takes just as much talent to work a death match as any match, or do you feel that anyone crazy enough to be hit with a light tube can work a death match?

I'm not a fan. No disrespect to any of the guys who work the death match style, but I find them really boring and repetitive.

Death/Hardcore matches can be very very good when properly done right. Often times people (wrestlers and promoters) seem to get carried away with just making it sound more hardcore then the last one. Some guys just have ability to tell a story and build up to make the gimmicks mean something more. There is some degree of talent that it takes to do a deathmatch, and stay somewhat healthy in the long term. Anyone can get tossed off a Ryder truck. However to take the bump properly and live to wrestle another day is a whole other story. No one is claiming that the JC Baileys and the Shadow WX's out there are 5 star wrestlers. But they're no Evad Sullivan.

I prefer more technical matchs, but I wish in death matchs they would actually do their moves, just into like a table or barbwire. So for me 80% regular, 20% death/hardcore matchs.

I love deathmatches. Stepping outside any argument with DEAN, they're one of my favorite things to watch. I think Miyamoto/Sasaki from Feb. 07 proves deathmatches aren't beating people with weapons, but they take alot of story telling. Also, the old FMW deathmatches were the shit.

I do like them occasionally, but not very often.

Not a fan. I'm of the belief that bloodbath matches should be saved to end really heated feuds.

I'm a big death match fan, here in the states It's more of a "cut me, cut you" style. Example, Freakshow, Deranged, Corp. Robinson. I love the stuff over in Japan, actual wrestling is required, the spots build to even bigger spots. Sure the matches get repetitive at times, and of course we have the puro-no selling at times, but I love watching Numazawa, Kasai, Miyamoto, Sasaki, Ito, and Koybashi among others.
It seems over here in the states the purpose of death matches is all about doing the spots. At times I feel there is no storytelling and emotion within the match. Sure, here there's probably more feud based death matches. But in Japan, I feel that every match has that "big" match atmosphere. That makes the match so much better in my eyes.

Can't say I'm a fan, though I'm sure two talented wrestlers could entertain me with one... it just seems like any trace of storytelling is replaced with shock factor. In some deathmatch clips I've seen the wrestlers might as well be torturing themselves... they just seem so willing to get hurt by eachother... ex. guy waits "dazed" for minutes while his opponent sets up the next death-defying spot. Bottom line, death matches are to pro wrestling what the Jack Ass crew is to extreme sports... entertaining? yes. talented? not so much.

i love them. i think it's a great style and a lot of fun to watch. However, i don't think it takes a certain type of wrestler to work one. i've dicked around before with thumbtacks, glass and shit, i mean it hurts but not as bad as one would imagine. I think you need to be high as crapor drunk as crapto be in one though. I like ho wIWA throws one or 2 in on a show for varieties sake. I'd defininitely try one if i ever go pro.

Do you mean American or Japanese? Japanese death matches usually have story telling and actually take talent. However in America it's just a bunch of drug addicts who don't know how to do anything else so they resort to doing death matches. It don't take any talent at all. I have to disagree with even finding it entertaining because to me it's not. If I wanna see someone put their body through all that I want to see it in a feud with story telling and emotion.

I'm going to curse a lot and not make any specific point for blind rage!! [/Undisputed Kid] Death Matches draw crowds. Perfect example would be the 2006 IWA Deep South Carnage Cup. There were probably close to 200 people in attendance for that show, when in the same building like 2 months prior, a show with Mike Quackenbush, Eddie Kingston, Larry Sweeney, Jigsaw, and others drew 20 people paid. And that wasn't far off from the average crowd for non death match shows.

Of course they draw, you have the blood trusty fans, if you even wanna call them that and that will blow their load to see someone kill themselves. Death matches are for the "fans" that just like the moves, the blood and the violence. It's not real wrestling. If you're gonna put yourself through all that **** it should be to end a feud in a match that has psychology and emotion. Death Matches in America are completely awful. Oh and as far as making a point. I've already made mine. Not much else to say. Sure you might have Hero or Kingston work a death match here or there but they are hardly death match guys.

OMGZ THEY AREN'T FANS THEY DON'T LIKE PSYCOLOGY!! OMGZ!!
By using terms like "psycology" in your argument, you prove that it's you, in fact, that's not a fan, but rather a smart mark.
Marking out for moves is what fans are supposed to do..

Marking out for moves is what fans are supposed to do.. It's not just about the psychology but also the emotion that goes into it. Death Matches are just a bunch of bumps with no real reason other than to pop the crowd. You can stick with your garbage wrestling and I will stick with what wrestling is suppose to be.
