ratings are how many people watch the show & the amount charged to companies to run commercials on the show is dictated by how many people watch. which is why it costs like $10,000,000 for a 30 second superbowl ad & $1,000 for an ad during a re-run of fresh prince of belair on at 1 a.m. so, yes, ratings do equal advertising revenue. Except there's something a lot of people have either forgotten or didn't know to begin with... When WWE signed with NBC/Universal to produce exclusive programming for them, part of the agreement was that the network (ie: USA) would be paid the lion's share of television ad revenue. So, the ratings haven't mattered (monetarily) to the company for awhile now as they don't get any real payoff from it.
