Part IV
WWF Wrestlemania Challenge
Released 1990
Format
NES
Here we go the biggest selling WWF game on the NES also happens to be arguable the best. Acclaim pretty much changed every single aspect of there first WWF title on the NES, and they gave us this far more ambitious title that really captured the feel of the WWF as well as any game had done on the NES.
Unique at the time to this game is the view as it is not side on it is at a angle. Your health bars are on the side of the ring which was a nice little touch. Graphically the sprites are somewhat smaller than what they did in the first Wrestlemania game. While you can tell who everybody is they do look a little bland. The arena itself looks excellent in fact the overall presentation of this game is 10 times better than the bland Wrestlemania we got a little while earlier. The sound is great and like the first Wrestlemania has the wrestlers theme tunes playing during matches.
For a 8 bit game the fact that there was a 10 man roster was very impressive in my personal opinion from when the game was released the roster really did have the best that the WWF had at the time you could argue perhaps the likes of Jake Roberts Dusty Rhodes and Demolition but the 9 superstars you could pick were all great choices. As well as the WWF Superstars there was another character called yourself where you could pretend it was yourself going for the WWF title or pretend it was a different wrestler.
Game modes were greatly expanded from the first title you could not only go for the WWF title but you had tag matches and Survivor Series bouts as well even though it was 3 on 3 it still was a great feature. The game play was really fast and while it was a button masher if you accidentally walked into a attack you could get your ass handed to you as sometimes the CPU could be really unforgiving especially when yo got up to Andre Hogan & Warrior. The Superstars all had there own little touches in the game which was great Rudes rude awakening in particular, but some signature moves were missing which was a bi of a let down especially if you were a Warrior fan.
Gameplay of Wrestlemania challenge I have always felt gets a raw deal as it was no doubt a pick up and play game but in multi player hell even sometimes against the later CPU opponents you had to develop a strategy. For example if you got into a situation where you got say 4 or moves done on you, you would have to run away and hope your opponent did not catch you it was almost like you were playing a game of tag until your energy started to fill. Does not sound like much by todays standards but it has held up very well and can be a very fun game still to this day to play.
