I'm not sure how the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight plays out, or how it ends, but I doubt that they killed off the Joker.
So with Ledger dead, this begs the question on what they will do about the Joker in future Batman films. Are they going to write him out? Just forget about him? I doubt it.
It looks like, sadly, this Batman movie franchise is going to have to follow the footsteps of the old movie franchise and cast a new actor to play a previously used character. So we'll be seeing a new actor play The Joker in the next Batman movie, following The Dark Knight.
What do you think?

I have no idea, but Ledger did sign on to reprise his role in a third one.

Just have him escape at the end, and always have that question mark of "he can come back anywhere, anytime, but will he?"
The answer, of course, is no. But it'll still be cool and deliciously metaphoric for him to be alive at film's end. Why kill Ledger off in his final film?

Ledger's Joker can be easily replaced. First of all, under the heavy make-up it didn't even look like Ledger. Second, if the concern is someone not looking the way Ledger did, you could explain this with Joker going through cosmetic surgery (perhaps to get rid of the smile scars for more of his psychotic grin look). Third, there are a ton of people who could do the role. The Joker is a famous character and while few may put forth the effort of Ledger into becoming the character, it isn't THAT difficult of a role. (If I looked more the part, I could play the Joker.)
And for the record, the character of Rachel Dawes has already been replaced, so this franchise is already following in the old one's footsteps. Let's just hope the writing doesn't also follow suit.

I don't think many more people could play The Joker like Ledger did, and thats just basing it on previews. Sure, any schmo can look like him, but thats not the problem. I think they will just let Joker escape, or send him to Arkham maybe. I don't think he will be back anymore in this series though.

I'm just sure he'll be locked up for good in a special wing of Arkham. You're working under the assumption that the Nolan, Bale, and the franchise is going to go on long enough to where they're going to have to recycle enemies. We've got Two-Face coming up. For all we know, the next movie could end up being the last.

i read somewhere that Jokers role in the third film was going to be a small one, in which he would help Batman catch Dent from prison a la "silence of the lambs", i honestly hope they do not recast the Joker as he was Ledgers and Nolans creation. sure someone could study Heaths performance and basically do an imitation for the next film but i truthfully dont think Nolan would be up for it, heres to hoping theres even a third film.

Why not go the route of the comic books. Joker is caught, Harvey Dent becomes Two Face, and then proceeds to let all the inmates out of Arkham again.

I honestly don't think they'll recast the part of The Joker. I wouldn't mind, but I don't think they will. However, if they were to recast him I could easily see Ryan Gossling or Johnny Depp taking on the role as both are great actors and have a Joker like look to them.

It's one of those situations where you're screwed if you do and you're screwed if you dont. Heather Ledger made this role his own and it's a shame we'll never get to see him play the part again now. It would be possible to recast him, but would there be a huge fanboy backlash? Will they even recast him if they make another one? Who knows? People do love the Joker and no matter what, they're gonna wanna see him again in the Batman films.

i hope they go with the "escape" thing, to where he could come back, but doesnt. I think the next mvoie should focus on Two Face, maybe introduce Penguin, Clayface or Riddler

Jack Nicholas said he was furious he didn't get offered the part for the Dark Night, so why not cast him for the third one?

I love how people are already determaining the quality of Ledger's performance when all you have is the trailer and 6 mins of the movie to go off of. How about we just sit back and enjoy the work he has done instead of thinking who would be best to replace him.

Lol, could you imagine... he was outstanding for the type of Joker he played, but i don't think he'd be too great at this type of Joker (however, if i remember right, eeryone though Heath Ledger was an awful choice when he was first picked)

The Joker NEVER dies !
I remember an old issue where Clown Prince of Crime was stabbed and appeared mortally wounded yet he still returned to terrorize GC yet again....

I think Johnny Depp would be fantastic in the role.
