Ok, so I noticed this while watching the movie again.
The Movie lists that Kentucky, Maine, Nevada, and Ohio borders the state Springfield is located in.....
So I also noticed, Kentucky starts with a K, Maine starts with an M, Nevada=N, Ohio=O...
In the Alphabet, Its K-L-M-N-O, but obviously, you have four of Five in the order.... Therefore, the "L" State would be what all the other lettered states are Bordering which could be none other than Louisianna?

When they went to florida, didnt they come back and had a map of states they werent allowed in anymore... and south dakota was the only one left? |

Springfield,IL is the one I have always placed them in. Not sure why.

Matt Groening use to live just a few block from where I do in NW Portland. Many of the street names were used as characters names in the cartoon.
Flanders, Lovejoy, Kearney and Quimby.
There is a Springfield here in Oregon, however I don't think it's really supposed to be anywhere. It's supposed to be the All-American generic town and Springfield represents that town for it's in probably in a quarter of states.

I believe that it could be in Illinois. Think back to the episode when they changed the area code, when they were all pissed because the rich people got to keep the original area code and the poorer areas got the new one. That was a real incident in both Missouri and Illinois. There was also an episode (could be the same one, I can't remember) where Lisa looked out her window and sees the Mississippi River and the arch (in that order), which is what you would see when looking from from IL.

It was revealed in the Behind the Laughter episode that they were from Kentucky, but I think that was just a joke for that episode. It's probably set in no particular area since, like said in this thread, there's a Springfield practically in every state it seems.

I noticed that for virtually no reason in the movie Marge points out Seattle when they are on the train and it has about 5 seconds before that guy walks underneath the Seattle sign...

I remember there used to be an article on Wikipedia stating the few locations in the United States could be, however because of that Map of the USA that showed where the Simpsons were allowed to visit, it actually effectively eliminated all mainland states from being the home of Springfield... The United States locations that Springfield could be located is like Hawaii and Puerto Rico... I wish I could find where it went on Wikipedia however it looks like all evidence of it have been erased so people are probably thinking that I'm talking out of my ass...
