Hey,
I've been wanting to make a post regarding the voting that goes on for deciding the best actor award. More specifically, for Mickey Rourke this year.
I mean, whomever was in charge of voting, they voted for him to win best actor for The Golden Globe awards, as well as best actor for the British Academy Film Awards.
Then, whomever was in charge of voting, they vote for Sean Penn to win best actor for the S.A.G. Awards and best actor for The Oscar awards.
I was just wondering, since Mickey won best actor twice in a row before Sean Penn won it at the S.A.G.'s, what in the world did the people in charge of voting see differently from the others that voted Mickey to win twice before that??
I mean, how can they see it any differently from the two times before that Mickey won?? I just don't see how that makes any sense.
Mickey wins best actor two times in a row, then Penn wins it at the S.A.G.'s, then the Oscars.
I'm just wondering what they saw differently, is all. Maybe the people in charge look down on wrestling and that's why they chose to go with Penn instead. I'm not really sure. I'm sure there is a reason though...
I just don't see how the people in charge of voting can vote Mickey Rourke to win twice and then go the other way with Sean Penn.
Oh well, I guess I'm probably looking too deep into this, but whatever. They are tied for best actor if you ask me. Seeing as they both won twice.
I guess I'm still a bit upset that Mickey Rourke didn't win the Oscar. If he beat out Penn for the Golden Globe, then how did he not do the same for the Oscar??
That might have a bit to do with Penn not actually being there at the Golden Globes show, but I'm not sure..Who knows..
I feel Mickey Rourke got robbed of an Oscar. He won best actor two times before that and should've won a 3rd. Rourke got robbed.
Anyways, that's my little rant on the subject. Feel free to post your opinions.

Penn played a homosexual. There's your answer.

You could have a similar post: Sean Penn won the SAG award for Best Actor, so why didn't he win the BAFTA?
FWIW Mickey absolutely deserved it this year. I'd say The Wrestler is easily a top 5 movie already for me.

Different people vote.
The Screen Actors Guild is made up of actors, they vote on the SAG Awards. The Oscars are voted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, this includes the majority of people in the Screen Actors Guild.
The Golden Globes are voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press. The BAFTA'S are voted by The British Film Academy.
There you go.

Whether Penn played a homosexual or not, his performance in Milk was amazing. He deserved the Oscar. However I think Mickey deserved it too.

Rourke also didn't win twice in a row.
It goes like this:
Globes - SAG's - BAFTA - Oscars

We really need to question the process of voting because your binky didnt win? gimme a break.
Penn deserved it, Rourke was great but he wasnt Liam Neison in Schindlers List, people need to calm down, there wasnt an injustice done.

Rourke also didn't win twice in a row. It goes like this: Globes - SAG's - BAFTA - Oscars Oh, if that's how they went, then my bad. I thought it was the Globes, BAFTA, S.A.G's and then The Oscars. That's why I thought Rourke won twice in a row. I didn't actually see the S.A.G. awards and didn't realize that it came before the British Academy Film Awards. Going into the Oscars though, it was still Rourke leading 2-1.

As someone else mentioned, its a very different set of people voting.
The only common members voted for Penn both times, making it actually somewhat consistent.
I wanted Rourke to win the night of the awards, but after seeing Milk, I totally understand why Sean Penn won. It could have gone either way and I would have been fine with it. Both were incredible.

I too am sad that Mickey lost.
In response to your topic you do have to realize that the Golden Globes are voted by the Hollywood Foreign Press. The BAFTA's are voted on by the British Film Academy.
The SAG's are voted on by actors that are registered SAG members. And the majority of them are Academy members, so it made sense to see Penn win both SAG and the Oscar Best Actor since the majority of voters were the same.

Have you seen Milk? Watch Milk then find clips of Harvey Milk on YouTube. Sean Penn WAS Harvey Milk. Not taking anything away from Rourke, but the better man won. I thought The Wrestler was great, but I think most WRESTLING fans here are mad because the WRESTLING movie actor didn't win. I do however think The Wrestler should've been nominated for Best Picture.

You mean there was no change in being mentally intellectually- disabled and being a gay rights activist No there is a difference in being those to kind of people. But thier wasn't that big of a difference in the way Sean Penn played them. I love gay people and mentally challenged people.

I had a post typed up about my negative thoughts on The Wrestler (I hear a billion marks saying LOL WAT? right now) but I lost it. So I'll leave people with a quote from one of my favourite video games that pretty much sums it up: "A pro isn't someone who sacrifices themselves for a job. That's just a fool." The mindset they had Mickey Rourke portray in the movie was pathetic. I found nothing heroic about it. It didn't tell an untold story about the wrestling world. It's just a story about a guy who doesn't know when to let go, to the point where he nearly dies from it. He couldn't live a normal life. He couldn't handle not being a star. None of the people I know think like that, and thankfully so. Wrestling in particular shouldn't consume ANYONE like that.
That being said, The Wrestler was still a great movie, but very depressing. Milk was awesome. Sean Penn definitely deserved the Best Actor award -- the better man won.
