The camera fades in. Weights, machines, punching bags, and an assortment of other workout equipment surround a large ring in the center of the facility. It can only be assumed that this facility is in the Far East, as the three white males and one white female in the center of the room stand out amongst the average gym user. The facility looks like a replica of Mick’s old gym from the Rocky movies. The walls are littered with old wrestling promotional fliers. Posters of past wrestlers and even recent mixed martial arts experts are framed along the hallways, each complete with a signature and message to the owner of the facility about how grateful they were to be given the opportunity to train there.
The gym is full of people working out and training at various machines and stations. The main focal point of the entire building is the center ring. Part of the ring’s draw is the lighting is set-up to create a stadium-like look, where everything directly surrounding the ring is dimly lit, while the ring itself is bright, almost like a beacon of athletic accomplishment. Around the ring is a very simple metal bleacher for viewing of whatever match or sparring session is taking place. Today, Danny Vice is working out in the ring in preparation for his gauntlet match for the undercard of Crimson Existence, known as Violent Uprising. Danny spars with an unknown opponent, working at far less than a 100% rate, more or less exchanging offensive maneuvers and occasionally looking for a reversal.
Danny’s younger brother Jimmy stands against the apron, coaching Danny for a physically and emotionally grueling gauntlet match, one that takes place just several days away. His sister Janie sits upon the metal bleachers, flipping through a recent issue of People magazine, seemingly unimpressed with her brother’s efforts in the ring.
The sparring partner and Danny lock-up in the center of the ring. The unknown man whips around Danny and quickly applies a full-nelson. He hits a quick fallaway slam and holds the full nelson position firmly on Danny, pressing him against the mat.
Jimmy Vice: So is this how The Vagrant is going to train for his big match, getting beaten by a chump in a no-name gym in the middle of Korea!
Danny seems to scoff at Jimmy’s insinuations that he isn’t working hard. The sweat beads barely form upon his brow.
Jimmy Vice: Bryan Stinberg. Mia Porter. Two newcomers to the WFWF. You’ve seen Stinberg in the past, and we both know that he’s a better wrestler than that two-bit chump you’re allowing to overpower you in this ring right now.
Danny breaks the hold and both men get to their feet. Danny runs at his foe and is met with a hiptoss. Another attempted clothesline by Danny leads to another hiptoss. Frustrated, Danny rises to his feet and answers his brother. Each breath he takes is not nearly as deep as they should be; proof of his lackluster effort thus far.
Danny Vice: Porter is a rookie, a no one. Her tapes show she has talent, but experience and heart will allow The Vagrant to defeat her. Stinberg has a fatal flaw. His arrogance. The Vagrant will use his own cockiness against him. Stinberg cannot beat The Vagrant, there’s nothing he can do about that.
Jimmy Vice: And Devin Star? The man who main evented your debut show? He fought through an injury and pain. He went down to the wire in a 2 out of 3 bout. You think he’s going to just let The Vagrant win? You think he’s going to lie down for you?
Danny is whipped into the ropes, but sees the telegraphed backbody drop and hits a facebuster to the knee, followed by a standing dropkick, knocking his opponent to the mat. The constant badgering and reminders of his upcoming opponents from his brother is beginning to energize Danny. His eyes look more focused, his movements more crisp, and his breaths are deeper and shallow as he speaks.
Danny Vice: He is….a great talent…and will be…a daunting….but beatable…enemy this week. The Vagrant…fears….no one.
Danny’s lack of focus leads him to the receiving end of a right hand, but he quickly regains focus and follows with three stiff rights. He whips the man against the ropes, darts the other direction, and connects with a springboard cross body block.
Jimmy Vice: So what about that Shawn Williams guy? He was up on the main show last week. What, is that supposed to be intimidating? The kid lost. He’s a loser. He beats up fans! Fans! The people you claim to be all about. The people who you say you came here to please. You say you’re about purifying the WFWF. Making it for the people, the very people you rose from, the people who had to suffer just like you. You say you want to show them the good things they can do with their own lives. That they too can succeed. But you’re going to get beat by a loser like Shawn Williams. The very bully and punk that tried to hold you back!?!? No, The Vagrant is a winner. The Vagrant does not stand for bullies and punks. NOW SHOW ME!
Danny’s eyes change. His demeanor pulls a complete 180 degree turn. Suddenly, he looks like a completely different person. He kicks his opponent in the guy, sets him up for a double underhook back-to-back piledriver, and drills the maneuver he calls Rejection. Danny snaps up, and locks in the Vicelock on the seemingly lifeless body that once seemed like a formidable sparring adversary.
Danny Vice: You all see this! You better remember this! The Vagrant is going to make you all TAP! TAP! TAP!
Janie looks up from her magazine when she hears the impact of Rejection and the screaming of her older brother. The entire facility stops. The sound of dropped weights clang, echoing throughout. Jaws drop and eyes bulge at the intensity of The Vagrant in the center ring.
Janie Vice: There’s The Vagrant…about time.
She flips through her magazine again with a small smile on her face. Jimmy wears a very similar one as he crosses his arms, content with his brother’s passion and drive. The camera fades out.
