Hey guys, I just applied for a job at my local Toys R' Us in Poughkeepsie, NY. I was wondering if any current/former employees on here can give me there thoughts on working there?
Thanks

I just got a job there like last week, and it's really really fun. I'm not sure what you're like, but I usually like helping kids, especially those that are grateful, so I have a nice time going out of my way to find something for them. As far as the company itself, it's pretty much like every other big retail chain out there, nothing special. I'm not really into them anymore, but I'm sure you can scout figures for yourself if you want. I'm sure you'll have fun if you get hired.

Yeah, you guys are both in there for the short run. Terrible time to accept employment at any retail chain.

Yeah, you guys are both in there for the short run. Terrible time to accept employment at any retail chain. Yeah thats my only concern, being dumped right after the holidays. Luckily I am looking to work there in ADDITION to my current job. I just got a job there like last week, and it's really really fun. Ive never worked in retail before so I really have no idea what to expect. Hell, I dont even know what they pay

Hell, I dont even know what they pay What to expect in retail: - Cocky managers who think they're successful hot ****s because they run the infants department.
- Irregular scheduling. Had last Friday off? Not this week.
- This time of year - crowds. Lots and lots of crowds.
- Complaints. Customers find one for everything - and yes, it is your fault.
- Yes, you will be reporting for work at 4 am the day after Thanksgiving. No, this is not negotiable.
- Getting dumped before the new year.

He's pretty much summed it all up right there. I wouldn't have even bothered taking the job if I didn't need it just for now. I'm still in high school, so it's not really a big deal that I'm getting dumped after Christmas. I had assumed you worked retail before, but since you haven't, you're pretty much in for a rude awakening. Retail sucks the big one, it's just TRU isn't as bad as some other chains, simply because helping people there may actually be fun.

Not every place dumps you after the Holiday Season. I started at Toys R Us in...like, November of 2002, and ended up staying the entire time until I quit...in February. I couldn't stand that place. But that was more of a management issue, as they were scheduling me when I was in school.
If anything, it'll just be really busy, especially around/on Black Friday, but nothing terrible. You won't necessarily go in at 4 am, when I worked there on Black Friday, I worked the afternoon shift. It's really not as terrible as everyone says it is, but if you stay in retail for too long, it'll drive you nuts. But it should be a job that'll keep you busy enough.

I applied for TRU back in October, got a call and went for an interview but they never hired me. It's probably for the better anyway as I need a job for more then two months.

When I was at TRU (last year), you got to choose if you wanted to work at 4 a.m. on Black Friday. But get ready to be miserable for the next few months. The whole time I worked there (three months) I never had one weekend off.

The whole time I worked there (three months) I never had one weekend off. Well I put down that I could work 7 days a week, anytime from 8am-2pm. My other job is everyday 3-930. Ive got no problem going in at 4am on Black Friday. Im really looking to bank money and when im not at work i kinda just sit around all day doing literally nothing (posting on here lol). So hopefully it all works out for the best. I also applied at BestBuy p.s. love your sig and avatar. Mickie James = teh sex

I worked at KB & was hired for a seasonal spot. I knew that there was a good chance it was only going to be for the season, but they will also consider keeping you on if you make it known to them you are a hard worker. I ended up being one of two people being kept & ended up working there for about 2 years. I will admit, working at this time of the year, at a toy store, will get difficult & very frustrating. I dont know about black friday at TRU, but at KB I worked at the register from 5am to 5 pm. It will be a really long day, so get a good night of sleep

I work the grave yard shift as an overnight stock clerk at my TRU in Newark. It's pretty cool, I get a good work-out lifting boxes, and I'm a pretty strong guy, so it's really nothing.

Change a few minor details, and you described Target and Blockbuster very well. Kudos.

At Target in 2003 I worked at 3am unloading the truck with the Flow Team, when we opened at 7am I went out to the floor and worked electronics until 5pm, which is when I took my first break, which was lunch, and then upon returning from that I was scooted to the back room to pull CAF's (restocking reports) until 10pm, where I was then scooted to put everything we just pulled out on the floor until we closed at either 11pm or 12, and then I ended up leaving at 1am, when I refused to work any longer, even though they kept telling me they really needed me to stay and clean the store. Yes, 22 hours is the longest I ever worked in a single day, and I made like $425 that day, and it still wasn't worth it, even though that was like 2 weeks pay at the time. retail. Never again.
