Simple enough question: What do you thing are some of the most underrated songs by some of the most popular artists?
My picks:
Bruce Springsteen - "Rosalita"
The Boss himself calls this the greatest love song he ever wrote. And yet, when his 18-track Greatest Hits album was released in 1995, it was conspicuously absent. And yet, "Secret Garden" was on the album. Ewwww. Anyway, the song doesn't get a lot of airplay, probably because it's 7 minutes long.
The Grateful Dead - "Throwing Stones"
First, let me start by saying that the entire "In the Dark" album was underrated. Not only was it the last studio album they recorded before Jerry died, it was also their only album to produce any music videos ("Touch of Grey" and "Hell in a Bucket"). "Throwing Stones" was a metaphor-laced look at the state of the world as we know it, addressing war, gang violence, race relations, economics, and other issues. Also accompanied by a jungle-ish steady drumbeat that even Meg White could keep up with.
The Kinks - "Hatred"
This little ditty was from the early 90s, and I guess it was easily forgettable...but it may very well be the ULTIMATE Kinks song. It's six minutes of Ray and Dave going back and forth about how much they hate each other. In mountain tempo.
Aaaaaaaaaaanyway...discuss.

Crash Test Dummies - Afternoons & Coffee Spoons
The second track off of "God Shuffled His Feet" blows the radio single out of the water. The energetic strumming pattern, clever harmonica work, and hook driven melody will get this one stuck in your head for days.
Billy Joel - The Downeaster Alexa
Billy Joel's crowning achievement, as far as I'm concerned. While "Piano Man", "We Didn't Start The Fire", and "River Of Dreams" are his top charting singles, this is easily one of his most powerful - a thunderous tribute to the disintegration of the fishing industry's success in Massachusetts.
John Lennon - Oh, Yoko!
Say what you want about Ono - this is THE drunken sing-a-long song, one of Lennon's most simple, and yet most catchy numbers - all driven by his love of the artistically deviant. My fiancee and I are cutting the cake to this song at our wedding.

I guess it was "kind of" a hit anyway.
But when you hear about The Rolling Stones you rarely hear anyone mention the song "Far Away Eyes". It's such a weird song for them in my opinion. I don't even really like them other than a few songs. But I really love "Far Away Eyes" for some reason.

I love Rosalita, although it gets a lot of air play here... probably because of the close proximity to Springsteen Country. I'd say if I was thinking of my favorite artists, and songs that don't get any/enough air play, I'd say:

It was a B-side to the Zephyr Song, imo its a really strong track and better then quite a few of the songs on By the Way.
