If you are a marvel fan, get the civil war series. Also, go back and pick up the Spider-man Arc called "The Other". You'll either love it or hate it. Personally I love it.

Iron Man...go AWOL! For DC, I have just been getting into stuff but from all I've heard, Infinite Crisis is a classic series. You should read Crisis on Infinite Earths if you haven't already, though (to get a backstory).

Essentially, it's Infinite Crisis for one's DC Comics fix, and Civil War for a Marvel Comics fix. But I recommend Astonishing X-Men...

Just about anything from Marvel's Ultimate line is a descent read, especially Ultimate X-Men. . . .
Definately pick up Civil War! Extremely good stuff. . . .
I personally read:
Ultimate X-Men Ultimates 2 Moon Knight Civil War Civil War Frontline Wolverine Wolverine Origins Superman

I'm going to quote myself from an earlier post: I would check out your local library first of all. A lot of times they will carry trades. That way you can read a variety of things and see what you like. My local library even has a subscription to Amazing Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men. Speaking of Ultimate X-Men, Marvel's line of Ultimate books would probably be the best place to jump in, and then transition to the "normal" Marvel books. The Ultimate Universe is a different universe where familiar Marvel characters like the X-Men and Spider-Man were revamped and started over from scratch to make the old characters more accessible to new readers. The guys who write the Ultimate books each write regular Marvel books, so your first regular Marvel book could be one by a writer you know that you like. I would buy Ultimate X-Men. It's written by Robert Kirkman. He also writes Marvel Team-Up, a great book set in the regular Marvel Universe that uses any character it wants to, from Spider-Man to Wolverine to Captain America to Speedball. If you get a recent trade (I'd highly recommend #11, The Most Dangerous Game), it'll be written by Brian K. Vaughun. BKV writes a great series set in the regular Marvel Universe called Runaways. The characters have only been around for a few years, so there's not much backstory you need to catch up on. It's about a team of orphan teenagers whose parents were supervillains. Ultimate Fantastic Four would be the next title I'd try. It's written by Mark Millar, who also writes Civil War, the "huge" series going on in the regular marvel Universe right now. It features everybody, X-Men included. The Ultimates is essentially Ultimate Avengers. It's a great book, but it's almost done with a major arc, so now would be a bad place to jump in. It's also written by Millar, so if you like UFF, I'd highly recommend the trades. It'll be rebooting in like six months with a new writer and artist, which would be a great time to jump on. I don't personally like Ultimate Spider-Man, although a lot of people do. It's written by a guy named Brian Michael Bendis, who's writing New Avengers in the regular Marvel Universe, another title I don't like. As for DC, I'd jump straight into the big guns: Batman and Superman. Both Superman titles (Action Comics and Superman) are now being written by Kurt Busiek, who is probably the greatest superhero writer still putting out comics on a regular basis. Batman is going to be written by Paul Dini, co-creator of the animated DC-verse, so he knows how to write Bats. Grant Morrison will be writing Detective Comics, and while he's usually hit or miss, I'm anticipating a hit on this one.
