Discussing this with my brother the other day and it really is the truth.....
JBL owes his career to Brock Lesnar.
Brock Lesnar leaves after WMXX. Vince needs a new top heel for SD! to fill his void. Being that he was just screwed over by a person who was still a rookie in many senses, Vince decides he needs to go with someone who he knows won't walk away at some point down the road. He picked someone who showed loyalty to the company. That man was Bradshaw.
If Brock never left and stuck with the pro wrestling thing, I think it's a safe bet that there is no JBL. No WWE champion. No "wrestling God". No entertaining announcer. The only time we would have seen him was on WWE.com in the "Where Are They Now" files.
Do you think JBL thinks about the fact that his success was due to Brock Lesnar? Intentional or not, if I were JBL......I would've at least sent him a card over the holidays .
Dear Brock,
Thank you for my career and stuff.
- JBL

I'm just saying it because over the past few years JBL has become ridiculously over. He's got a spot with the company for life. All because of another guy. I doubt they would've considered the character if Lesnar stayed.

Lynch Lesnar!
I'm on team Joey Styles when it comes to JBL, I find his voice to be incredibly irritating and he was the main reason I didn't watch SD! When he debuted on RAW I had my back turned to the TV and was drawing and his music played for like 10 minutes.........god its so irritating.
Or maybe I just hate cowboys. I don't know.

You make an interesting point - but I think we would have seen a bradshaw push down the line anyways - considering he and vince are very close in real life. Its been reported that JBL and Vince have used the same private jet to go to many WWE events.

I agree and disagree on some points.
Would JBL become as big as he did as fast as he did if Brock was still with WWE ? Hells no.
Would the JBL character be created if Lesnar didn't leave ? I think so, yes. The JBL character is who he is. JBL is JBL. It's not really a character, it's him. So I think Vince thought that Bradshaw doing stuff with the stock market wouldn't really fit the Bradshaw character, so they created JBL.

It's sad that the WWE went from an exciting young star like Brock Lesnar to an old, overweight former-jobber like JBL.

It's sad that the WWE went from an exciting young star like Brock Lesnar to an old, overweight former-jobber like JBL. I too didn't care for the JBL character initially. Then when he became the SD! commentator I laughed at a few things he said about Michael Cole. At first I was like, "Hey! JBL's not that bad really". But then it hit me that my admiration for JBL was really just admiration towards anybody who made fun of Michael Cole. And, yes...... Brock > JBL Yes, Brock was pushed hard, but his fresh image and amazing skill made it easier to accept. JBL, on the other hand.. just take a LexLuger1993-esque push.... but with a heel.

Next you're gonna tell me, Punk should thank Benoit for the ECW title. Or Maybe Morrison should thank Mercury for getting injured at Armageddon 2006, that some how sent the former Johnny Nitro's stock up to be nothing short of a third tier-World Champion.

Well the fact that you not only opened this thread, but also donated the time to leave such an insightful comment leads me to believe that you cared just a little bit.

I think JBL's character would have come along regardless of Brock. I dont particularly care for him as an announcer, but his in ring mic skills are pretty damn intertaining.. lots of intensity there.never in a million years would I've picked a former APA,midcarder to head a company and be WORLD CHAMP. But thats why Vince is Vince. though he really needs to hit the gym.

I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter. ;D I cannot stand JBL. But unlike you, I actually changed the channel the whole time JBL was on RAW the other night. He is awful. He was champ for so long only so people who drew could face him for the title. He has to be carried in every match. He's lucky his sucks Vince's ass. And his commentary is brutally awful. He oversells EVERYTHING and is not entertaining at all. I don't look forward to having to miss Jericho stuff, but anytime JBL will be on RAW I will change the channel. Anyone remember when they tried to push him on RAW as an upper card guy and they put that song on WWE.com of him making fun of HHH to try to get a feud going and nothing ever came of it? Ugh, I can't stand him.

I will admit JBL can talk on the mic. Too bad it doesn't translate into decent commentary.
He also punched the blue meanie.
If that means anything..

There is no way of knowing exactly what a threda says before it's opened, but if you open it, that means you automatically care.

Someone tell me what the job of a heel is...
When you come up with that answer, you'll realize why JBL was successful champion. Did he get the spot just because Brock Lesnar left? Maybe he did, but does it really make a difference anyway? That's what this business is about, it's about making yourself into a star so you can make someone else into a star and draw money together.
JBL is the man and he entertained the s*** out of me when he was on top, hell he still does.

He was a guy they gave the belt to so the stars who could draw could chase for the belt. That doesn't make him a star. Show me any match that JBL was impressive in. No one can because he was carried in every match except when he fought Big Show because there were no ring generals in those.
