I really don't know what to make of this, it all happened so sudden.
I got a text from my ex-girlfriend at quater to four, basically 5 minutes after this all was first reported. I was in the process of reading it when I got a call from her as well, and she was crying and sounded like she was in a real panic. Up until this point I had heard nothing about it, and I talked to her for a solid ten minutes, just letting her explain to me what had happened. She was in Cole hall when it went down, and thankfully was able to make it out. She didn't see anything, but heard gunshots before her and a crowd of people got out of there.
Anyone that knows the campus real well, knows that Cole Hall is #31 on the map, she and a friend share a townhouse right next door to the auditorium where this happened, and that's #33. They're literally right next to each other. So she is (or I should say "was") on lockdown not more than 100 yards from the shooting.
Holy ****.

Police confirmed a 7th fatality
R.I.P.
And the gunman was a college grad (graduated from NIU a few years ago) who just came in the fire exit and started using a shotgun to shoot people.

Not sure why this is surprising everyone. Well these kind of things aren't as big as advertised. Another example of the media scaring people. Myth No. 10. “School violence is rampant.” It may seem so, with media attention focused on a spate of school shootings. In fact, school shootings are extremely rare. Even including the more common violence that is gang-related or dispute-related, only 12 to 20 homicides a year occur in the 100,000 schools in the U.S. In general, school assaults and other violence have dropped by nearly half in the past decade.

Not sure why this is surprising everyone. Its suprising to me because it is so close to home. When you see it on TV its one thing, but when it is at a campus I've regularly visited its surreal. On a happier note, I talked to most of my friends who attend NIU today, most of them came back home.
