I want to buy this because it looks amazing. But I'm not a major fan for comics and graphic novels. I know some but I'm not what people would consider an "ultra" fan. So will I be confused as hell by this story?
I kind of know that there are multiple worlds and all that. But will I need an understanding of most of the characters or can I learn as I'm going?

It's pretty confusing at times, and older comics were a lot "wordier" when Infinite Earths was written. But, you shouldn't have much trouble getting the gist of it.

It helps a lot with understanding the Infinite Crisis stuff. Plus the story's great.

I would read crisis on infinite Earths first. I am mostly a batman fan and stick inside the batman universe and do read much else like superman and wonderwoman. So i tend to get confused with those characters problems. Having read Infinite Earths first, however, Infinite Crisis made a lot of sense, so I would find that at your library and go from there.

Crisis on Infinite Earths is an impotrtant story. It's not a particularly good one though. It was written to to clean up the DC Universe, not to tell a good story.

A side question: what graphic novels of Batman would be crucial to get? Crucial story wise or do you just want REALLY good Batman stories? If its the latter I'd say first and foremost get Batman: The Killing Joke; following that get Dark Knight Returns by Mr. Frank Miller. Following that uhh...I forget the rest of the really good Batman arcs/stories that have been collected in TPB form. I'd reccomend some of the late 70s early 80s stuff, debut of Ra's Al Ghul stuff by Denny O' Neil or by Neal Adams. thats the stuff thats not campy batman but it also hasn't becom i'm over mad at the world batman yet. the current arc running through both detective and the batman monthly is astounding, reinventing bats from what he's been for the last years; written by james robinson, its called face the face and if i'm not mistaken the most recent issue was part 5, with issue 6 following close behind in approximately 2 weeks (running through two titles results in the arc essentially being bi-monthly). if you're interested in batman as a whole check out the complete series on 4 volumes all of which are currently available at your nearest and dearest DVD retailer, and depending on your location they should run you between $30 and $35 a set, with each volume clocking in at an approximate 24 episodes per, give or take a few. i'd consider this one of the best cartoons ever; homages to writers/creators, amazing writing and characterization, and most importantly references to past batman comics (they did a whole dark knight returns frank miller-esque sequence in one episode!!) and comic accurate, for the most part mind you, villains. hope that helped!

I also recommend the Hush series, No Man's Land, and the recent "Jason Todd" series.

I also recommend the Hush series, No Man's Land, and the recent "Jason Todd" series. You gouys are all forgetting the greatest Batman graphic novel of all time, which is "The Long Halloween". As in crucial comics to understand Infinite Crisis, i would just read the Under the hood graphic novels. and the Omac project comics. Batman's main involvment is with his satellitte "Brother Eye" i believe it was called. So read the Omac Project 1-6. Fr crisis on infinite Earths, Batman has a very small part in it. MOstly focuses on Superman, Supergirl.

Gahhhhhhhh, Tim Sale is my favortie artist. Long Halloween is the best drawn comic I have ever seen.

I'm just not a fan of his art. Looks too abstract to me. His Batman looks like an ape, and I find it too jagged. His art actually detracts from the story for me. A very good story still, I just wish the art was better, IMO.

I forgot, is TLH the one with the Calendar killer? I can never remember.
And yeah Tim Sale's art is pretty lame; I like his idea of Gordon though but the rest doesn't work for Batman at all.
