This comes from Apparently, the WWE will finally be rolling out a major pay-per-view event in high-definition some 12 months after UFC did the same. According to a tipster, Time Warner Cable (partly owned by Time Warner, parent company of AOL, which owns Engadget) is gearing up to offer the WWE Royal Rumble PPV event in HD when it airs on January 27, 2008. Of course, this shouldn't be too surprising considering that WWE was already planning to switch Smackdown to HD next month, but for fans of the sport, we're sure they'll be delighted to have the PPV matches in 1080i, too. We'll let you know if we hear anything official.

I heard they didn't want to air anything in HD because it catches the wrestlers calling out spots.

12 months after UFC sure makes WWE look a little slack. Hopefully no problems come from this. I can imagine, we are waiting for the number 30 entry then boom the screen goes blank.

Botches in High Definition. Wow. And hearing Flair call out spots in High Definition.
I'd also be willing to bet HBK is going to start wearing hats A LOT more than usual once the shows are in HD.

Why are people making reference to Audio Quality? That's nothing to do with High Definition.
High Definition refers to the quality of the picture, it's just a convenience that it is coupled with something like Surround Sound.
Even then, WWE can drop the volume on the ringside cameras mics so they can cover it up.
The only thing I'm expecting is a load of bruised heads, because I won't be surprised if they get told to make the punches a little more convincing.

WWE won't have a problem with "hearing spots", well no more of a problem then they have now. I just hope Vince get's the same cameras that they use for the NFL network, because god damn that HD is good.

This'll be awesome.
Does anybody know that if RR was to air in HD, would the UK get it on the HD channels? I don't see why not, but I can imagine something going wrong and the UK not getting it for like another year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that prevent a lot of people from being able to watch it?
I'm not too up on this HD thing, but I know that in my house, none of us have HDTV's. I am the only one who has a DVR cable box (equipped with HD service), and so my TV can downscale and broadcast the HD channels in standard definition. However, the other TV's in my house have the older boxes and just display black screens on any HD channel.

I think it means you'll have the option to watch it in HD, so if you don't have it you could still watch it and if you do have HD, you have a choice. I still don't see what the big deal about HD is and I have one. * waits to get bashed*

And if that's the case, it doesn't seem like it's TRUE HD. If somebody would like to explain this whole thing, I'd greatly appreciate it. Again, I don't know a whole lot about HD.

very awesome, if it happens. the only problem i think looking at this as a fan is how much more are they gonna jack the service up for an HD broadcast. I mean as is, isnt a regular PPV $34.99? or is it $39.99? Doesnt matter, i betcha bottem dollar that its gonna raise the price. Im hoping, if they do it in HD, that thye release it on Blue-Ray cause i have a PS3 with a Blueray player, soo RELEASE IT ON BLUE RAY!!!

1. They haven't, this is merely a rumor. It's bound to happen sooner or later though. 2. I'm not really sure but I think it happened earlier this year.

If this is true, then I'll probably buy the Royal Rumble without any hesitation. I love HD.
