Details on WWE's million-dollar giveaway Posted by Randy Gordon on 05/27/2008 at 02:01 PM

The WWE site has an article on Vince McMahon's $1 million giveaway. To clarify, the sum of the total giveaway over the next few weeks will be $1 million, not $1 million every single week. WWE.com plans on posting further details regarding the contest as soon as they get them.
Vince McMahon's million dollar giveaway isn't something that's never been done before in pro wrestling as it's been done two other times. As a matter of fact, on the July 28, 1997 episode of Raw currently airing on WWE 24/7, a million dollar contest is being hyped for the SummerSlam 1997 pay-per-view. In two backstage segments, Sable and Sunny are shown handling several dollar bills in front of a lengthy case of one million dollars. The contest was misleading as the "winner" only got a mere chance to win one million dollars. During the SummerSlam pay-per-view, the winner got on the phone and had to play some sort of matching game in order to win the money. The person only had a 1 in 25 chance in winning, and lost. Also, back in September 1999 when Eric Bischoff was getting really desperate and pretty much throwing anything against the wall in hopes of a ratings increase, he created an idea to run a contest on Nitro that would award a viewer a million dollar prize if they could sort through clues that would be announced weekly through Nitro. However, the contest was abruptly cut off in a cost cutting move as Bischoff was removed from his duties as President of WCW the very next week. The contest was never mentioned again on WCW programming.

Well, considering he has single handed changed pro-wrestling and sports entertainment, I would not call him a failure. And it was obvious that the sole total will be 1 million, and that he wasn't going to give 1 million away each week.

Who is capable of winning the money? Live attendees?At-home viewers? I would guess both. The contest surrounding Summerslam 1997 was an interesting idea, and I believe more than one person (three, I believe?) took part in it during the live event. All the person had to do was match the correct key on a board containing the WWF block logo to the lock connected to the large case. I've been watching SS '97 recently but haven't reached that part yet, but I remember Sunny and Sable being dressed real slutty while one of the participants on stage was a little kid. ![:-X](http://www.wrestlingfigs.com/images/lipsrsealed.gif) And, as was mentioned, no one won the contest but if you remember, back at the first In Your House, WWF gave away an actual house down in Florida to a couple. So, not all of WWE's contests have been a complete failure.

Atleast he's doing something for the fans. I bet if you won some money from the contest, you'd be a jittery as a school girl, you wouldn't think he fails then, wouldn't you?

Russo always made that point: he says he didn't book wrestling matches, he wrote for ratings. That's what tv is all about. It sucks it has to come to this, but I don't blame Vince.

Maybe Vince should hire writers who know about wrestling, rather then these people from Hollywood. This seems like a lazy idea just to boost ratings, rather then stepping back and looking at the full picture of whats wrong with the WWE and why ratings are down. It's a band aid for a gun shot wound.

Thats what desperate men do for ratings because the product is sub-par - B I N G O, instead of fixing the problems, which are niggles, but niggles that have existed for years now which are yet to be solved consistently. A really stupid idea. It's not been thought through, the line - "Something that's never been done in the history of television" really outlines that fact. I see shows giving money away everyday, nothing new. Plus you are not going to appeal to wrestling fans by giving them money, a much better idea would have been "Golden Tickets" or something where the winners got a pass to any and every wwe event for a year or something, that would be something to shout about on a wrestling show. Vince seems to have forgotten the fact that it is a wrestling show with wrestling fans he's running, not "Who wants to be a millionaire?" It was stupid to hype it up, it's going to be painful seeing what they do in the coming weeks, pushing this waste of space. He also mentioned it's going to effect worldwide wrestling fans. Vince McMahon = Plonker of the week. Draft, unless it is the 02 or 04 format, it's not going to impress me and it won't change a thing, SD will get short-handed again, and Raw will still have the same characters hanging around the title as they have for 3-4 years and they whole thing will be ghastly to watch, especially if it's last year's format - utter ****e.

They should offer the million dollars as an employee bonus for the next wrestler or idea that really catches fire and takes off.

If you knew your pro wresling history, you would see Vince took what was called Pro wrestling in territories and brought itt o a large, international scale that has nowed shaped into sports entertainment
