So today, the NYPD was at my school for random metal detector scannings. They are basically looking for all cell phones, MP3 players and crap like that. They told us it was going to happen at random but hasnt been spoken of since october. Anyway, fast forward to today, i get there and there is a long ass line and i knew exactly what it was. So i head home. And now im home, under my warm covers.
I think its total bullcrapthat they dont let us keep our phones on us at all times. Cause if there is an emergency after school on the way home and one is by themself, then what. So this is my personal day off of protest.
Has anyone else gotten these random scannings at their school?

Wow you serious? I havent heard of that ever occurring here. That's harsh doing things like that. I understand that a kid may need the phone for an emergency and therefore it should be allowed but having police come in and do random scannings is just down right odd to me.

Cause if there is an emergency after school on the way home and one is by themself, then what. Then we do what we did for thousands of years before the mobile phone... we find out when we get home. Honestly, school's only do it because students already abused the privilege. You can't tell me that people in your class don't text message during lessons.

Yeah, my god, what are you going to do without your cell phone? Somehow, we managed to get by just fine without them. Personally, they should be banned from schools completely. I think we are all capable of going 8 hours without using the phone.

Nobody scans for cell phones or musical devices at my school. They only get confiscated if you have them in class and the teacher catches you using them.

I agree that cell phones should be banned from school, but it's insane that the NYPD is wasting their time doing the faculty's job for them. How is this a police issue at all?

They shouldn't be allowed in classes. At best they're distracting and at worst they're very distracting. It does seem odd that NYPD would be involved in it. Also, do you seriously think skipping school will prompt them to change their policies or are you just looking for an excuse to stay at home?

Also, do you seriously think skipping school will prompt them to change their policies or are you just looking for an excuse to stay at home? No, skipping school probably did nothing, but i was not waiting on a line, outside of my school, where the windchill made it feel like it was 5 degrees. Plus the line wrapped around my school. I actually know alot of people who went home to. Its not gonna do anything, but its really ridiculous. Cause if there is an emergency after school on the way home and one is by themself, then what. Then we do what we did for thousands of years before the mobile phone... we find out when we get home. Honestly, school's only do it because students already abused the privilege. You can't tell me that people in your class don't text message during lessons. Yes, kids abuse it all the time, but they should be confiscated on the spot. I dont see a problem with if a cell phone is on someone but not seen throughout the school day.

I'm probably in the minority of (somewhat) older users here when I say that I think students should be able to have their cell phones while at school.

Actually, I would like to retract my previous statement. I think that students should be able to have their phones at school, but if it rings or if the student is caught using the phone during class (in-between periods/passing time and lunch should be fine) then it should be taken.

I'd have no problem getting scanned, but I think there's no reason to confiscate cell phones.

Cell phones have no business in the classroom. I don't have a lot of problem with students using them on their own time (lunch, breaks, etc) as long as it's within reason. The shouldn't be in the classrooms for any reason though. Students should be required to at least leave them in their lockers between classes.

i think you should at least be able to bring mp3 players to listen to on the bus and stuff. nobody listens to them during class because it's so obvious.
