May 7, 1996 Commentators: Vince McMahon and Jim RossThe WWF ChampionRaw opens with the music of Shawn Michaels and the WWF Champion strutting down to the ring to a roar from the crowd.HBK: You know, everyone has been wondering why I would challenge a guy like Diesel to a cage match for my WWF Title. People seem to be wondering if I’ve bitten off more than I can chew this time. Well I’ve got news for ya, that’s a question I’ve been asked a thousand times in my career and every time I’ve proven all of them wrong! That fact is, Diesel started this, but I’m gonna finish it. I’m a fighting champion, and I don’t care who it is that I have to defend this title against. It can be a so called legend like Bret Hart, a seven foot monster like Diesel, it could be Joe Schmo off the street corner! The fact remains that I will always do what I have to do, and whether my title reign lasts a year or just a few more weeks, you can be sure that I’m gonna go down fighting and if I have ot go down in a blaze, Big Daddy Cool, I’m going down in a blaze of glory! (91%)The Godwinns defeated The Bushwhackers after Henry gave Butch a Slop DropThe Godwinns’ new attitude was on display, using a very aggressive style to pummel the Bushwhackers. In the end, Henry locked Butch in the Slop Drop and pinned him for the three. After the bell, the Godwinns went to the outside and grabbed steel chairs. It looked like the Godwinns were going to continue their assault on the Bushwhackers when Billy and Bart, the Smoking Gunns, came sprinting to the ring and cut the Godwinns off. Billy and Bart hit the Godwinns with right hands and then dumped them over the top rope and to the floor outside. The Gunns and Godwinns exchanged words and finger points as the Godwinns backed up the aisle. (73%)“Wildman” Marc Mero defeated Rad Radford with the Wild ThingMero made his in-ring return to Raw with a nice victory over Radford, dropping him with a samoan drop before hitting the Wild Thing for the win. As Mero celebrated his win, Hunter Hearst-Helmsley came sliding into the ring and tried to ambush Mero from behind, but Mero caught him coming in and blocked a right hand before blasting Hunter with a series of rights of his own and then taking him out of the ring with a dropkick. Mero looks ready for Hunter’s challenge at Retribution, foiling Hunter’s attempt at drawing first blood. (67%)It’s TimeWe now go to the backstage area where Vader has apparently cornered Todd Pettengill.Todd: Apparently Vader has something to say here tonight… Vader grabs the mic.Vader: Give me that, little man! I do have something to say and that’s this to the Undertaker. Undertaker, what happened last week will not soon be forgotten, but if you think for one second it’s gonna stop me from coming after you, you’re dead wrong! Tonight, I’m gonna hurt you, Undertaker. But I’m gonna hurt you in a way that no one has hurt you before. And then at Retribution, the Phenom will finally be laid to rest and it will be Vader Time! (81%)Ahmed Johnson and Jake “The Snake” Roberts defeated Goldust w/Marlena and Steve Austin w/Ted Dibiase when Goldust and Austin turned on each otherThis was a nice match up, and Austin and Goldust made a strange yet effective team. However, their team started to come apart when Goldust was holding on to Jake for Austin to strike, but Roberts moved out of the way of a clothesline and Austin collided with Goldust, sending him to the outside. Jake inched over to his corner and tagged in Ahmed as Goldust got back on the apron. He and Austin had a heated exchange and Goldust gave Austin a thrust to the throat! Austin staggered backwards into the grasp of Ahmed, who then planted Austin with the Pearl River Plunge for the win while Goldust left up the aisle and left his partner in the ring. (83%)Handicap ChallengeOwen Hart and British Bulldog now head to the ring.Owen: Over the past couple of weeks, the Ultimate Warrior has become a pain in the sides of myself and the Bulldog. Predictably, the Warrior couldn’t accept the fact that I beat him at In Your House, was crowned the Ultimate Champion of the WWF, and wouldn’t step aside and give me the respect that I deserve. But being the champion that I am, I am offering the Warrior one more shot at me. If you want to get your hands on me so bad, Warrior, then we have a challenge for you. At Retribution, if you have the guts, you take on myself and the British Bulldog in a two on one handicap match! And if you accept our challenge, you can bet that with our combined force, the Warrior will be stomped out of the WWF for good. Almost immediately the Warrior appears from the curtain with a microphone.Warrior: I ACCEPT!! The crowd cheers and then the Warrior rushes the ring. Owen and Bulldog try to cut him off, but Warrior fights up to his fight and blasts both men with right hands and then takes them down with a double clothesline! Owen and Bulldog roll out of the ring and head back up the aisle, opting to save it for Retribution, but the Warrior is obviously not intimidated by the two on one advantage.(80%)Number One Contender’s MatchWe now go to WWF President Gorilla Monsoon, who apparently has an announcement to make concerning the Intercontinental Championship.Gorilla: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is obvious that in the past few weeks the issues between Intercontinental Champion Goldust and Ahmed Johnson, and for that matter Steve Austin as well, have not been resolved. Therefore, I am making a match for next week her on Raw that will pit Ahmed Johnson against Steve Austin, with the winner facing Goldust for the Intercontinental Championship at In Your House: Retribution. Thank you, and enjoy the rest of the night. (72%)PaybackAs we were preparing for our next match, Vader suddenly appeared from behind the curtain, and was dragging someone behind him. It’s Paul Bearer! Vader threw Bearer into the ring, and as Bearer cowered in the corner, avalanched him in the turnbuckle. Vader then took Bearer’s limp body into position, scaled the middle rope, and landed on Paul with a huge Vader Bomb! Vader posed in the ring, calling out the Undertaker’s name as Bearer laid motionless on the mat. Vader has repaid the favor from last week when Undertaker apparently took out Jim Cornette. (74%) Vader lost overness from the segmentDiesel defeated Yokozuna with the use of brass knucklesShawn Michaels came down at the start of the match to do commentary. Diesel seemed to be a bit overwhelmed by Yokozuna’s power early in the match. When Diesel was taken to the outside by a side kick, Diesel locked stares with HBK and shoved Michaels in the face out of frustration. This brought Michaels onto the apron as Diesel got back in the ring, but the referee held him back. With the referee distracted, Diesel took the opportunity to give Yoko a low blow, then pulled a pair of brass knuckles out of his tights and blasted Yoko in the head! Diesel covered and motioned for the ref, who slid over and counted the three. As soon as the bell rang, Michaels got in the ring and started hitting Diesel with right hands. But HBK hadn’t realized Diesel still had the brass knucks on his hand, and Diesel soon blocked a right hand and knocked HBK unconscious with a loaded punch. With Michaels out of commission, Diesel lifted him up and drove him to the mat with a Jacknife for good measure. Raw came to a close with the crowd booing and Diesel standing over the body of the WWF Champion. (81%)

Really solid RAW, the tag match was great and your main event angles are going strong, and this next one looks great. HBK's gonna look TINY in that main event, haha.

May 14, 1996 Commentators: Vince McMahon and Jim RossHenry Godwinn versus Billy Gunn ended in a no contestTwo halves of their respective teams competed in this match, but it didn’t stay one on one for long. Bart and Phineas accompanied their partners to ringside, and soon after PIG tried to interfere on behalf of Henry, Bart confronted him and both men ended up in the ring brawling, leading to a no contest. All four men went at it until officials came down to the ring and finally separated the two teams. (73%)Champion AwaitsWe now go to the backstage promo area where Intercontinental Champion Goldust is standing by, along with Marlena.Goldust: Can you believe it? Can you believe all the fuss that’s being made over little old me? You must like me, you really like me! Yes it seems that I have become somewhat of an obsession for our friends Ahmed Johnson and Steve Austin. I’ve gotten under their skin, and now I crawl in their veins like a parasite, all in the name of gold. Now tonight, these two gladiators enter the arena for combat for the chance to meet the king and take his throne. And the beauty of it all, is that as king, I get to sit back and watch these two peasants tear each other apart, and then wait to dispose of what remains at Retribution. So put it all on the line, tonight, boys, because no matter what happens tonight, the sun will come out tomorrow. And when it does, you will arise to meet the king. And when you do, you will leave with nothing left to show for it except for battle scars and a memory. A memory that you will never forget the name of…(inhaling)…..Goldust! (76%)Jeff Jarrett defeated “Wildman” Marc Mero after interference from Hunter Hearst-HelmsleyThis was a very competitive match. Mero and Jarrett went back and forth, but it seemed Mero was getting the upper hand late in the match. Hunter Hearst-Helmsley then appeared at ringside, but Mero cut him off by surprisingly taking a suicide dive through the ropes and on to Hunter on the outside! With Hunter down, Mero got back on the apron, but was met with a thumb to the eye from Jarrett. The referee pushed Jarrett away from the ropes, and with the ref distracted, a recovered Helmsley pulled Mero off the apron and threw him head first into the steel ring post. Hunter rolled Mero back in the ring, and Jarrett quickly took advantage, hitting Mero with the Chartbuster and covering him for the win. Mero lay in the ring holding his head while Hunter backed up the aisle with a smirk on his face. (81%)Digging Your Own GraveWe now go to a dark backstage area where the Undertaker is standing by.Undertaker: The night grows cold, and the creatures of the night wait in anticipation. And you, Vader, are the one they want. You have become the latest to step away from the light and dare challenge the darkness. You have challenged a world you do not know, and it is only natural to fear what you do not understand. If there is no force of this world that can stop you, then it tips in my favor to not be of this world. Not of the world you know, and not of the world you claim to dominate. Soon you will understand. Wounds heal, bodies recover, but there is no remedy for losing your soul. Vader, tonight it begins. And at Retribution, for you it ends. Rest in peace. (89%)Ahmed Johnson and Steve Austin w/Ted Dibiase went to a time limit drawThe winner of this match was to get an IC title shot at Retribution. This was an all out brawl, with both men hitting power moves and scoring near falls. Both men were spent physically, but out of nowhere, Johnson hit a big spine buster on Austin. Ahmed then set him up and planted him with the Pearl River Plunge! It looked like Ahmed might finally end the match, but once the referee’s hand struck the mat once, the bell rang. Ahmed and the referee both looked a bit confused, but the referee conferred with the time keeper and announced that the time limit on the match had expired! The crowd was not happy with this outcome, and obviously neither was Johnson, who stood in the ring visibly upset and yelling at the referee. (83%)Owen Hart defeated Bob HollyBefore this match got started, Owen got on the mic and said that tonight was a special night and a huge opportunity for his opponent, because as a fighting champion, he was putting his Ultimate Champion title on the line, revealing a new trophy he had brought to the ring with him and inviting his opponent down to the ring. His opponent tonight was Bob Holly. Holly put up a nice effort, and even gained some momentum and looked like he might pull the upset. But Holly went high risk, looking for a drop kick from the top rope, but Owen caught him coming in and quickly turned him over into the Sharpshooter! After a few moments, Holly had no choice but to submit and Owen retained his title. (76%)Ready for ActionAs Owen celebrated his win and paraded around with his trophy, the Ultimate Warrior sprinted down the aisle and slid in the ring. Warrior pounded Owen with right hands and whipped him off the ropes for a clothesline. Warrior lifted Hart up in the air in a gorilla press, but before slamming him to the mat, the British Bulldog came to the ring and attacked Warrior from behind. Hart dropped to the mat and quickly rolled out of the ring as Bulldog and Warrior traded blows. Warrior soon gained the advantage, but rather than fight, Bulldog escaped through the ropes to the outside as well, and he and Owen backed up the aisle as Warrior stood tall in the ring. (80%)Triple Threat at RetributionWe now go to WWF President Gorilla Monsoon who apparently has an announcement regarding Retribution.Gorilla: Good evening. As we all saw tonight, the match between Ahmed Johnson and Steve Austin tonight that was to determine a number one contender to the Intercontinental Title went to a time limit draw and no winner was decided. However, it is my opinion that, through their efforts tonight, both men are well deserving of a title shot. Therefore, it is my decision that at In Your House: Retribution, Goldust will defend the Intercontinental Title against Steve Austin and Ahmed Johnson in a triple threat match. Thank you and enjoy the rest of the night. (83%)Diesel and Vader defeated Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker when Diesel used a chair and pinned MichaelsThis was a brawl from the beginning. During the match it seemed that neither of the team members would get their hands on their Retribution opponents. But soon it broke down into a four man brawl, with Taker and Vader and HBK and Diesel pairing off to the delight of the crowd. Diesel caught a dropkick and fell through the ropes on the far side of the ring as Taker and Vader traded blows and an Undertaker clothesline took both men over the top rope and outside on the other side of the ring. Vader tried to dismantle the ring steps and use them on Taker, but the referee stepped in between them to stop him until Undertaker clobbered Vader in the face with a big boot. With the referee distracted, Diesel stood with his back to the ring apron and grabbed steel chair, hiding it below the apron. Michaels leaned through the ropes and grabbed Diesel by the head to bring him back in the ring, but Diesel swung the chair up and blasted HBK in the head with the chair! HBK fell back on the mat as Diesel disposed of the weapon and slid back in the ring. Diesel then lifted HBK up and planted him with the Jacknife! Diesel covered as the referee slid back in the ring and counted the three. Diesel has pinned the WWF Champion, and celebrated his win as Raw came to a close. (88%)

May 20, 1996 Commentators: Vince McMahon and Jim RossThe Godwinns and The Bodydonnas w/Sunny defeated The Smoking Gunns, Marty Jannetty, and HakushiA nice 8-man tag match to open Raw. The action went back and forth, and in the end the Gunns and Godwinns squared off as the Bodydonnas and Marty and Hakushi brawled on the floor. Henry then scored the pin after rolling up Bart and using the tights for leverage. (63%)Ready to RumbleThe camera suddenly cuts to the backstage area where we see Marc Mero walking down the arena halls when Hunter Hearst-Helmsley came from behind and attacked him. The two men began to trade punches and brawl in the hall before officials rushed to the scene and separated the two men. The two rivals talked trash at each other while being held back, and it’s obvious that issues are at a boiling point heading into tonight’s 6-man tag match and this Sunday’s Retribution. (85%)Ahmed Johnson defeated Crush and Jeff Jarrett in a Triple Threat MatchIn preparation for his triple threat match at Retribution, Johnson took on Crush and Jarrett on Raw. Jarrett and Crush seemed to work together and focus on taking out Ahmed, but Johnson fought back, and after throwing Jarrett out of the ring, caught Crush with a spinebuster and then delivered the Pearl River Plunge for the win. (68%)Unlikely DuoAs Ahmed celebrated in the ring, Goldust and Steve Austin suddenly hit the ring and attacked Johnson from behind. Austin and the Intercontinental Champion put the boots to Ahmed on the canvas before Austin have Ahmed Stunner, and then Goldust added to the damage by hitting him with the Curtain Call. Austin and Goldust will be opponents in six days, but tonight they have put that aside and both taken out Ahmed Johnson. (78%)Vader TimeWe now go to the interview area where Todd Pettengill is with the man they call Vader.Todd: I’m here with Vader, who this Sunday at Retribution will go one on one with the Undertaker in a No Holds Barred match. Is it possible you might have gotten more than you bargained for this Sunday? Vader: Are you kidding me? I am the man they call Vader! I am the real phenom of the WWF. Undertaker, I’ve proven that I’m not intimidated by you. You’ve run over all comers in the WWF in your career, but I’m no ordinary man. I’ve looked you dead in the eye and not blinked and I’ve hurt you in ways that no one has done before. I’ve hurt you physically, and two weeks ago I took out Paul Bearer. And you might have taken out James Cornette in return, but that’s the reaction I wanted, Undertaker. I made you mortal. I hurt you in that dark heart of yours, and no one has done that before. And I’m glad Gorilla Monsoon has made our match no holds barred, because you will become even more mortal at Retribution. You will hurt, you will bleed, your bones will break, and everyone will witness the demise of the Undertaker! (79%)Owen Hart defeated Savio Vega with the SharpshooterHart again put his “Ultimate Championship” on the line, this time against Vega. Vega put up a tough fight and had the advantage early in the match. Hart soon turned the tide with his quickness and wrestling ability. In the end, Vega went for a spin wheel kick, but Hart caught his leg as they fell to the mat and was able to lock in the Sharpshooter on the mat and then turn Vega over and make his submit for the win. (70%)The Undertaker, Ultimate Warrior, and Marc Mero defeated Hunter Hearst-Helmsley, British Bulldog, and VaderThis match was full of big names and was a crowd pleaser for sure. The match progressed and soon broke down into a six man brawl in the ring. Vader and Bulldog were soon put over the top rope and to the floor by Undertaker and Warrior, and left Helmsley in the ring brawling with Mero. Hunter soon turned around and realized he was now surrounded by Mero, Warrior, and Undertaker. Helmsley tried to back off, but was hit with a right hand by Mero, turned into a right hand by Warrior, and then was caught in a goozle by the Undertaker and planted on the mat with a chokeslam! Vader and Bulldog decided to leave their partner in the ring as Undertaker covered Helmsley for the win. (74%)Contract SigningA table and two chairs were then set up in the ring, and Vince McMahon introduced the challenger, Diesel, and then the WWF Champion Shawn Michaels. McMahon reminded us that this contract signing was for a Steel Cage match for the WWF Championship at Retribution this Sunday. Diesel was the first to sign, followed by Michaels, making it official. Diesel and Michaels stood to their feet and started to talk a little trash. Diesel then suddenly smacked HBK in the face! Michaels turned away for a moment, then leaped over the table and began pounding Diesel with right hands! Diesel fought back and delivered a knee to the gut of Michaels. Diesel then grabbed a chair and blasted HBK in the head with it! HBK was out on the mat, but Diesel wasn’t done yet. Big Daddy Cool lifted Michaels up and gave him a Jacknife through the contract signing table! Michaels may be broken in half! Diesel stands proudly in the ring, and for the third week in a row Diesel has left the WWF Champion lying, and this time only six days away from Retribution. (94%)

Great diary. Really looking forward to IYH. Hoping the Warrior wins his handicap match then perhaps get a push towards some gold (IC Champion sounds pretty good).
I also love the Monday Nitro Updates.

Retribution May 26, 1996 Commentators: Vince McMahon and Jim RossThe Smoking Gunns defeated The Godwinns with the SidewinderThese two teams have been building a heated rivalry. The Godwinns took control early with their strength and brawling, but the Gunns fought back. In the end, the match erupted into a four man brawl, but after taking Henry off the apron and to the floor with a double drop kick, the Gunns set up Phineas and connected with the Sidewinder for the win. (81%)Will the WWF be Running on Diesel Power? We now go back to the interview area where Todd Pettengill is with Diesel.Todd: I’m here with Big Daddy Cool, Diesel, who later on tonight will step inside a steel cage with Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship. Diesel: That’s right, Todd, in just a few short minutes the uncrowned king takes his thrown. Michaels, you know and I know that the WWF Title belongs around my waist. Three weeks ago I left you lying in a heap in the ring. Two weeks ago, I pinned you 1-2-3 in the middle of the ring. And last Monday, I almost broke you in half when I Jackinfed you through a table. The lesson to be learned is easy, Shawn. You can’t beat me! Last time was a fluke, but this time it’s personal. You asked for this, Shawn, and tonight you’re gonna get it. I’m not out just for the WWF Title. I’m out to hurt you! I’m out to break you, I’m out to maim you, and I’m out to end your career! You’ve bitten off more than you can chew my man, and tonight the WWF Title comes home to Big Daddy Cool. (95%)“Wildman” Marc Mero defeated Hunter Hearst-Helmsley to retain the services of SableMero and Hunter went at it right from the bell. Hunter zeroed in on Mero’s head, trying to take advantage of the minor concussion Mero suffered the last time these two met. Towards the climax of the match, Mero reversed an irish whip and the referee was accidentally caught in a collision with Helmsley. With the ref down, Hunter hit a low blow to Mero that sent him to the mat. Hunter then went to the outside and grabbed his walking cane from the time keeper and brought it into the ring. Hunter set up in the corner and was ready to blast Mero with the cane, but suddenly the crowd roared as Sable ran down the aisle! Sable jumped on the apron and grabbed the cane from Hunter. Helmsley confronted her, but Sable then slapped Hunter across the face! Shocked, Hunter allowed himself to be rolled up and Mero got the three. Mero and Sable embraced and celebrated in the ring as Hunter looked on from the outside in disbelief. (86%)Steve Austin w/Ted Dibiase defeated Goldust w/Marlena and Ahmed Johnson to become the NEW Intercontinental ChampionThis was an interesting grouping of individuals. Austin and Goldust double teamed Ahmed early on, but when each man tried to get the pinfall for themselves, that partnership broke down quickly. As the match reached an end, Austin had been knocked to the outside, leaving Ahmed and Goldust in the ring. Ahmed was able to escape a Curtain Call attempt and nailed Goldust with a spine buster. It looked like Johnson might finish off the champ when Marlena got up on the apron. Ahmed went to confront her, and the vivacious vixen blew cigar smoke in Ahmed’s eyes! With Johnson temporarily blinded, Goldust came from behind and gave him a knee to the back, sending Ahmed through the ropes and out on the floor. Austin took the opportunity to sneak back into the ring, and as Goldust turned around, Austin caught him with the Stunner! A three count later and we had a new Intercontinental Champion. (78%)Won’t Back DownWe now go to the interview area with Todd Pettengill and Shawn Michaels.Todd: I’m here with the WWF Champion, the Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels, and Shawn I have to believe you heard Diesel’s comments earlier tonight. Your thoughts before your WWF Title defense? HBK: I heard everything that Diesel had to say. The fact is, all Diesel has done lately is talk. I took him down once, but it wasn’t enough for him. So he’s right when he says that this thing is personal. That’s why I asked for a steel cage match. And you know, everyone has been asking me why. Why would you want to take on a seven foot monster inside a steel cage? It’s not your style. I got news for ya, my style is whatever I want it to be! First people told me a sixty minute Iron Man Match wasn’t my style, but we all saw what happened there. Now a steel cage match isn’t my style? I’ve made a habit of proving people wrong, and tonight will be no different. Diesel, you better be ready for the fight of your life! (92%)The Undertaker w/Paul Bearer defeated Vader w/Jim Cornette in a No Holds Barred MatchThese two men brawled all over the ringside area and up and down the aisle. Vader took it to the Undertaker and scored near falls with a belly to belly suplex and even a powerbomb, but the Phenom wouldn’t stay down. Vader brought a chair into the ring and laid it flat, looking to powerbomb Undertaker onto the steel. However, Taker blocked the move and back dropped Vader to the mat. Undertaker went to the outside and grabbed the ring steps, blasting Vader in the face with them! Undertaker then chokelsammed the Mastodon and covered him, but Vader kicked out! Undertaker seemed to be in a bit of disbelief. Taker then picked Vader up to his feet and actually got the big man in position for the Tombstone. Undertaker held Vader in position before finally piledriving Vader head first onto the steel chair. This time it was enough to keep the Mastodon down, and Undertaker scored the three. (92%) Undertaker lost overness from this feud ending Vader lost overness from this feud endingUltimate Warrior defeated Owen Hart and British Bulldog in a Handicap MatchHart and Bulldog used quick tags to try and keep the Warrior down. They controlled most of the match until Warrior began to make his comeback. Warrior started to gain the momentum, hitting both men with clotheslines and body slams. In the end, not even the combined force of Hart and Bulldog could stop the Ultimate One. Warrior picked Owen up and gorilla press slammed him to the canvas, then did the same to Bulldog and dropped him on top of his brother in law. Warrior then hit the ropes and hit both men with a body splash to score the simultaneous three count. (84%) Owen Hart lost overness from this matchShawn Michaels defeated Diesel in a Steel Cage Match to RETAIN the WWF ChampionshipThis was a war from the beginning. Both men went at it, holding nothing back and using the cage itself to their advantage when they could. Diesel dominated the early part of the match with his power. Michaels fought back, out quicking the challenger and striking fast. Diesel regained control, however, and it looked like his power might be too much to overcome. Diesel looked to put HBK away, positioning Michaels on the apron in between the ring ropes and the steel cage. Diesel looked like he was about to give HBK a boot to the face, smashing it against the cage bars, but Michaels ducked and Diesel’s foot went through the bars of the cage. Diesel’s foot is stuck! HBK then tuned up and blasted Diesel with Sweet Chin Music! Diesel slumped down and was now hanging upside down by his foot in the cage, unconscious, and this allowed Michaels to step defiantly out of the cage door and down to the floor to retain his title. The crowd erupted in cheers and HBK celebrated with his Kliq and his WWF Title as Retribution came to an end. (91%) The WWF World Title gained in image

Another really good well written out show. Glad Michaels retained and am looking forward to seeing who his next challenger is. Not too glad that Warrior defeated Hart & Bulldog but hope it leads to Bulldog & Owen feuding. Glad Taker, Ringmaster & Mero won their respective matches, this diary continues to impress.
