It can be traced as far back as the Holly-Bopper-Valens plane crash. Other notable dates are 12/8/80 (1980 is just a horrible year in general for music with the deaths of Lennon, Bonham, and Scott) and 4/27/94.
Out of the 3 dates mentioned I'd say Kurt Cobain's death was the final nail in the coffin as far as good music is concerned. 1995 was the last good year and anything the came afterward that was considered good was pretty much luck in my view.

If you honestly cant enjoy some form of music, past a certain date, you are an uptight prick.

If you honestly cant enjoy some form of music, past a certain date, you are an uptight prick. If that was directed towards myself then in my defense I will say that I do enjoy some music after 1995. Examples of this are Metallica's Load, Puddle of Mudd's Come Clean, and hell even D-12's single Purple Pills. I'm just saying that in my opinon most of the best music has already been written and can't be done again. That's all.

It's not dead. There's a lot of great stuff going on that's just under your nose because you don't know more than what's on TRL. Post Metal/Post Rock has been created and some amazing bands are arising such as Explosions in the Sky, Red Sparowes, and This Will Destroy You. Hardcore, thrash punk, and metal have all been spliced together an innovated with bands such as Coliseum, Black Elk, and the Doomriders. There's a new breed of music mixing everything from doom metal to black metal to indie rock with bands like Book of Black Earth, Giant Squid, and Cobra Noir. Plus the indie scene has been pumping out amazing artists lately, and, as always, Converge redefines music with every album.
Don't blame you're own laziness and narrow mindedness to the death of music.

I personally disagree somewhat but there were alot of great bands circa 1970.

I'd like to think it was the day "We Built This City" by Starship was turned into fodder for a lame rap song.

If anyone thinks music died, then they are guilty of the murder.

Friday Sept. 13, 1996. The day 2Pac died, is the day Rap music died. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of talented rappers out there, but they are being out shined by this new crap that comes out on the radio. Anyone who was around from the mid 90's that is still rapping the same is still good. Like Redman, Method Man, and a few others. Snoop Dogg sold out. (but he's still the sh*t)

I'd like to think it was the day "We Built This City" by Starship was turned into fodder for a lame rap song. We Built This City was already really really lame.. Dip Set just made it hard. Music aint dead anyway. Even as a hip hop fan who hates the state mainstream rap is in I still can find plenty of good hip hop. As for any other genre, I can't speak on it, because I don't listen to anything but hip hop.
