This is a great day for Australian History, the Government finally says Sorry to the Indigenous community, while the Rudd Government won't be really giving out Money to help them out a bit I think now some of the Tension between the Indigenous community and the Government will be a bit toned down for a while. Is this the same as we Americans apologizing to the Indians?

Depends, the Apology is for how the Government around the mid 1900's took away Aboriginal Children from their Families and put them into Orphanages and so on, doubt there will ever really be an Apology for the Invasion of Australia as in my opinion the Country was better off having the British came down, and if they didn't someone else would have.

It was a good speech by Rudd, I prefer him more than Howard, it was great thing to do, knowone said anything for so many years.

My English teacher is from Australia and he spoke to us about it a few days ago. The Australian government isn't paying compensation right?
If not, I am kinda on the fence about it. If a mother and father of a child who dies in hospital after birth is payed compensation for mental injuries, then surely so can kids who were stolen from their home as a child and were sexually/physically abused. But on the other hand, the apology seems so token and forced.

Some guy managed to get around $750k in Compensation due to the treatment and long term damages he got from being taken away, While I do think its a Slap in the mouth to the Indigenous community for not getting Compensation, It would cost the Government Millions to pay each one out, Im thinking that they're just going to make the Community a much better place now by Spending alot more time and resources on it, Rudd has to live up to his Apology now by making the Indigenous community alot better than its ever been.

Seems a little stupid to me. I put it in the same category as those who claim America should apologize for slavery. There is no one around here who was directly harmed by slavery so it seems stupid to apologize for it. If there are still people around in Australia who were directly harmed by the government's policies than an apology is called for. Otherwise, it's stupid.

I believe the mistreatment of Aboriginals was up until as recently as the '70s.

I knew you would post this Ryuranger as this is actually relevant to you isnt it?
I was going to post it although saw you did. It is indeed a great day. Whilst as Rudd said, words are words, it is a step further. Whilst we could have done without Nelsons speech it was quite a remarkable event. It means so much to those who sufferred. It is a shame though that some things are still the way they are but at least today was a step forward in Australias history in recognising and building the bridge of unity with the inidgenous community.
Despite being a Howard supporter myself, I do think that all in all it was good today occurred.

I haven't read the whole thing, so I'm just going to go with a generic Australian response:

you may not care, but why do you post. australia owns you mate. He's doing it for the Lulz I don't really think this would be compared to if America apologized for taking Africans from their homeland for Slavery as It went on for way longer and alot more bad things happened than how the Aboriginals where treated, to me the Apology felt like a Move on from the past and to look at the Future, I really hope now that both sides can really move on and make a better tomorrow, although just saying Sorry still doesn't make up for the Suffering they got what does make up for it is to give them Compensation. Nelson was a f*cking Idiot and just in a short time of being the Opposition he gets bad rep for saying the most stupid thing on an Historic day.

I truly think Howard was a great PM and I miss him. Nelson is trashy also he looks like an alien. As for compensation, no not really. It doesnt exactly work how it is now. Not to stereotype but it does get wasted and is expensive. Rudds government instead is aiming money at building better facilities and so on to cater which i think is a better and more resourcful way to go about things.
