Lockdown 2008: From Tyme’s Mouth
Tyme’s Note: So the last time I caught myself watching a TNA PPV was when it was… Destination X? Whatever the hell PPV it was, it was the one that featured Ultimate X Team 3-D with “Hotshot” Johnny Devine Vs MCMG and Jay Lethal. Now I’ve been noticing a very common theme with my viewing habits of TNA’s PPV’s… I tend to watch them primarily for the first match (normally featuring Johnny Devine) and the Main Event (Normally featuring one of the following: Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, AJ Styles or Christian Cage). Other then that I have been completely uninterested in TNA’s product. With that being said, TNA’s Lockdown PPV features largely similar feuds to that from the last TNA PPV I watched with a couple of jumbled messes thrown in. TNA looked at their All-Steel-Cage PPV seemingly with the intent of adding every freaking person on the roster to the card. They have a 3 Hour Time Slot for their PPV’s and they attempt to jam approximately 30+ People onto their shows… Biggest mistake of the night. However I make a vague attempt at getting past that to attempt what could be vaguely reminiscent of a journalistic opinion. I present to you for your consideration, my review of TNA’s Lockdown 2008… in full color! You will have to forgive me however as the matches will likely not be compiled in any semblance of order of matches. The order will more likely than not be a “This match just jumped into my head” scenario and if I leave a match out of my review, the likely hood of me taking a piss break during it or me just completely ignoring it in general is pretty high.
X-Division X-Scape Match
Johnny Devine Vs Jay Lethal Vs Consequences Creed Vs Curry Man Vs Sonjay Dutt
Those are all the characters I can remember being in the match to be quite honest. I do however have some things I have to get off my chest before going into a review of the match and my comments here are about the competitors so I may just do it in list form.
Johnny Devine: Nothing to say about him really except for the fact that TNA needs to try harder to push this man. Devine is quite possibly the biggest heel in the X-Division right now and the heel to face ratio currently stands at Everyone Else to One.
Jay Lethal: I honestly have no problem with Jay Lethal, he is an incredibly talented individual who is making his present gimmick work for him. However if TNA continues putting Mr. Lethal over Mr. Devine then they will succeed in turning me against him.
Consequences Creed: Now this man, I do have a problem with. He receives so much hype from the online Wrestling community and approximately 99.99% of that hype can be categorized as “Unwarrented” The man has not proven anything to me in the way of in ring work. Sure he is young and spry by so is Kenny Dykstra. The sole difference being that I can sit through an entire Dykstra match. Creed looked lost in the ring and his in ring skills is so unrefined that it was borderline sloppy. Everyone is hailing this kid as the next big thing but I, Justin Tyme am predicting that Consequences Creed will be the Next Big Flop.
Curry Man: This man is the opposite of Creed. A large number of fans on here give Curry Man crapfor being a comedy gimmick. However it is the only comedy gimmick TNA has going for them that is funny and for that, rather than condemning Curry Man, he receives my utmost commendation.
Sonjay Dutt: … I am going to keep this short and sweet… Is he just hanging around for the sole purpose of filling out the X-Division? Because he hasn’t done anything of note since… 2006?
This match should be very simple to review… I watched this PPV solely for this match and solely for Johnny Devine. It turns out the only person in this match I don’t enjoy is Consequences Creed and it was a travesty that Sonjay Dutt got eliminated before Creed. The order of elimination if memory serves went
Sonjay Dutt
Consequences Creed
Curry Man
Then the match ended because Sonjay Dutt committed a very heel move… on another heel… by locking the cage door when JD attempted his escape… So Johnny Devine was screwed out of his victory because of Sonjay Dutt… I now hate you Mr. Dutt…
Overall: I believe the match was good but my opinion is biased… any match featuring Johnny Devine immediately gets 5 stars but any match featuring Johnny Devine losing gets 2 stars subtracted from it… this match gets ***
Queen Of The Cage
Angelina Love vs. Velvet Sky vs. Salinas vs. Rhaka Khan vs. Traci Brooks vs. Christy Hemme vs. Ms. Jacqueline vs. Roxxi Laveaux
Next match would be that dumb Womens Match where the goal is to enter the ring before the match starts… The problem was that they failed to explain the number of combatants that was to enter the ring… or if they did, I didn’t care enough to listen… However after Angelina Love and Roxxi Leveaux (I don’t know how the to spell her last name) entered the ring, everyone on the side of the cage was just like “ it, I’m going home” even if they were near the top of the cage… I can’t remember everyone in the match but it was the entire Knockouts division sans Gail Kim, ODB, Awesome Kong and Rajah Women… whatever her name is…
Oh, by the way… I think Roxxi won… Yeah
Overall: I hate matches like this… It’d be like an Elimination Chamber match where the goal you have to lock the other 4 competitors in the chamber before the 2 remaining combatants fought to the death in a one on one competition… that’s just stupid. This match gets *1/2
MCMG Vs LAX Vs Black Reign and RelliK Vs Super Eric and Kaz Vs The Rock and Rave Infection Vs Scott Steiner and Petey Williams Vs The Stay Puff Marshmallow Man and Superman (They were my pick aswell)
Next up, as though that last match wasn’t enough of a cluster, we have the SUPER TAG TEAM CAGE MATCH OF DOOM… Featuring every Tag Team in TNA that isn’t already in a match… I’d make a joke about the Rock and Rave Infection but… they do that for themselves. The goal for this match was to handcuff your opponent to the cage. Before the match, they played up Eric Young’s apparent lack of confidence… during the match they also played up Eric Young’s apparent lack of confidence… and the end of the match saw Super Eric and his lack of a lack of confidence. This match featured… FAR too many people in one ring and it obstructed my vision… the steel cage around the ring didn’t help much. I was celebrating when the Machine Guns got handcuffed because atleast now I knew where they were at all points in the match and every time I saw Sabin it looked like he had his hands over his eyes like he was either embarrassed to be part of the match or sad that he had lost (I guess) such a stupid match.. don’t worry Sabin, I was feeling your pain for watching it. The end of the match saw Super Eric dupe Killer… Sorry, RelliK (I can’t make a backwards K) into handcuffing himself before managing to also defeat Black Reign. Super Eric went on to break Kaz’s handcuffs and the pair celebrated in the middle of the ring. The Machine Guns again caught my eye as they were celebrating with Super Eric and Kaz in the background, with Shelley and Sabin offering congratulatory hand gestures to Super Eric. Unfortunately for the losing combatants, they will be handcuffed to the cage for the rest of the night… Hey, I’ll bet you Russo would do that if given the opportunity…
The match was so difficult to follow that once the Guns got Handcuffed, I focused on them as it gave me something to keep my eye on that wasn’t all jumbled together with the other 10 bodies in the ring… The match itself was good enough for a **3/4
BG James Vs Kip James
Oh… My God… This right here was easily a match of the year candidate. I mean, the technical prowess displayed by BG James meshed perfectly with the highflying grace of Kip James. If you ask me 12 years from now what my favorite match in Wrestling History was, I would be lying if I didn’t say BG James Vs Kip James. This match, I shouldn’t even have to explain it to you… Look at the competitors in this match and tell me with a straight face that this won’t be the best match ever… I don’t think there is much I can talk about because I am still speechless after seeing this match… ***** easily…
BG James Vs Kip James (Actual Review)
Oh… My God… this has got to be one of the most boring ing matches I’ve seen in my entire damn life. As a wrestling fan, it made me depressed that I actually took the time out of my life to watch this match and actually review it… Granted, it was better than I thought it would be on paper… however that’s not saying much… I’d rather eat a bag of dirt while watching that abysmal Street Kings movie than see this damn match. I mean, around the 3 minute mark it felt as though I had been watching a 20 minute match… it just drags on and on… yet it was only a 6 minute match!
I can’t believe I watched this damn thing… this match alone was enough to make me regret watching this damn PPV… ½ *
ODB and Gail Kim Vs Awesome Kong and Raisha Saeed
There is not much to say about this match really… It was good for what it was however I can’t stand ODB… she bothers me… A LOT. Her entire persona is irritating. Gail Kim, Kong and Saeed are all very decent in the ring and that is the reason that this match was watchable… definitely better than that Queen Of The Cage match… too bad TNA only has like 5 talented Female Wrestlers... ***
Lethal Lockdown Team Christian (Christian Cage, Matt Morgan, Sting, Kevin Nash, Rhino) Vs Team Tomko (Tomko, AJ Styles, Team 3D, James Storm)
This match was a very good match. Everyone in this match with the exception of 3 are good in my opinion. Those 3 would be Matt Morgan, Kevin Nash and Rhino. The match itself went a total of 26 minutes which is where my biggest complaint of the match comes in. Only after all 10 combatants have entered the ring can a pinfall be made. With that being said, there was only 1 large scale spot in the entire match and the actual window where a pinfall could be made only lasted approximately 6 minutes before the match ended with Rhino winning. In essence it was merely a 6 minute match. The number of people in the ring didn’t bother me at this point in time because it was a gradual entrance and the sheer talent in the ring was enough to allow me to overlook this.
I would definitely say that this was MOTN for sure. Even with the 6 minutes of actual competition, it was easily the best match on the card… ****
TNA World Heavyweight Title Match
Samoa Joe Vs Kurt Angle ©
The match’s outcome was foreseen from a mile away, you don’t need to be Nostradamus to be able to predict the outcome of this match after the hype they have been giving it. The biggest gripe with this match is that the outcome was one that should have been done this time last year at the latest…At this point; I am uninterested in the fact that Samoa Joe is champion. Without a doubt, he deserves it however TNA waited far too long that the flavor of his victory was just far too dry by now.
The match itself with Angle was nothing special which was reminiscent of Joe’s matches with Angle from earlier in his TNA run. The reason for this is not Samoa Joe but rather Kurt Angle. Kurt Angle has passed his prime. Maybe in the year 2002, this match would be a dream match but A)TNA rushed it and B)Kurt Angle just can’t cut it in a match like this. Granted the match was not bad but Samoa Joe in his prime right now deserves better than a passed-his-prime Kurt Angle… he also deserves better than a hack like Scott Steiner as well… The match itself was good but could have been 10 times better… for this reason alone, I give it a ***3/4
The Verdict: TNA Lockdown, like all the other PPV’s TNA has ran this year, has had a total of 2 matches I looked forward to going into the PPV with a total of 3 I was impressed with going out of the PPV… now I suppose you can look at that as a good thing… the fact is though, TNA aired 8 matches on the evening… TNA’s PPV products were vastly superior to that of the WWE’s in 2005 and 06 however now, TNA is content with pushing out sub-par PPV’s while the WWE’s quality is beginning to increase. TNA needs to develop compelling storylines with equally as compelling characters. The Joe/Angle feud was a step in the right direction with the compelling storylines aspect of it… however TNA has a long road ahead of them before I become a full time viewer of their product…
Tyme’s Note: So the last time I caught myself watching a TNA PPV was when it was… Destination X?
