How can this world be considered right?
Why do people do things when they know it will hurt people?
How can you look at yourself in the mirror when you know what is going on in the world, and that you are not doing anything about?
Robert: They are not all bad.
Robert is an old friend of mine, and one who has helped me out a lot recently. We are sitting in a café, I am staring out of the window watching as the world passes me by. I can see people walking through the concrete jungle, cars passing by each other. People walking from A to B with out a care in the world.
Trace: Maybe not, but most of them have not respect for the world they live in. How can I take any of them seriously when they don’t take themselves seriously in the first place?
Robert: You don’t need to be so critical about everything.
Trace: Why not?
I look around at the inside of the café. People are sitting around eating and drinking. There are three people in here. A guy wearing a trench coat who appears to be out of bad gangster noir film. Another guy who appears not to have slept for the past few days, and a blond girl who has been eyeing me up for the past half hour.
Trace: told you it was a bad idea not to come here at night.
Robert: why, what could be better than the city at night.
Trace: How about prison?
Robert: Ha-de-bloody-ha.
The blonde gets up to leave and as she does gives me a piece of paper with her number on it.
Blonde Women: Call me.
Trace: If I find the time.
I say the last bit as she is leaving, and from the looks of things she doesn’t hear me.
After a few more minutes we walk out of the building into the night air. I look up at the sky and stare at the night sky. The stars shine with a passion that I have never seen in a person, their beauty surpasses anything I have ever seen.
Trace: See, that is what we should be looking at, not four walls. I just hope that maybe I will get to see them up close before I die.
Robert: Why are you thinking about your death, that’s a long way off yet.
Trace: You never know.
The world is cruel, but if you can look at yourself in the mirror and feel like you have done one good thing that day, then you can sleep at night.
