When the Ex and I were together we went and got a loan for a car. I was the main signer and she was the co-signer since then we've split up and now she's not paying on the car or is always late with the payments. Is there a way I can get off the loan? It's really screwing my credit up and I'm rarely ever late with my bills if at all.

The only way you can get off the loan is if she refinances the car into just her name. Other than that, you're screwed. You signed the papers so the loan is in your name. This is why you a) never co-sign for anyone for any reason and b) never borrow money period.

Thanks for the advice I'll look into this.

Either take the car yourself, or have her refinance it into her name

There are some other ways to get her name off the loan if you want to keep the car and/or have the car taken from her via the sheriff. As far as loan information you should check out my website for some loan information that might help you. Click the globe thing under my avatar. Oh FYI Mike Awesome passed away man.

Phone to the insurance to remobed her name off from the card? I think that is what UK do, if people spilt up or whatever. But not sure about USA.

As long as your name is on the loan papers, then you are liable for the loan regardless of who's name is on the title or who has the actual car. Worse case scenario she can disappear with the car and not make payments and you're stuck making payments on a car you don't have for a girl you never want to see again. I've seen it happen before sadly. As for borrowing money, I don't have a problem borrowing money on a house as long as you put down a good sized downpayment and end up owing less than the house is worth. That way you can sell the house in a hurry if you absolutely have to and recoup your cash. As for a car, I would never ever ever borrow money on a car. There's no reason to. You can save up the cash and buy a decent used car pretty cheap.
