With a retrospect/review of one of my favorite games in the early 2000's, and the reason I bought a Gamecube, Sonic Adventure 2.
Weather you play it on the dead and buried (and on life support when the game was new) Dreamcast, or on the slightly more recent, slightly updated "Battle" version on Gamecube, Sonic adventure 2 is an adventure not to be missed.
The graphics aren't amazing, but nice enough. There are two new characters, Rouge and Shadow, that you will actually care about (unlike *shudder,* cream and silver)
A great replayability value is the Chao system where you raise little tear drop shaped things. Its so great it will make you want to go have children (lol yeah right).
Another enticing thing is that you get to stand behind the wheel, or, controls, of Dr. Eggman's Eggmoblie. But that starts a list of flaws... why is Robotnik permanently called Eggman? He was always Robotnik over here, but they had to change it... WHY? Although, there still are nice subtle Robotnik notices, such as his family name.
This game has another little problem.. Tails is automatically assumed to be some child prodigy, on par with Eggman in robotics. Now he always flew his little plane, but this stupid little twist was just to fit Tails levels in... an exact carbon copy of Eggman's robot shooting levels. He should be flying around admiring and trying to rival his best friend Sonic. Although I will admit, Tails and his stages have some quite uplifting beats.
Tails' theme song
"Mission Street"
Now Sonic might have the connotation of a kiddy game these days, and although some lines and voice acting are a bit corny, they are good enough and dark enough. Another common assumption is that 3D Sonic games suck. This is honestly the best of the last. Everything Sonic Heroes tried to reestablish really went to crap.
Graphics- 6/10 -Colorful and flashy, but a little shoddy, even when taken account it was last gen (yes, Dreamcast was technically in the realm of PS2/Cube/Xbox.
Storyline- 9/10 -A lot more advanced than you think, and with plenty and enough plot twists.
Game Mechanics- 7/10 -In the hedgehog levels, there is a lot of high speeds, but the camera angles can riddle you and drop you into abysses (plural of abyss?)
Replayability- 10/10 -The aforementioned Chao, and being able to challenge yourself by redoing missions and gaining emblems.
Sound (Voices)- 5/10 -Ehh, what can you expect. Its ok, but you may or may not be cringing.
Music - 10/10 -From menu screens to in-game level music, you will be humming some of these tunes.
Overall- 8/10 (overall impression)
All in all, Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is a great game on the realm of classic and modern from the last generation of video games. If you liked Sonic back in the days of SEGA Genesis and you want to try some of the new ones, just stop at this one.
Any good retrospects/comments back into the wild world when Sonic still had dignity and this game was fresh?
