idk why everybody thinks it started after Wrestlemania 14..... actually what happend after Wrestlemania 14 was when the WWF started using that scratch logo they instead of the classic WWF logo so maybe thats why everybody considers that the start or the fact that austin won the title that night.... but i believe the start of the attitude era was the montreal screwjob because the WWF was already changeing its image with DX and Austin and then when that all went down at Survivor Series... that planted the seeds for McMahons character.
The attitude era ended after Wrestlemania 17 whenever the invasion angle started cause thats when all the newer superstars started debuting and people like the rock, austin, and mick foley were fading away from the WWE

I like to think that the Austin 3:16 speech was the beginning of the Attitude Era, though it wasn't until mid-to-late '97 when it finally kicked into high gear (with the formation of DX, the Montreal screwjob, etc.)
And I also like to think that Wrestlemania X7 is the grand finale of the Attitude Era.

It started around 96, but only came into full force around 98. I think it phased out more around 2000 though and was gone by 2001.

The Attitude Era DID NOT start at WM14. The Attitude Era began the moment Stone Cold Steve Austin won the 1997 King Of The Ring. The accidental birth of the cultural phenomenon "Austin 3:16" is what pushed the WWF into the new edgier grounds that officially began the Attitude Era. Not long after that, we saw the birth of D-Generation X and so on and so on. But Austin won the 96 KOTR...Triple H was the 97 KOTR. I thought that looked wrong. Thank you for pointing that out. Ultimately my point is that the Attitude era began after Austin won at KOTR.

Before I say anything, you have to know when the seed(s) were planted. The first seed was planted when Steve Austin became the 1996 King of the Ring Winner. The second seed was planted with Pillman's Got a Gun (aired Nov. 4th 96). The third seed was Bret Hart's "This is Bull**** Promo. The fourth seed was Austin giving McMahon the Stunner (aired Sept. 22 97). The fifth and final seed was of course The Montreal Screwjob (this is where the Mr. McMahon character was born).
With Bret Hart out of the WWF, McMahon looked towards Austin to carry the company. As for the WWF Logo, if my memory serves the WWF debuted it at the '97 Survivor Series. They didn't officially adopt it till the Dec. 15 97 RAW. Austin was chosen because of his ability to get the crowd on the palm of his hands. Then comes the '98 Royal Rumble. Austin wins the Rumble and later defeats Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XIV for the WWF Championship. Thus making WrestleMania XIV the official start of the Attutude Era.
As for the ending, WrestleMania X-Seven marked the end of the Attitude era and the late 90's wrestling boom. With WCW just having being purchased by Vince McMahon, the WWF didn't have to do risque storylines as well as 'must-see tv'. McMahon's mentallity was simple. No competition equals no need to continue the attitude. The second Austin shook McMahon's hand at WrestleMania X-Seven, the main storyline came to a(n) (un)official close.

When WWF lost its Hart. Really though there are so many moments that sort of led up to what we call the attitude days. Austin's KOTR speech, formation of DX, new Hart Foundation, Austin/Michaels, etc. 1998 is when the scratch lettering that still exists, albeit modified, took over as the company logo. They started changing how they marketed the product and such as well. But the seeds were planted way before then.

Beginning of the Attitude era could really be two dates: June 23, 1996 or March 29, 1998. I am going to lean towards March 29, 1998. It was immediately after Austin won the championship at Wrestlemania that D-X became the comedic group everyone loved. The Austin-McMahon rivalry started to reach new heights. The Rock started becoming a household name taking over the Nation.
End could really be two dates as well: March 26, 2001 when WCW was brought out or June 24, 2002 the night after King of the Ring 2002, the official birth of my favorite era in WWE-The Ruthless Aggression Era. I am going to say either dates can really be considered the end of the Attitude era but I am going with June 24, 2002.

1997-1999 was the Attitude era (changing the show to RAW Is WAR, DX, Nation, Austin, Undertaker vs. Kane, Corporation, Ministry).
The Attitude era ended in Undertaker vs. Austin at Fully Loaded 1999. First Blood "End of an Era" Match. Vince was fired because Undertaker lost, then later returned as a babyface to wrestle against Triple H at Armageddon 1999, which started the "McMahon-Helsley Era".

I believe it roughly started March 2nd of 1998 at 8:30pm time and it ended April 9th of 2001 at 9:10PM. Just rough guesses....

Like said before, there's no real start or ending to the attitude era, but it definitely began before 1998.. there were a lot of edgy things going on in late 97 that I think makes 97 a part of the Attitude era.
I'd say it ended the night WCW was purchased by Shane McMahon (kayfabe wise). The reason I say that is I really think the WWE took a whole new direction once the Invasion angle was in full swing.. I hated the Invasion angle, and personally, I feel the product hasn't been the same since that angle began.. which is why I consider the Attitude era separate from anything that happened after WrestleMania X-Seven..

The Attitude Era was a chain reaction cause by several events (DX, Austin 3:16,MSJ) and what finally caused the Attitude Era was the moment Austin won the title from HBK at Wrestlemania 14. After Austin become like the all hell was unleashed. You had a Cult group, a Pimp and his Hoes, a Pornstar, a group of Degenerates invading the other company. But then the Attitude slowly started to die out sure it was still there but it was as great as when there was someone to compete against. But The Attitude Era was not fully dead it was still clingy to life until one event where you knew the Attitude was finally gone in my opinion. The event was the granddaddy of them all WrestleMania. And this WrestleMania was simply know for WWE being All Grown Up. Yes in my mind WrestleMania 23 was that final nail the Attitude Era coffin. Everyone was older and more serious Those men who raised hell as a bunch of degenerate became to sure fire future all of famers, the satanist become a badass then went went back to his roots and became a phenom once more. So in my own opinion the Attitude era began after Wrestlemania 14, started to die when WWE bought ECW and WCW and finally kicked the bucket at Wrestlemania 23.

Id have said it completely ended by the time HHH and Stephanie got married and were in control of RAW. But it probably ended a little bit before then in reality...
