Tecmo World Wrestling 1990
Format
NES
Whenever I think of this game the one thing I always remember was that it let you do the scorpion death lock/sharpshooter which was so cool lol. Tecmo more famous on the NES for there American football game never really get the credit they deserve for this title. Something that always put me off as a kid was that it had no affiliation with WWF or WCW so I was not interested. Until the summer of 91 when a friend of mine had it told us all you could do the sharpshooter with this info I was sold. So much it was on my Xmas list for that year.
The game is a button masher make no mistake but what it has over the other NES wresting titles is the amount of moves that your guy can have all pretty cool ones as well like back suplexes pile drivers, not just body slams and drop kicks. In single player I am not going to lie I feel the lack of licensed wrestlers (you can edit there names) makes it less appealing and as all you can do is single matches it gets a bit tedious. In multi player however it is far better and kept me and my friends entertained for hours.
One thing I think helped was that we all called our wrestlers our own names for example I always went the guy who looked a bit like Animal and called him Thunder (I have no idea why I was 10 so give me a break). A great gameplay feature was the training you could do sit ups, squats and pushups they were a nice little touch that added something different.
One cool thing was the well known play by play this game has which is so funny due to the errors. As its a Jap game they obviously had to translate it but while they translated the words the way they were written so some of them were wird. Still this was a cool feature that WCW and WWF Challenge did not have.
Graphically the game looks decent for a nes game the superstars though considering they made em all up are pretty boring. They kind of resemble wrestlers from the 70's in there basic trunks and boots. Sound wise its not going to blow you away but at the same time you probably wont reach for the mute button.
In closing this is a game that I have fond memories from as a kid. I think to be honest you had to be a kid in the early 90's to appreciate it as if you were to have you first play of this now you would probably think it sucked. While it was not as good in my eyes as wrestlemania challenge or WCW when it came time for multi player with my buds it was this we played not the other 2. Also the cartridge that I own now is the same one as I got in Christmas of 1991 I have never got rid of it.
Graphics 6.5/10
Sound 6.5/10
Gameplay 8.5/10
Lifespan 8/10
Roster 3/10
