I always see the ad free link at the bottom and was wondering if anyone actually pays to make it ad free for them? Or does it work that one person pays and it's ad free for everyone?

I'm pretty sure the head admin can pay and make it ad-free.

nevermind, you can pay to charge you ever certain number of pages you view.
