Death matches don't draw in America or Japan when it's compared to regular pro-wrestling.

The death matches our passed their prime in my opinion. You think about the mid 90's to early 2000's. Death matches were popular in Japan as well as in the US. You had the major boom in Japan with FMW, IWA and BJW. Then in the US it was popular with CZW, IWA and many mid-west feds. Actually the "death" of death match wrestling in CZW has been what I thought really killed them. This was a time when everything was so new. But there's only so many times you can watch a guy get hit with a lighttube, fall into tacks or get thrown into barbwire. And the novelty wore off. This was especially relevant in the US. A month or so ago, I watched IWA-MS KOTDM 2007 and it was like I was watching a show from 2002. It was the same old spots and same action. The thing is, only a certain group of guys will do these matches. And there's only so many times I can watch them do a death match, because it's the same old matches with the same spots every time. In Japan, BJW has tried to carry it on, and I do enjoy some of the guys like Nukazawa (sp?).
It's a shame to, because death matches used to be a little bit of a guilty pleasure for me, now it's a waste of time, that does nothing for me?
Dean, why'd you delete yourself? That was a quick re-entrance and re-exit.

I dont mind them, but I'm not a huge fan. Seeing one every once in a while is fine by me, but it isnt something I go out of my way to see.

I'm not a fan. No disrespect to any of the guys who work the death match style, but I find them really boring and repetitive. Same here, I respect the cats that wrestle those matches, but they don't entertain me most of the time. But from time to time I'll watch a match and love it.

I can't really say whether or not I enjoy deathmatch.
They can be fun to watch, I personally prefer not to cringe at guys doing things that take no skill just an improper threshold for pain.

Now, I certainly don't agree with Kid on his statements, just because someone is a fan of deathmatches, doesn't make them any less of a fan.
Hell, IWA's next Deathmatch is a NRBW match btween Whitmer and Jimmy Jacobs, who def. aren't considered "smashy" wrestlers.
...and I do think some wrestlers do indeed employ psychology into deathmatches and alot of deathmatch wrestlers, are indeed, good workers in regular matches.
The guys involved in deathmatches that I am fans of...in AMERICA....
Drake Younger and The Naptown Dragons, Necro Butcher, Joker, Brain Damage, Danny Havoc, Viking, Sexxxy Eddy, The Green Phantom, LuFisto, Corpral Robinson, Dysfunction, Mickie Knuckles, and several others I cant think of...
I know some won't agree, but I believe the majority of those workers maybe besides Havoc, I have seen put on great pure wrestling matches and use Psychology in their deathmatches. I mean, Drake/Brain Damage had a great, though never ending feud, and if you look back, the story told in their arry matches is very clear.
Also, my favorite NEWEST deathmatch wrestlers have to be.....Ultramantis Black & Shane Storm.

Meh, death matches don't entertain me that much. I don't think wrestling should be all about bloodying, injuring, maiming opponents. I also don't think it takes that much talent to be in a death match. How much talent does it take to smack someone with a light tube? Honestly, just doesn't appeal to me. I do enjoy a good brawl/hardcore match every now and then(e.g.:Briscoes/AOTF battles, Homicide/Cabana, A lot of Foley matches), but to constantly watch them, it's not appealing.

I think that deathmatches have been way too milked. I mean, if they had kept deathmatches like the WWE keeps the Hell in a Cell match, than maybe it would actually still mean something. Basically all the spots have been done, and that was all the deathmatch really had going for it.
With that aside, I enjoy hardcore matches (Tables, Ladders, Chairs) and think they can really enhance the creativity of the wrestler. The same can be said for the deathmatch, but that is not what we usually get. When we have guys like Freakshow and Mad Man Pondo sloppily falling around in barbwire and lightubes, I can't say I enjoy that.

Much like music, I go through phases with wrestling. Sometimes I only want to watch deathmatches...sometimes I can't stand em.

I love how people single out the deathmatch wrestling as "fat guys smashing each other with lightubes."
Ya know, sometimes that may be the case, but at the moment, the "thing to do" in deathmatches these days, is usually have high flyers and strong style guys work deathmatches. I mean, i've seen more spotty deathmatches than 'smashy' deathmatches this year.

Death Matches? he'z hardkor. great contribution to this thread... I kind of have to chuckle at this thread, that guys like Madman Pondo & Freakshow are getting crapon for being "fat guys that cut people" while at the same time people are putting over FMW, W*ING, and IWA Japan, with guys like Matsunga, Nakamaki, Mr. Pogo, and others essentially doing just that. I mark huge for all of them, but that's basicly what they did... There's a reason why Drake Younger goes to Germany, why the Naptown Dragons get booked for Chikara, JAPW, etc.. and it isn't because they just swing crapand jump into shit.. it's because they can WRESTLE. That is what's still on the marquee. Drake, Scotty, Dustin, xOMGx, Danny Havoc, Dysfunction, and others are bringing in a hybrid style of high flying and death match, mxiing in the weaponry with the indy style of fast paced matches, to create an amazing hybrid. The DM-High flying hybrid may be one of my favorite styles of wrestling to watch, period

My point, most of the "new deathmatch guys" like The Naptown Dragons, they started off as high flying "spotty" wrestlers, and hardly ever did deathmatches. They started doing them, and now they are getting booked all over the place....and they aren't just getting booked for deathmatches.
