I am having problems booting my powerbook g4
I do a hard boot (pressing the button) and I wait for it to load
it then gives me a grey screen that gives me a choice to "mac-boot" or "shut-down"
and when I type "mac-boot" I get a screen that shows me a folder with a flashing question mark
I would like to know what the problem is and how I could deal with this
thank you

That means that the Mac cannot find a operating system to boot from.
There are some things that might be wrong with it, obviously there is something wrong but, thesea are a few options.
Your NVRAM needs to be reset Your harddrive has a corrupt OS Then theres your hard drive has no OS Or really your HD just doesn't function.
You've had this for a while now I'm assuming? You didn't just get it did you?
I forget what I did but, I think to reset the NVRAM, when you boot up the computer, even before you turn it on, hold down the option key, and then turn it on. Then a blue screen should come up after that. After that the computer should search for some disks to boot from. Then if that is all, your HD name should show up and then yeah. That's all that was wrong with mine, but before that I tried different things.
Another I tried before that was booting from the restore disc or a Mac OS x install disc. All you do is put the disc in, reboot and then hit the "c" key to tell it to boot from the CD/DVD drive in your comp. Once it loads up, there should be a Utilities option I think, and under that I think it's something like Disc Utility. After that you should see a "First Aid" tab or button or something, then you click that and you hit Repair disk or Repair Disk permissions I think. It's one or both. It may take a while but after it's done any that are highlighted in red you want to look out for.
Then after that it should try to repair the problems. If so I think it highlights it in green? And if not its in red. Then after that if it repairs it it will tell you it's done. Then after that you should go back to the Utilities tab and then click start up disk. Then it should search for any connected drive to boot from. I can't remember what to do after that. I think if it shows it can't boot, I think you have no choice but to reinstall the OS.
Those are the two things I remember doing anyways. Hope that helped. Any questions just ask!
