TNA Victory Road Review 7/13/08
World X Cup 12 Man Elimination Tag Match
Team Mexico VS Team TNA VS Team Japan VS Team International
Winner: Team TNA via Pinfall by Alex Shelley
This match was one of THE BEST PPV matches TNA has put on in the past year. It was exactly what it should have been—fast paced and action packed. It had some high spots, but for the most part the match was held together by solid wrestling and fantastic ring psychology. This match alone is going to be worth buying the DVD for. I hope that after Victory Road, they can keep this momentum going for the X Division and start giving them more time on Impact.
World X Cup Standings
Team TNA 6 points
Team Japan 4 points
Team International 3 points
Team Mexico 3 points
Knockouts Grudge Match
Gail Kim VS Angelina Love
Winner: Gail Kim
Not that this was a bad match, I just wasn’t interested in it. They don’t have me interested in the story. I like Gail Kim, but you’ve seen one of her matches, you’ve seen them all. After the X Division match, this just slowed the pace of the PPV down in my opinion.
Sonjay Dutt VS Jay Lethal
Winner: Sonjay Dutt
Good match, with some great spots, but I was very disappointed in the ending. A match between two stars of their talent deserves a clean ending. I mean it’s obvious where they are heading with it, with Val swerving on Lethal and joining Sonjay. It would just be nice to see a match like that end cleanly.
Fans’ Revenge Match for the TNA Tag Team Championship
LAX (Champions) VS Beer Money, Inc (Challengers)
Winner: LAX
I expected better from this match. I wasn’t all hyped up on the Plant’s…Excuse me, Fan’s Revenge Match, but I kept optimistic. I expected a better match out of two teams of their talent. I would prefer to see these guys in a straight match with no gimmicks, but I am happy LAX retained. Considering all the victories that the MCMG had in the World X Cup, I’d like to see them thrown into the Tag Title Picture.
Knockout’s Championship Rematch
Awesome Kong (Challenger) VS Taylor Wilde (Champion)
Winner: Taylor Wilde
Being that I am a huge Shantelle Taylor fan, I loved the outcome of this match. I am really happy that they did not just pass Taylor off as a fluke champion. To the casual TNA fan who is not familiar with Shantelle’s previous work, this match established her as a legitimate Knockout and Champion.
World X Cup Finals
Ultimate X Match
Kaz (Team TNA) VS Daivari (Team International) VS Naruki Doi (Team Japan) VS Volador Jr (Team Mexico)
Winner of the match gets 4 points, so with the standings whoever wins Ultimate X wins the World X Cup.
Winner: Volador Jr & Team Mexico
This was a great match, however I was a bit disappointed with the end. There were some great spots in the match. Kaz’s Giant legdrop off the top of the scaffolding was amazing, but why does Volador Jr., someone who did almost nothing in the match, just come right up and win like that. I enjoyed the match, but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as Ultimate X’s of the past have been.
6 Man Full Metal Mayhem
Team 3D & Kurt Angle VS Christian Cage, Rhino, & AJ Styles
AMAZING MATCH!! AMAZING SPOTFEST!! I was pissed that Trigg got involved, since he has no place in TNA, but this was a very enjoyable match. The ending was kind of predictable since AJ won at Slammiverary, but it was still very enjoyable. I couldn’t ask for anything more from this match, and I’m interested to see where the AJ/Angle feud will go from here.
TNA World Heavyweight Championship Match
Booker T (Challenger) VS Samoa Joe (Champion)
Winner: Booker T…sort of ?
These two had a great, very physical match. I must say the ending of the match was a bit weird and confusing, but it definitely has my interest and I can’t wait for this week’s Impact to see what’s going on. To give it a quick rundown, Joe went crazy in what looked to be a heel turn. Sting came out to talk some sense into him, but Joe went back to attacking a defenseless Booker T. Joe gave Sting the finger, which prompted an attack from The Icon. Booker covered Joe and Sharmelle counted three. Booker T left with the belt, but who is the champion?
Wrap-up
This was one of TNA’s best shows this year, hands down. The ending of the Joe/Booker match, while a bit screwy, definitely piques interest for this week’s Impact. If enough people saw the PPV, I think they will notice bigger numbers in the ratings this week. The ending to the World X Cup was amazing, however I am not too pleased with Mexico stealing it out from under the noses of Teams TNA & Japan.
I give this PPV an 8.5/10 and am more than likely buying the DVD when it becomes available.
This was a review written by my buddy Dave who writes TNA reviews/columns over on PWheadlines.com, so I thought I'd share with you. He is a little pro TNA, but I think it's a decent review.
