WWF Monday Night RAW
Monday 20th January 1997
Beaumont TX - Montagne Arena
[21:00-21:02] - The opening WWF signature airs, as it starts us off on this edition of WWF Monday Night RAW! Vince McMahon voices over as we go to an overview shot of the Alamodome from last night's Royal Rumble event, showing Shawn Michaels with the WWF Championship and reunited with trainer, Jose Lothario make the cover of the San Antonio Times newspaper. Stills of the gigantic struggle Shawn Michaels and Sycho Sid had are shown as Jim Ross put Shawn over as the new champion and talked about there being a new champ in town. Also, we are shown stills of the controversial four-way tie in which Vader, The Undertaker, Bret Hart and Stone Cold Steve Austin had, as Vince McMahon himself is set to determine the ruling of the Royal Rumble match finale and who is facing Shawn at WrestleMania 13! The opening video package for WWF Monday Night RAW airs as we cut straight to the ring as Vince McMahon, Jim Ross and Jerry "King" Lawler are doing commentary, as pyrotechnics go off in the rafters!
[21:02-21:05] - Vince McMahon, Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler continue to discuss the Royal Rumble match controversy as Bret "Hitman" Hart is seen walking quickly down the aisleway! The crowd pop as Hart is not wearing his in-ring attire as Bret enters the ring and takes a microphone away from ring announcer, Howard Finkel. Hart reminds Vince that when he returned, he vowed that Bret would get another shot at the WWF Championship, but instead he was given Stone Cold Steve Austin! And he beat Austin, as Vince told us all that the winner would challenge for the WWF Championship then! But Shawn Michaels was given a shot at the WWF Championship with Sycho Sid for Royal Rumble, whereas Bret had to eliminate twenty-nine men for an opportunity at the title. But he was screwed out of it by not only Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker and Vader, but also Shawn Michaels, but the World Wrestling Federation and Vince McMahon aswell! Bret questions Vince for his opportunity, then saying that he isn't going to get his shot at the WWF Championship, and quits right on the spot! The Hitman leaves the ring and drops the microphone, stepping over the barricade, Vince trying to stop him to no avail! Bret leaves through the crowd to chants of 'We Want Bret' as the announcers look stunned!
[21:05-21:09] - We return to the ring as Stone Cold Steve Austin is now in the ring, picking up a microphone and insulting Bret Hart, calling him a whiny little coward who has done nothing but whine and complain and sniff the crap from up Vince McMahon's ass since his return last winter! Austin rants about how tonight, he was supposed to face Vader, but a buffoon that calls himself Gorilla Monsoon, the WWF President said that Austin can't because of the controversial possibility of Vader and The Undertaker fighting some more and causing harm to any spectators! Austin insults Gorilla, calling him a coward for his job, who is also a brown-noser, just like Bret "Hitman" Hart! Austin tells Vince that he can tell people whatever he wants, but the fact of the matter is that he should be going to WrestleMania 13, and he will do whatever the hell he wants in which Vince doesn't want him to do to ensure that Austin DOES go to challenge Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship! The crowd give Austin a mixed reaction as Stone Cold demands Vince to answer the controversy that was the Royal Rumble match right here, right now and he isn't going anywhere until he gets the answer! Vince drops his headset and storms off to the backstage area as RAW has only started but all hell has broken loose already!
[21:09-21:13] - Commercial Break #1
[21:13-21:14] - We return to a snippet of the Royal Rumble's Alamodome from last night as Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross announce that last night had an attendance setting record of 60,525 fans in the Alamodome. From there we see Steve Austin as he watches on from the ringside area, sat comfy on a chair by the timekeeper.
[21:14-21:22] - Owen Hart and British Bulldog with Jim Cornette defeated Henry O. Godwinn and Phineous I. Godwinn to retain the WWF Tag Team Championships A pretty decent match overall to kick things off tonight in the ring with the seemingly dysfunctional duo of Owen Hart and Davey Boy Smith defending their belts against the Arkansas farmers, the Godwinns. Owen and Phineous started off with the challenger pounding away at the youngest Hart brother before British Bulldog got the tag, and he used his power to topple over Phineous, the seemingly co-operating champions working over Phineous before Henry got the tag. He ran in and pounded everybody before Owen slapped Bulldog on the back with a blind tag, leading to Owen rushing into the ring and delivering a hard spinning heel kick to Henry for the three! **3/4
[21:22-21:23] - Owen Hart celebrates his victory over the Godwinns as though he accomplished it all by himself before British Bulldog shoved Owen! Bulldog questioned Owen about the finish as Jim Cornette walked in, breaking the tension by handing Owen and Bulldog their WWF Tag Team Championships.
[21:23-21:24] - We return to Stone Cold Steve Austin as Jim Ross slowly walks over to Austin, asking Stone Cold about his thoughts on Bret Hart leaving further. Austin continues to call Bret Hart a coward as Vince McMahon returns down the aisleway to a pop, Austin telling Vince to hurry up and come over to him! Vince informs Austin that he has got a match with Vader tonight, regardless of what happens, and he will announce what should happen after that controversial Royal Rumble match last night. Austin gets up, calling Vince a jackass before leaving.
[21:24-21:25] - Further stills and clips of Shawn Michaels are shown, on his route to becoming a two-time WWF Champion, showing his entrance last night. We are then shown the conclusion to the hard-hitting clobberfest in which Ahmed Johnson and Faarooq fought, ending with Ahmed fighting off the Nation of Domination and putting their manager, Clarence Mason through a table. But then later in the evening, during the Royal Rumble match, it was Ahmed who single-handedly eliminated Savio Vega, Crush AND Faarooq in a period of a minute. Returning to the ring, we see Faarooq and the Nation of Domination, as Faarooq will be facing Marc Mero in just a few moments!
[21:25-21:29] - Commercial Break #2
[21:29-21:35] - Marc Mero defeated Faarooq with JC Ice and Wolfie D by disqualification This was a pretty good match though very short as "Marvelous" Marc Mero brought Sable down to the ring, but told her to return to the backstage area midway, due to the prescense of JC Ice and Wolfie D of PG-13 being at ringside. Clarence Mason was evidently absent from the scene tonight, obviously because of the Pearl River Plunge he sustained, going through an announce table with assistance from Ahmed Johnson. Mero fought Faarooq with quick lefts and rights and appeared to be on his way to victory before JC Ice crotched Mero on the top rope while Mero went for the Shooting Star Press, Wolfie D holding up the official. Faarooq controlled Mero before Marc fired back, but we'll never know what would happen as PG-13 hit the ring, attacking Mero! **1/4
[21:35-21:38] - Wolfie D and JC Ice began to attack Marc Mero from the front and behind, Mero heroically attempting to fight them both off only for Faarooq to join in on the beatdown of the 'Marvelous One'. That's when Ahmed Johnson rushed down the aisleway, sliding into the ring and eliminating JC Ice and Wolfie D from the ring! Ahmed forgot about Faarooq, however, walking right into a Dominator, as Crush and Savio Vega entered the ring, joining Nation of Domination in the ring! Mero tried to get back up only to get nailed with a Caribbean Kick from Savio! Big Crush tossed Ahmed over the top rope, picking Ahmed up afterwards and powerbombing him through the announce table, just like Ahmed did to Clarence Mason last night! The Nation stood in dominance.
[21:38-21:40] - We cut to a pre-taped interview as Terry Funk and Terry Gordy were shown inside of a ring in what appears to be a non-WWF ring, in fact, it seems to be in a small venue. Funk asks the cameraman what world he thinks he is in. Gordy tells the cameraman that he is in ECW country, confirming that this place is the ECW Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Funk tells the World Wrestling Federation that they have luxary, but behind that luxary is greed. Greed fed from the throthing mouths of young kids, teenagers, only expecting entertainment and joy and happiness in the WWF. But in ECW, they are bleeding cash because they have been underestimated time after time by the child-friendly promotions, but in Extreme Championship Wrestling, they'll learn what life is
really about. They bleed day in and day out, for what? Little success. Funk finishes it off, telling WWF that they will either give them an opportunity; some air-time, or ECW will force their way onto the network.
[21:40-21:44] - From here, we cut to static and to the ring as Jim Ross talks about the controversial finish to the grand Royal Rumble match last night in San Antonio's famous Alamodome, with four men being possible candidates to go to WrestleMania 13 and challenge for the WWF Championship in which Shawn Michaels now holds. Ross shows more footage from the Royal Rumble, including this controversial ending, with the action-replay footage appearing. Vince McMahon then makes a rise and climbs into the ring, saying that him and Gorilla Monsoon spent the last twenty-four hours, up to just moments ago configuring what should happen in this event and situation. Vince talks about the shocking odds that this happened, a four-way tie between Bret Hart, Vader, The Undertaker and Stone Cold Steve Austin. McMahon concludes that he has an idea in which should satisfy everybody, including the audience in which there is an In Your House pay-per-view on February 16th from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and there will be three matches, one between Bret "Hitman" Hart, if he decides to return, and he has made a phone call to Bret, and he is still in Beaumont, Texas right now, to take on Vader! The crowd pop, as Vince continues, telling us that match number two will include Stone Cold Steve Austin fighting The Undertaker! The crowd pops again as Vince finishes off by saying that the winner of Austin/Taker and Bret/Vader will meet in the main event with the winner going to WrestleMania 13 to challenge for the WWF Championship. The crowd pop as Stone Cold Steve Austin's theme plays, but we cut away!
[21:44-21:47] - Commercial Break #3
[21:47-21:48] - Stone Cold Steve Austin marches into the ring as we return from our final commercial break of the evening, Austin confronting Vince McMahon and telling Vince that he will be kicking The Undertaker's ass, and then it doesn't matter who's next, he will destroy Vader or cripple Bret Hart, and that's all there is to it! The theme of Vader then played.
[21:48-21:56] - Steve Austin fought Vader to a draw This was a hard-hitting main event as Stone Cold Steve Austin rushed out of the ring whilst Vader was making his walk down the aisleway. Conspicuous by his absense, Paul Bearer was nowhere to be found tonight, but Austin and Vader traded blows around the ringside area, the match technically beginning at 21:50. Austin tried to get Vader down for the most part, succeeding with a Lou Thesz press aswell as his stiff, hard Texan punches. Vader would meanwhile manage to knock Austin down repeatedly aswell. The crowd took sides with Austin in this, despite both men being heels as Austin would just continuously level Vader until Vader caught Austin on the top rope and knocked him off to the outside! Vader turned around as The Undertaker popped up through the canvas! **1/2
[21:56-21:58] - The Undertaker began laying into Vader with lefts and rights, delivering a hard Chokeslam to Vader to the shock of everybody! 'Taker would then turn around to get a Stunner from Stone Cold Steve Austin! Austin began to tear into his opponent for In Your House as Bret Hart suddenly came through the crowd, knocking Austin down with a steel chair, Austin backing out of the ring! Hart stood in the center of the ring as Austin walked back up the aisleway as Monday Night RAW prematurely went off the air!
