Upset Brewing In Cleveland
Friday, August 08, 2008
ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness saw his title reign start with controversy and issues as he battled through injuries. Now 10 months later he can only be described as the dominant champion. That can all change in only three seconds.
McGuinness has defeated an all star array of challengers including Bryan Danielson, Austin Aries, Claudio Castagnoli, Go Shiozaki, Tyler Black, Chris Hero, Roderick Strong and Kevin Steen. Some feel there aren't any strong challengers left for Nigel. In fact, McGuinness has even gone so far as to grant title shots. He has given one to El Generico and it will take place on August 15th in Cleveland.
"I'm going to lariat Generico out of his boots just like I did to his partner Kevin Steen," McGuinness said. "I thought it was only fair. I mean I beat Steen not just once, not twice, but three times. The least I could do is give his tag team partner just one shot at losing to me."
McGuinness' confidence could comeback and haunt him in Cleveland. He is conveniently overlooking the fact that he had to use the ropes for leverage and grabbed the trunks to win two of his matches over Steen. Generico is an explosive competitor capable of spectacular moves and solid wrestling. He has proven his toughness in his feud against The Briscoes. He showcased his athleticism in a dazzling bout at "Return Engagement" vs. Kota Ibushi. Generico has proven to be one of most exciting competitors on the ROH roster. Now all he needs is that one victory to put him over the top. Nothing would propel Generico into superstardom and shake up ROH like an upset on August 15th in Cleveland.
Yes, it would be an upset, but that doesn't mean that a Generico win is unlikely. It only takes three seconds for a new World Champion to be crowned. Generico has sported a unique arsenal that can keep any opponent off balance. He also brings Steen's experience into Cleveland.
"It is like Generico has already been in the ring with Nigel three times," Steen said. "I have been watching tapes of my matches against Nigel with him. I have been pointing out some things I have learned about Nigel. Generico will be prepared for this one and don't forget he is also looking for some revenge."
McGuinness has given Generico just enough fuel to put the luchador over the top. It was in Edison, NJ at "Injustice" that McGuinness used Generico to send a message to Steen. Nigel attacked Generico and put the London Dungeon on him. Generico has not forgetton this incident.
"I'll twist him and break him in half in Cleveland," McGuinness said. "Everyone enters matches with me with high hopes and lofty dreams and every time I hit them with the Jawbreaker Lariat or make them tap out to the London Dungeon. It is just a matter of what I feel like beating Generico with then I'll get the hell out of Cleveland as fast as I can."
Ring Of Honor has waited a long time to return to Cleveland. El Generico has waited even longer for his shot at the World Title. Now the wait might only be three seconds longer for a new ROH World Champion.
Anyone else possibly see a Steen heel turn in the works? I just have a feeling Steen will cost Generico the match, resulting in a feud between the two. On the other hand, while practically impossible, I'd mark the out if Generico somehow walked out champ.
