Milwaukee Brewers Spring Training Notes The Brewers announced today that they agreed to a 1-year $2.96 million dollar contract with catcher Johnny Estrada with a $3.06 million dollar mutual option for 2009. Estrada will form a platoon with catcher Jason Kendall in a rightie-stacked lineup and will most likely start a majority of the games against right handed pitchers. They also announced they agreed to a 1-year, $2.06 million dollar contract with RHP Octavio Dotel to set-up closer Eric Gagne. The Deal also includes a $2.26 million dollar club option for 2009. To make room for these two players on the roster, the Brewers designated C Eric Munson and RHP Guillemo Mota for assignment.

Nice start man. I like how you are not trading everyone away at first. Too much trading adds bore to a game. The team needs some authenticity. And then again championship. Can't wait to see how you finish the season man.

Brewers announce rotation, bullpen Once spring training concluded, the Brewers coaching staff sat down and decided who had made the rotation, and who would be banished to the bullpen. Giving five guys a chance to battle for three spots, the Brewers saw thier team go 19-11 in the preseason. The Brewers announced that Ben Sheets will start the season opener and Yovani Gallardo will start the second game of the season. That comes as no suprise though as those two were the only locks for the rotation. The rest of the rotation will be filled out by Manny Parra (2-3 4.40 ERA in spring), Carlos Villanueva (1-2 4.74 ERA in spring) and Claudio Vargas (2-0 1.28 ERA in spring). Jeff Suppan, who was thought to have an inside track at a rotation spot, and Dave Bush will be moved into the bullpen. Suppan has requested a trade, though the Brewers may prefer to hold onto him for added depth and his track record. The Bullpen will look as follows: pitching in long relief will be RHP Dave Bush and RHP Jeff Suppan, with RHP's David Riske, Salomon Torres and Derrick Turnbow in middle relief, and RHp Octavio Dotel setting up closer Eric Gagne.

Game One: @ Chicago Cubs Loss: 5-1 WP: Carlos Zambrano (1-0) LP: Jeff Suppan (0-1)
Game Summary: Not the way the Brewers had hoped the season would start. ACE Ben Sheets left after just 3 innings, giving up 1 run and striking out 5, with an apparent hand injury. He is listed as day-to-day. Logn reliever Jeff Suppan gave up 2 runs in 2 innings of relief taking the loss. On the other side, Cubs ACE Carlos Zambrano pitched a complete game gem. After allowing a first inning homerun to Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun, he only allowed 3 more hits the rest of way, walking 5 and punching out 7 to go the distance. Derrek Lee hit a solo homer off of Sheets while Mark DeRosa drove in two runs of his own. The Brewers will hope for better luck tomorrow as they send right handed Yovani Gallardo out to the mound against tough left hander Ted Lilly. Game Two: @ Chicago Cubs Win: 4-3 WP: Yovani Gallardo (1-0) LP: Ted Lilly (0-1) Game Summary: After a rough start to the season, the Brewers bounced back nicely against the rival Cubs. The Brew Crews young ACE Yovani Gallardo went 7 strong innings, striking out 5 and only walking 1 batter en route to his first victory of the season. Set-up man gave up one run in the eight but still earned the hold and closer Eric Gagne set down the Cubs 1-2-3 in the ninth. Corey Hart and Bill Hall went back-to-back in the 4th inning off starter Ted Lilly, both players first homer of the campaign. Lilly lasted only 5 innings, giving up 4 earned on 8 hits, though he did strike out 6. The Cubs bullpen did their best to keep them in the game, throwing 4 scoreless innings with a Howry, Marmol, Weurtz combination. Aramis got the Cubs on the board in the 6th inning, hitting a 2-run homerun, the only runs Gallardo would give up. Derrek Lee had 2 more hits, including a triple. Game Three: @ Chicago Cubs Win: 4-2 WP: Manny Parra (1-0) LP: Rich Hill (0-1) SV: Gagne (2) Game Summary: The Brewers got off to a big start, getting to Cubs left hander early and often in the first inning. One the first pitch of the game, leadoff man Rickie Weeks crushed a fastball into the left field bleachers to take a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, left fielder Ryan Braun crushed another fastball from Hill 425 feet into left-center. After Fielder grounded out, Corey Hart took a 2-1 Hill fastball off the left field foul poul for the third homer of the inning. Rich Hill would settle down, allowing just one more run over the next four innings before leaving it to the Cubs bullpen yet again. The Brew Crew got a very solid start from crafty young lefty Manny Parra who went 6.2 innings, giving up ten hits and issuing no base on balls. Derrick Turnbow and David Riske recorded holds before Gagne shut down the Cubs in the ninth for the second straight day. Derrick Lee went 3-4 and starts the season with a .500 average after 3 games. He and Felix Pie drove in the only runs the Cubs would put on the board in the loss. The Cubs bullpen continued to be exceptional, throwing 4 more scoreless innings in relief of a rocky start by Rich Hill. The Brewers will go home for their home season opener. Carlos Villanueva will get the nod against San Fransisco who will send Tim Lincecum to the mound. Game Four: vs. San Francisco Loss: 8-0 WP: Tim Lincecum (1-0) LP: Carlos Villanueva (0-1) Game Summary: The Brewers home opener was spoiled big time by small, power pitching Tim Lincecum. After J.J. Hardy singled in the first, Braun got robbed of extra bases by Gold Glove center fielder Aaron Rowand and Fielder hit a weak grounder to first. Little did the Crew know that they would only be able to manage on more hit off starter Lincecum and company, a Corey Hart single. Villanueva only lasted four innings, getting pounded for 7 hits and 5 runs before handing the ball to Jeff Suppan who threw 2 scoreless after his rough opening day outing. Derrick Turnbow would go on to allow 3 more runs in 2 innings of work before David Riske turned in a scoreless frame. Giants starter Tim Lincecum went 8 scoreless, allowing 2 hits and three walks before Vinnie Chulk closed out the shutout. Third basemen Rich Aurilia reached base 5 times include a 2 run homerun that would prove to be all the Giants needed. Benjie Molina and Dave Roberts also drove in 2 runs apiece. Game Five: vs. San Francisco Win: 5-1 WP: Claudio Vargas (1-0) LP: Kevin Correia (0-1) Game Summary: The Brewers grabbed an early lead, getting a run in the first on an RBI groundout by Ryan Braun after Rickie Weeks singled, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. The Giants got the run back on a RBI groundout of their own, this time by veteran Omar Vizquel in the 3rd inning. The Brewers answered with 3 in the bottom of the 4th inning on a Bill Hall 2-run homer and a Claudio Vargas RBI single to take a 4-1 lead. The Brewers added one more in the 7th on a J.J. Game Six: vs. San Francisco Win: 8-1 WP: Ben Sheets (1-0) LP: Barry Zito (0-2)
News Headline: Sheets goes distance, Brewers hit four longballs in win Game Summary: The Brewers continued their recent trend of getting ahead early, scoring two in the first inning on a Prince Fielder 2-run homer, his first of the year. But Fielder wasn't done yet. In the 6th, Ryan Braun doubled to set up another RBI's chance for Fielder. Fielder took a Brad Hennessey fastball deep for his second homerun of the game. In the bottom of the eight, Ryan Braun hit his third homerun of the year into the home bullpen, finishing just a triple short of the cycle. Fielder came up next and ended a already 3-3 day by hitting his 3rd homerun of the game and season to extend the lead to 8-1. Right fielder Corey Hart came up next and thought he had made it back-to-back-to-back homers, only to be robbed by Dave Roberts. Starter Ben Sheets, who had left his last start with a hand injury, showed no sign of any pain, carrying a shutout threw 8 2/3 innings only to give up an RBI single to Benjie Molina. He still went the distance, striking out 6 and walking none. $127 million dollar man Barry Zito didnt fare so well, lasting only 4 innings, surrendering 6 hits and 4 runs, taking his second loss of the year in as many starts. Rich Aurilia and Omar Vizquel each had two hits of their own in the blowout loss. The Brewers have an off day tomorrow before the Reds come to town for 3 games. Catcher Johnny Estrada also went deep, his first of the year. Starter Yovani Gallardo went 6.1 strong innings, giving up 3 runs, 2 earned and striking out 8 batters on his way to his second win of the year. David Riske finish the game with 2 and 2/3 innings to earn his first save of the year. Matt Belisle left early, going 4.1 innings and allowing 7 runs on 8 hits to take his second loss of the year. Game Eight: vs. Cincinnati Win: 5-1 WP: Manny Parra (2-0) LP: Edinson Volquez (0-1)
News headline: Parra dominates as Brewers win fourth straight Game Summary: Suprise, suprise. The Brewers put up yet another run in the first inning, this time on a Ryan Braun sacrifice fly that would plate Rickie Weeks who had moved to third on a J.J. Hardy single. In the top of the third inning, the Reds tied it up on a Jeff Keppinger homerun, his first of the year. The Brewers came right back, taking a 2-1 lead on a Prince Fielder double that plated J.J. Hardy, who went 4-4 with two runs scored, though Ryan Braun was tagged out trying to score from first. Braun would get his though, tagging Volquez for a two-run homerun, his fourth this year, in the fifth inning. Starter Manny Parra turned in his second straight quality start, going 6 innings and giving up just one run on three hits, the only three hits the Reds could manage. He also did not walk a batter and has not this season threw 12.2 innings. Salamon Torres appeared for the first time this year, throwing 2 perfect innings to earn a hold and Eric Gagne threw a perfect ninth in a game that was no longer a save situation. The Brew Crew continued a trend of knocking opposing starters out early, tagging starter Edinson VOlquez for 9 hits and 4 runs in 5 innings. In fact, in Brewers victories, opposing starters are averaging just over 4.2 IP per outing as opposed to over 8 in loses. Keppingers homerun was the only offense the Reds could grind out as they were held to 3 hits. The Reds send Homer Bailey to the moudn tomorrow in attempt to avoid the sweep against Carlos Villanueva and the Brewers. News Headline: Brewers rally, complete sweep Game Summary: In what was one of the more exciting games so far this season, the Brewers came back to complete a three game sweep of Cincinnati despite a short outing from starter Carlos Villanueva. The Reds took a three run lead in the 3rd inning, highlighted by a 2-run double by Edwin Encarnacion. The Brewers came back in the bottom of the inning with a run on a Prince Fielder RBI double, but J.J. Hardy was thrown out trying to go from first to third to end the inning. Villanueva would leave after just 5 innings, giving up 3 earned on five hits. Reds starter Homer Bailey was cruising until he ran into trouble in the sixth. After Tony Gwynn popped out as a pinch hitting, Craig Counsell filling in for Rickie Weeks, singled into center for one of his 3 hits. Next up, J.J. Hardy took a 2-1 fastball from Bailey just over the fence in left field and just a few inches over the glove of the leapign Adam Dunn. Bailey would leave after 6, allowing the three runs in a no decision. Jeff Suppan came in to relieve Villanueva and threw 2 scoreless innings. In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Jason Kendall singled into centerfield to lead off the innings. The next batter Craig Counsell tried to bunt him over, but a defensive malfunction lead to an infield hit. J.J. Hardy tried to do the same thing, bunt his popped up bunt fell just in front of the catcher, and the bases were loaded. Last years rooke of the year Ryan Braun took the first fastball he saw into center for a 2 RBI single to give the Brewers the lead. He then stole second, leaving them no other choice than to intentionally walk Prince Fielder to load the bases. Two RBI groundout's later, the Brewers had a commanding 7-3 lead. Derrick Turnbow came in, allowing a 2-out homer to Ken Griffey Jr. to make it a save situation again, but also struck out all three batters he retired. In the next inning, the Brewers did their best to blow it wide open. J.J. Hardy who was 4-5, and is now 8 for his last 9, hit a two RBI single to make it 9-4. Turnbow came out for a second inning, but could not retire a batter, giving up 2 runs and leaving a man in scoring position for Eric Gagne in a three run game. Gagne worked out of it, without allowing the run to score, to earn his third save of the year.
